The National Football League did not have a very good year in terms of television ratings. Though, you wouldn’t know that based on what they’re asking their broadcast partners to pay. The NFL is asking their broadcast partners – NBC, Fox, CBS, ESPN (Disney) – to pay double what they have been paying for the right to broadcast NFL games. However, Disney-owned ESPN is throwing sand in the NFL’s gears.

Personally, I like the idea that a professional sports franchise owner, like Mark Cuban, will stop exploiting the Star Spangled Banner to sell his product. For decades, professional sports teams have used patriotism for profit. The owners and players wrapped themselves in the flag they now burn. Let us be honest, corporations - especially multinational corporations - do not do anything that does not benefit the corporation. This practice of playing the national anthem, parading the flag in front of the crowd, “honoring” our uniformed services personnel, flyovers - it was all done to evoke the emotions of the audience....

The NFL may be beginning to show signs of a ratings rebound for its daytime windows, however, primetime is still in the midst of a massive decline. The Week 7 edition of Sunday Night Football featured the Seahawks and the Cardinals, an exciting contest between two of the most exciting teams in the league. Though, the contest only averaged a 7.9 rating and 14.31 million viewers. That figure represents a 35 percent decline from last year’s Week 7 matchup between the Cowboys and the Eagles(12.2), and a 33 percent decline in viewership (21.45 million).

This past week DeAndre Hopkins got into a bit of a dust-up with supporters of President Donald Trump. While heading to his team’s showdown against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, Hopkins came across a caravan of Trump fans. The fans in question later accused him of flipping them off and driving recklessly, while he denied the latter charge. On Wednesday, footage emerged seemingly contradicting Hopkins’ claim.
