Outgoing NJ Gov. Phil Murphy was not in New Jersey when a state of emergency was declared Saturday night, leaving Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way — now serving as acting governor — to make the declaration in his stead. “In preparation for this storm, I am issuing a State of Emergency for all 21 counties out of an abundance of caution, authorizing our state’s emergency services personnel to activate as necessary,” Acting Governor Way announced in a statement Saturday. The term-limited Democrat, who is known for taking frequent vacations, often to his luxe Italian villa, made no public announcement about his...

A budding and potentially powerful Nor’easter is threatening to bring “major” coastal flooding impacts to parts of the mid-Atlantic Sunday into Monday, prompting New Jersey to already declare a state of emergency. The combination of strong and persistent northeast winds and high astronomical tides will send pounding surf into the Atlantic coast from Virginia to New England. But the brunt of the flooding appears focused on the New Jersey and Delaware coasts, along with Delaware Bay. Coastal Flood Watches are in effect from Sunday through Monday as 12–15-foot waves could mean some areas could see tides reach 2–4 feet above...

A powerful storm off the East Coast with tropical winds and rains could develop into a nor’easter over the weekend into Monday. It’s forecast to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, rough surf and coastal flooding. The coast from North Carolina to near New York City will be significantly impacted, according to AccuWeather. On Friday afternoon, New Jersey declared a state of emergency ahead of the dangerous storm. The Staten Island Half Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, has also been canceled due to the storm. “A coastal low is expected to develop off the Southeast U.S. Coast early Saturday and strengthen through...

An urgent weather warning has been issued for eight East Coast states with a bomb cyclone expected to unleash hurricane conditions in the region. Meteorologists predict that states from Maine to New York will see the worst impacts, with dangerous flooding and widespread power outages predicted to start on Wednesday evening. A bomb cyclone is a meteorological term for a storm between the tropics and polar region that rapidly strengthens over a 24-hour period, often leading to considerable damage. This super-charged storm will bring wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, as well as torrential rainfall of eight...

The National Weather Service has started issuing its first Winter Storm Warnings across the Northeast and New England, including Boston and Providence, in advance of a potential nor’easter that could dump plowable snow on millions of people in the region starting Monday. More than 20 million Americans across the region had been under Winter Storm Watches as forecasters began to keep an eye on computer forecast models showing the potential for a disruptive winter storm. As those models began to come into agreement, however, the decision was made to start upgrading those winter weather alerts to Winter Storm Warnings.

White on White PrivilegeIt used to be that Americans, who were free to disagree on everything, had one safe space where they could speak civilly to each other. No more; we can’t even agree on the weather because SCIENCE! Or something sort of like science. Take this weekend’s storm in New England:CNBC - Climate change, particularly the warming ocean, probably influenced the strength of the storm, atmospheric researchers said.Much warmer ocean waters “are certainly playing a role in the strengthening of the storm system and increased moisture available for the storm,” said University of Oklahoma meteorology professor Jason Furtado…[before whispering...

A powerful nor'easter moving toward Boston could bring snowfall totals high enough to break previous January records, with more than 2 feet of accumulation possible. The largest snowfall in January in Boston took place back in 2015, when we had 24.6 inches of snow; the largest snowfall ever in the city was President's Day weekend 2003, with 27.6 inches of snow. Those records may still be standing Saturday evening, but there's also a chance they are both broken. Greater Boston will likely see between 18 and 28 inches, and some pockets could even see more than 30 inches where the...

More than 470,000 people are without power in Massachusetts Wednesday morning as a nor’easter pounded the region with fierce winds and heavy flooding. The state’s outage map shows a whopping 473,200 people without power as of 8:20 a.m. Wind gusts reached 97 mph at the height of the storm — and although the wind is expected to die down as the morning progresses, gusts still reached around 70 mph on the outer Cape early Wednesday, NBC 10 Boston reported. About half of the town of Chatham was left without power Wednesday morning as the storm tore down trees and branches,...

New York and New Jersey both issued a state of emergency on Monday ahead of a nor'easter that descended on the region Tuesday morning. "I am proactively declaring a State of Emergency to ensure we can provide the necessary resources to respond to this storm and protect lives and property in regions where the forecast is calling for significant rainfall," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said in a release on Monday "I am encouraging New Yorkers to prepare now for inclement weather expected over the coming days and urging commuters to take precaution ahead of heavy rainfall expected tomorrow...

A nor'easter is developing along the U.S. East Coast and will bringing rain, wind and snow to parts of the Northeast. Similar to the storm earlier this week, named Winter Storm Dane by The Weather Channel, this weekend nor'easter is expected to develop from the teaming up of energy from two jet streams. However, this weekend storm will track much farther east than the storm earlier this week. This means some areas that were soaked with heavy rain earlier this week may instead see snow. Other areas hammered with snow earlier in the week may see little precipitation. However, some...

When folks across the eastern United States hear the term “nor’easter” they typically think of snow. But the recent storm that brushed the region’s coast left some thinking of a different word -- sand. The brunt of the "no-name nor’easter," as some are calling it, focused on the coast of the Carolinas, particularly the Outer Banks. “For much of the weekend, winds [were] gusting over 60 mph around Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, fueling massive waves that demolished dunes, exposing homes to the brutal surf,” AccuWeather National Weather Reporter Jonathan Petramala said during a report on the AccuWeather TV network.More images...

A storm will strengthen rapidly and bring a dose of drenching rain, high winds and even some high-elevation snow to the northeastern United States into Thursday. The latest indications are the storm will strengthen at a fast enough pace into Thursday to be classified as a bomb cyclone. The barometric pressure has to fall at least 24 millibars, or 0.71 of an inch of Mercury, in 24 hours for the bomb cyclone criteria to be met.

While coastal communities in New England are still recovering from costly beach erosion due to last week's coastal storm, another one could be on the way this week -- and it's expected to intensify rapidly. Some models are even suggesting this possible nor'easter could strengthen so quickly it could become a "bomb cyclone," which generally is marked by a pressure drop of 24 millibars (a unit of pressure) within 24 hours. Winds could reach tropical storm-force (39 mph+) with even higher gusts by Wednesday

You Should Deliver Yachts March 31, 2019 by CW4 MICHAEL W. CARR By Michael Carr – "“You should deliver yachts! Really, its good money and you will always have work.” “I’m not sure,” he replied to his friend’s recommendation. He was not a “yachty” at heart and was not sure about sailing rich people’s boats from place to place. But he did like to sail and certainly needed to work. “Just give it a try,” his friend encouraged. So he did. But now, close reaching across the Gulf of Maine, heading towards the Cape Cod Canal from Southwest Harbor Maine,...

On the first day of spring, the fourth nor’easter in a month is barreling toward the Big Apple, where it is expected to dump as much as 10 inches of snow and disrupt travel Wednesday. A winter storm warning is in effect from 12 a.m. Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday, with heavy snow and winds of about 45 mph expected, according to AccuWeather. “The wintry mix during the evening commute will change to all snow overnight (Wednesday) as the temperatures fall to the upper 20s,” AccuWeather meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said. The snow will intensify during the day Wednesday and is...

At the start of 2018, a nor'easter winter storm intensified so quickly that it became what meteorologists call a "bomb cyclone." It appears that's happening again. Winter storm Riley, as the Weather Channel has named it, is bringing potentially record-setting flooding to the Northeast, dumping rain and snow, and whipping the East Coast with wind gusts that are expected to reach hurricane force. The storm is now undergoing a rapid intensification process called "bombogenesis," which means its central pressure is dropping quickly (an indicator of a storm's strength). Such bomb cyclone conditions are not uncommon for nor'easter storms. But this...

An unusually powerful storm is threatening the East Coast of the U.S. this week with heavy snow, high winds, and record-shattering cold not seen in some places since the early 20th Century — if at all. The storm will be the result of a combination of three strong pieces of atmospheric energy, known to meteorologists as shortwaves. Think of these shortwaves as protein bars for storm formation. This particular storm, which is already beginning to form off the coast of Florida, will devour enough of them to allow it to become so powerful that it will contain hurricane force winds...

There's a new attraction for thousands of people enjoying the long holiday weekend on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Shelly Island is a destination you won't find on a standard map. The giant barrier island suddenly formed in the Atlantic Ocean, almost overnight. CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann reports the mile-long island, which measures as wide as a football field, has attracted hundreds of tourists by boat for the Fourth of July. Pilot Larry Ihler told Strassmann the island "has definitely gotten bigger" and is "more built up." Strassmann set out by kayak on Monday to explore Shelly Island with County...
