New York and New Jersey both issued a state of emergency on Monday ahead of a nor'easter that descended on the region Tuesday morning.

"I am proactively declaring a State of Emergency to ensure we can provide the necessary resources to respond to this storm and protect lives and property in regions where the forecast is calling for significant rainfall," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said in a release on Monday

"I am encouraging New Yorkers to prepare now for inclement weather expected over the coming days and urging commuters to take precaution ahead of heavy rainfall expected tomorrow morning," she added.

Grew up in the NE, Westchester County NY and Orange county NY.

We had northeasters all the time. It was just weather. A weatherman named Tex Weatherby would simply forecast them on the old fashioned weather map showing lows and fronts. No stupid hype like bomb cyclone etc.

Whether it was wind, rain or snow life just went on because it was just how nature worked.

This hyper-reaction is just manipulation taking advantage of ignorance.

‘state of emergency’ is a govt flunkie for hitting the jackpot.

fedgov opens the purse and pours money into the state to ‘help’ with the ‘tragedy’ that is 3” of snow...

Actually that was Tex Antoine. He was also a bit of a cartoonist and used to draw a character named “Uncle Weatherbee” (from Weather Bureau) who would make the predictions thereby absolving Tex from bad predictions.

We used to refer to a Nor’Easter as a “three day blow”

The level span switch needs adjusting. Better have a standby pump. That fast of cycling will burn the motor out.

The bob cyclone is a new one this year. It’s like when they started using Polar vortex....aka...a Jet stream path

This hyper-reaction is just manipulation taking advantage of ignorance.

It's an opportunity to "sell" climate change.

What’s even worse is that “nor’Easters” aren’t even that!

A nor’Easter is a storm that New England gets that comes FROM the northeast.

Whereas weather generally comes from the west, sometimes a swirling storm will bring cold air and low issues from the northeast making a storm - but a storm that is unusually more powerful, brings more moisture from the ocean and serious sea concerns.

But now it’s “it’s raining. And this is the northeast. So we’re calling it a nor’Easter.” It’s getting stupid.

I was in Maryland for a Nor’easter in Feb 2003. That one was the real deal. We got 30 inches of snow in 18 hours. There was a 6 foot snow drift over my car. It started to snow on Saturday, and my parking lot was not plowed out until Wednesday afternoon.

The big parking lots at NSA on Fort Meade had huge piles of snow that didn’t melt away until April.

This rain traveled right up the east coast from the south of us. It originally came from the west but now it’s going north up the coast.

Exactly. I am just over the line from Westchester. The idea that we need the federal government, or any government at all, to rescue us from every heavy rain storm reflects how far we have fallen as a people—and why the country as a whole seems to be falling so easily now.
