Obama's current lead also reflects the large party-identification advantage the Democrats now enjoy - 55 percent of all voters call themselves Democrats or say they lean toward the party while just 36 percent call themselves Republicans or lean that way. Obama's personal ratings have improved, as well: 62 percent of voters overall say they have a favorable opinion of him compared to only 26 percent who have an unfavorable opinion. By comparison, McCain's ratings are 49 percent favorable to 37 percent unfavorable, representing a drop from his previous 54 percent favorable rating. Obama is trusted more to handle what may...

Come hell or high water-ran the conventional wisdom-Republicans could rely on two issues to win elections: the war on terror and values. Then came Mark Foley. The drip-drip-drip of scandal surrounding the former Congressman from Florida, which became a deluge this week, now threatens to sink Republican hopes of keeping control of Congress, says the NEWSWEEK poll out today. For the first time since 2001, the NEWSWEEK poll shows that more Americans trust the Democrats than the GOP on moral values and the war on terror. Fully 53 percent of Americans want the Democrats to win control of Congress next...

The Newsweek Poll was conducted almost entirely on Friday and Saturday morning. It didn't poll the Eastern and Central time zones on Friday night. Weekend polls like this usually undersample Republicans. Are we to believe that in the last month there has been more than a 6% net switch in partisan identification? That is what happened when you compare the internals. Independents stayed the same at 28% but Republicans dropped by 6% and Democrats went up by 6%. The article states, The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican...

Needs Freeping Big Time. At this moment only 16% of those voting agree that "The press is overemphasizing bad news", while 61% think that "Things are worse in the Iraq than the media says" and 23% believe that "The picture is fairly balanced and accurate". Who knew the Newsweek folks had such large extended families?
