Research was led by Shi Zhengli, a virologist known as the 'batwoman', who is best known for her work on coronaviruses at a lab in Wuhan A Chinese team has found a new bat coronavirus that carries the risk of animal-to-human transmission because it uses the same human receptor as the virus that causes Covid-19. The study was led by Shi Zhengli - a leading virologist known as the "batwoman" due to her extensive research on bat coronaviruses - at the Guangzhou Laboratory along with researchers from the Guangzhou Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University and the Wuhan Institute of Virology....

The new virus is even closer related to MERS, a deadlier type of coronavirus that kills up to a third of people it infects. Virologist Shi Zhengli, known as 'Batwoman' for her work on coronaviruses, led the discovery, published in a top scientific journal. Tests showed HKU5-CoV-2 infiltrated human cells in the same way as SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind Covid. Sharing their discovery in the journal Cell, the Beijing-funded researchers admitted it posed a 'high risk of spillover to humans, either through direct transmission or facilitated by intermediate hosts.'

New coronavirus strain was identified in Cyprus as stated tonight in the Cypriot media by the professor of the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Cyprus, Dr. Leontios Kostrikis. The Professor according to what the website broadcast sigmalive.com, claims it is a mutation Deltacron identified in 25 cases and it appears that the strains have a genetic background of mutation Delta. “We found a large number of variants identified only in Omicron with differences in other strains because its genome has 30 different variants. From these the 10 variants of Omicron were identified in the incidents we identified...

the first ten cases of the AY3 coronavirus strain based on the Delta strain had been found in Israel. The AY3 strain is based on the Delta variant, from which a number of further mutations have been found, including several considered more "virulent." Of those infected, eight had returned from abroad and two were infected inside Israel. ....This week, a representative of the Health Ministry in the Knesset said of the strain that it "causes concern and will lead us to lockdown" and expressed concern about the possibility of it being discovered in Israel, since it is a variant with...

The skyrocketing number of COVID-19 cases in India is likely driven by a “far more infectious and probably far more deadly” variant — and is driving hospitals to “beyond [a] crisis point,” a top physician warned Tuesday. Dr. Zarir Udwadia, who works in Mumbai hospitals and consults for the government, said he has seen “ward after ward full of patients struggling to breathe on ventilators of different forms and shapes.”

A variant of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 called P.1 seems to be able to reinfect people who already recovered from COVID-19, despite whatever protections their immune systems built up. The variant, which was discovered and began circulating in Brazil back in December, poses a new threat that has scientists worried about the potential for yet another major wave of the coronavirus, The New York Times reports. It’s currently surging in the city of Manaus, but has also spread to 24 countries as well as several US states. “It’s right to be worried about P.1, and this data gives us the reason...

People with the highly contagious UK strain of COVID-19 are less likely to report sky-high fevers than those with the original illness, according to a study released Wednesday. But patients with the newer virus variant report suffering from a sore throat, aching muscles and fatigue more often, according to the survey, released by Britain’s Office for National Statistics. Symptoms of the new strain differ from the three main ones associated with the original COVID-19 virus — fever, continuous cough and loss of smell or taste, the UK Sun reported, citing the survey and health officials.

Another new COVID-19 variant has been detected in the US, UK and other countries, according to scientists. The B1525 variant is similar to B117 — the highly contagious strain found in Britain in mid-December that’s since made its way to the US, the Guardian reported. The new variant has popped up in 10 countries so far, including Denmark, the US, Nigeria and Australia. Thirty-two cases have been reported in the UK. No cases of the new mutant have so far been reported in the US.

U.S. Army scientists are analyzing a new COVID-19 strain found in the United Kingdom and investigating if the current vaccines are sufficient to fight it. Scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research last week began analyzing data to determine the extent of the new mutated variant's danger and to try and determine if the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will fight off the strain."It stands to reason that this mutation isn't a threat, but you never know," Nelson Michael, a doctor at the Center for Infectious Diseases Research at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, told CNN. "We...

A new study from Los Alamos National Laboratory has revealed a new, now-dominant strain of the coronavirus which appears to be more contagious, according to the authors. Meanwhile, doctors in the United States are wondering if the harder-hit East Coast is being hit with a different version of the virus than the West Coast. Emerging in early February, the new strain migrated from Europe to the East Coast of the United States, where it became the dominant strain across the world beginning in mid-March. Wherever the new strain has appeared, it’s quickly infected far more people than earlier strains which...

FIRST IDENTIFIED IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY [snip] In the tradition of the Hong Kong flu and Spanish influenza, please welcome ``A/California/7/2004 (H3N2).'' Or you can just call it A/California for short. It's a distinct strain of the flu that turned up here last fall and has recently been certified unique by federal health officials. [snip] And it is unknown if this year's influenza vaccine offers any protection against it. But doctors are encouraging people who have not yet received a flu shot to roll up their sleeves and get one soon. [snip]. [snip] More sophisticated tests carried out at the...
