Coronavirus Mutates Into Now-Dominant, More Contagious Form As Doctors Ponder ‘East Coast vs. West Coast’ Strains

A new study from Los Alamos National Laboratory has revealed a new, now-dominant strain of the coronavirus which appears to be more contagious, according to the authors. Meanwhile, doctors in the United States are wondering if the harder-hit East Coast is being hit with a different version of the virus than the West Coast.

Emerging in early February, the new strain migrated from Europe to the East Coast of the United States, where it became the dominant strain across the world beginning in mid-March. Wherever the new strain has appeared, it’s quickly infected far more people than earlier strains which emerged from Wuhan, China. Within weeks it became the most prevalent strain in some nations.

In addition to spreading faster, it may make people vulnerable to a second infection after a first bout with the disease, the report warned.

The 33-page report was posted Thursday on BioRxiv, a website that researchers use to share their work before it is peer reviewed, an effort to speed up collaborations with scientists working on COVID-19 vaccines or treatments. That research has been largely based on the genetic sequence of earlier strains and might not be effective against the new one. –LA Times (via Yahoo)

According to the report, fourteen mutations have been identified in the spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2, the protrusions on the exterior of the virus which make up its namesake ‘corona.’

The report was based on a computational analysis of more than 6,000 coronavirus samples from around the world, collected by the Germany-based Global Initiative for Sharing All Influenza Data.

Assisted by scientists at Duke University and the University of Sheffield in England, the Los Alamos team focused on a mutation called D614G, which controls changes in spike proteins.

BS...NYC has about half the deaths....am I correct? People who live, commute, dine densely...it’s a DENSITY issue, most likely.

NY, NJ, and MA are 11.5% of the population and represent 55% of the infection / deaths. But, they are NOT the only East Coast States of the USA.
Florida, with 22 MILLION people is an East Coast State and the incidence of infections/deaths is far far lower than those three East Coast States. Lower than the states of California and Washington, West Coast States.
More BS being pushed as “science” by people who have a political agenda and want to see the shutdown continue for political reasons.

Yes, especially when large numbers of people live in the same building and share the same circulating air supply.

And the nation has been locked away carefully, ensuring lots of people with no immunity.

And New York being “hit harder”, is likely true. But it’s impossible to know by how much, until you figure in medical incompetence and indifference (sending covid into unaffected nursing homes, refusing to send patients to the Navy ship) and financial incentive corruption.

So who knows?

I think NY accounts for 33.3% (1/3), but NY & NJ account for nearly 50%. 50% would actually be 33,900. Note: I didn't do the actual math, as I just kind of whipped this together. 8>)

From: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1103688/coronavirus-covid19-deaths-us-by-state/

New York = 24,576
New Jersey = 7,871
Total = 32,447

As of May 4, 2020, there have been around 67,800 deaths related to COVID-19 in the United States.

Number of deaths from coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States as of May 4, 2020, by state

I used to, and still do, adore real science. The scientific method combined with curiosity, freedom, and free enterprise has pushed the frontiers of science to the point that one of our creations has ‘left’ the Solar System. Voyager still sends signals. The so called ‘science’ used these days is anything but. When I explain the pure science to environmental wackos, their eyes glaze and their mouths pout.
