The French Pacific islands of New Caledonia began voting Sunday on whether to become an independent nation, in a closely-watched test of support for France in one of its many territories scattered around the globe. Some 18,000 kilometers (11,000 miles) from the French mainland, New Caledonia is home to a quarter of the world’s known supplies of nickel — a vital electronics component — and is a strategic foothold for France in the Pacific. Voting in New Caledonia’s 284 polling stations opened at 8:00 am local time Sunday (2100 GMT Saturday) and was to end at 6:00 pm, with results...

A Monash geoscientist and a team of international researchers have discovered the existence of an ocean floor was destroyed 50 to 20 million years ago, proving that New Caledonia and New Zealand are geographically connected. Using new computer modelling programs Wouter Schellart and the team reconstructed the prehistoric cataclysm that took place when a tectonic plate between Australia and New Zealand was subducted 1100 kilometres into the Earth's interior and at the same time formed a long chain of volcanic islands at the surface. Mr Schellart conducted the research, published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, in collaboration...

NEW Caledonian authorities have fined and expelled an Australian tourist convicted of assaulting border police when he arrived at Noumea's airport. John Connel, a 53-year-old farmer who had flown to the South Pacific island from Brisbane, blamed alcohol and a relationship break-up for the incident, the Nouvelle Caledoniennes newspaper reported. A court in the French territory heard this week that after arriving at Noumea's Tontouta airport, Connel threw his passport at the head of an immigration officer and yelled insults such as "F... you, Froggies!". He threw punches at two border police officers before being subdued and locked in a...

A medical study says the incidence of thyroid cancer in New Caledonia is the highest in the world. The study published in the Medical Bulletin of New Caledonia and French Polynesia says the rate is 17 times higher than the global average for women, and eight times higher for men. The study has failed to establish a reason why New Caledonia’s rates are so high, while detailing that Kanaks are three times more likely to get thyroid cancer than people of European descent. A link has been established between such cancers and exposure to radiation but looking at figures from...

This past week, there have been magnitude-6.0 or greater earthquakes in California, New Caledonia, and Iran. If the Earth-worshippers could somehow blame this on industrialization or capitalism, they could make billions in regulatory madness! Nevertheless, I am still waiting for them to link loggers to Radon in basements, power lines to Earth's weakening magnetic field, and pollution to dimming of the sun...
