WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have gained ground on Democrats in registering voters in three battleground states and kept their razor-thin advantage in Iowa — encouraging news for Donald Trump eight weeks before Election Day. Republicans added hundreds of thousands of voters to the rolls since 2012 in states including Florida and Arizona, and narrowed the gap in North Carolina, according to data compiled by The Associated Press. In Iowa, Republicans prevented Democrats from surpassing them, aided by a court ruling upholding a ban on voting by ex-felons, who often register as Democrats. As Election Day approaches, voter registration drives are...

California is once again in the national bull’s eye for a proposed major hike in its tobacco excise tax, with both sides touting potential ripple effects upon public health and the tobacco industry. Proposition 56, which is on the Nov. 8 ballot, gives Californians the ability to raise the tax by $2 per pack to $2.87. California is not only the nation’s most populous state at 39.1 million, but also a trend setter for statewide propositions and referendums, Since Californians are responsible for about 6.6 percent of the U.S. cigarette and snuff volume consumption, analysts have said the effect on...

The NCAA has now joined the NBA and other organizations pulling its official events out of the state of North Carolina due to concern over the state's House Bill 2. Emphasizing an "inclusive atmosphere for all college athletes, coaches, administrators and fans," the NCAA announced it would be pulling seven championships from the state, including a site for the 2017 NCAA Tournament. "Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships," said Mark Emmert, NCAA president said in a statement. "We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events...

The NCAA will move seven championship events this academic year from the state of North Carolina, including the first and second round of the 2017 NCAA men's basketball tournament, because of the state's controversial HB2 law. The NCAA's Board of Governors made the announcement late Monday night. The decision comes on the heels of the NBA moving the all-star game in February from Charlotte to New Orleans.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Republican Donald Trump appears to have carved out a wider path to the White House as a number of states including Florida and Ohio are no longer considered likely wins for Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos States of the Nation project released on Saturday. The project, which combines opinion polls with an analysis of voting patterns under different election scenarios, still shows Clinton would have the best chance of winning the presidency if the Nov. 8 election were held today. Yet Trump has caught up to her level of support in several...

The GWU Battleground Poll published on September 9 shows Donald Trump a clear path to victory: win the conservative vote. The data in this poll has been consistent over the last two decades, and the data in the latest poll is no different. The overwhelming majority of Americans are self-identified conservatives. The September 2016 Battleground Poll shows that 54% of all Americans are self-identified conservatives and only 38% are self-identified liberals, which means that if the tiny "moderate" 3% and the equally tiny "unsure/refused" 4% are excluded, then the conservative candidate would beat the liberal candidate by a landslide of...

Statement of Methodology: This survey of 500 likely North Carolina general election voters was conducted between September 5 and September 7, 2016, and is based on live telephone interviews of adults who indicated they were likely to vote in the November 2016 general election for president. Each area’s quota and demographic information -- including race and age -- was determined from previous like elections and 2010 Census data. Samples of both standard landline and cell phones were called using a probability-proportionate-to-size method, which means that the phone numbers assigned to each county were proportional to the number of likely voters...

The poll is a statistical dead heat and is within the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. When asked who they think will win the November presidential election, 49 percent said Clinton and 33 percent Trump, with 17 percent undecided. Libertarian Gary Johnson was the choice of 4 percent of voters, with 8 percent...

CHARLOTTE -- It wasn’t a typical Sunday for members of the Antioch Road to Glory International Ministries in Charlotte. The predominately African-American church held a “Day of Endorsement” for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Lafonda Jackson has attended the church for almost three decades and says most members support the effort. “It’s not about upsetting anyone. It’s not about choosing sides. It’s about change. In the church right now, we have full support; no one has been asked to vote or swing one way or the other,” said Jackson. “It is completely up to every individual in here, and there’s...

A new Emerson College Polling Society poll has good news for North Carolina Republicans after several polls put Democrats in the lead here. The survey of 800 likely voters found GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump with 45 percent support to 43 percent support for Democrat Hillary Clinton. In the U.S. Senate race, Republican incumbent Sen. Richard Burr had 45 percent, with Democrat Deborah Ross receiving 41 percent. Burr’s lead is barely outside the poll’s 3.4 percent margin of error. The margin also means the presidential race is statistically tied in North Carolina. Other recent polls have given a narrow lead...

The Supreme Court on Wednesday turned away an emergency appeal from Republican leaders in North Carolina who were hoping to reinstate new voting rules that were struck down in July as racially biased. The justices said they were deadlocked 4-4 and would not intervene, leaving in place the state’s rules for casting ballots and early voting that were used before 2013. The vote split on ideological lines.
