WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington, D.C.’s mayor urged calm Monday as some 340 National Guard troops were being activated while the city prepared for potentially violent protests surrounding Congress’ expected vote to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. According to a U.S. defense official, Mayor Muriel Bowser put in a request on New Year’s Eve to have Guard members on the streets from Jan. 5-7th, to help with the protests. The Wisconsin Air National Guard has identified the F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot killed during a crash in Michigan's Upper Peninsula earlier this week as 37-year-old Capt. Durwood "Hawk" Jones. Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf ordered National Guardsmen to Philadelphia on Tuesday, following a night of riots that left 30 police officers injured and various businesses vandalized. The riots began after police shot and killed 27-year-old Walter Wallace Jr., an African American man, who officers said approached them with a knife. Video of the incident showed Wallace walking towards officers with his mother attempting to hold him back, and when the camera points away police fire several shots.
