<p>Jackson, Mississippi (AP) —Four words on the Mississippi license plate have triggered a federal proceeding.</p><p>An American atheist, the Mississippi Humanist Association, and three non-religious state residents filed a proceeding against the state on Tuesday over the “In God We Trust” license plate. The complaint alleges that the Mississippi Revenue Director violated people’s freedom of speech and religion by forcing them to display religious messages on their cars.</p>

Two Black high school students in Mississippi are reportedly having to share their prestigious honor with their white classmates. According to Mississippi Today, West Point High, which is located in the eastern portion of the state, is facing backlash for changing its class ranking system after it announced Ikeria Washington as valedictorian and Layla Temple as salutatorian for the Class of 2021 on May 24. On Thursday (June 3), the school wrote that it recognizes students with both the highest Quality Point Average (QPA) and Grade Point Average (GPA).

WATER VALLEY, Miss. (AP) — A former Mississippi lawmaker was found shot to death during the weekend in a rural area outside the burned home where her sister-in-law was found dead after Christmas. Ashley Henley, 40, was a Republican who served in the state House from January 2016 to January 2020 from a district in DeSoto County....Henley had been mowing grass at the home before she was killed.

Police sparked outrage when they posed for a photo with suspect Eric Boykin in Prentiss, Mississippi, on Tuesday. Boykin was accused of robbing a bank at gunpoint and fleeing the scene. Multiple law enforcement agencies including the FBI and ATF joined the manhunt. He was found about 600 yards from the bank in a wooded area. The population loss was not large enough to cost Mississippi a congressional seat this time. Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Indiana’s mask mandate will end April 6, a decision that comes after mounting pressure from within his own Republican party. A federal district court judge ruled Thursday caps on religious services in Washington D.C. were unconstitutional going into the Easter holiday. Judge Trevor N. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) is expected set to sign a bill on Thursday banning transgender athletes from competing on girls and women’s sports teams. A judge has ordered a new runoff election for Ward 1 alderman in Aberdeen, Mississippi, after evidence of fraud and criminal activity.
