PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Pakistani army says it has discovered a van packed with almost 900 pounds of explosives in the country’s northwest. It says militants planned to use the vehicle in a suicide bombing. The army media center says the van was discovered during a raid Sunday on a house in the Khyber tribal region near the Afghan border. Six suspected militants were arrested in the raid.

(JTA) -- The United Nations Security Council failed to agree on a statement calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. The Security Council met in a four-hour emergency session Saturday night just hours after Israel began its ground invasion of Gaza. It was the council's third meeting since the Gaza operation, dubbed Operation Cast Lead, began Dec. 27. ANOTHER Australian soldier has been killed in Afghanistan after a rocket exploded in a defence compound. He is the eighth Australian soldier to die in the conflict zone. Australian Defence Force Chief Angus Houston told a press conference at defence headquarters this morning that he would not be releasing the man's name yet at the request of his family.
