Fad Diets Apr 8, 2003 4:58 pm US/Eastern (WBZ) (Boston) The number is staggering. There are 127 Million overweight Americans, and now many are turning to unhealthy fad diets to lose the weight. As WBZ's Dr. Mallika Marshall tells us, the medical community has come out with a stern warning for those seeking a quick solution to weight loss. The message is clear, Americans trying to lose weight by eating more protein and fat while reducing carbohydrates could, in fact, be hurting themselves. While these so-called "fad" diets may be appealing, the American College of Preventive Medicine has come out...

USO CANTEEN GOES WEST We call it the Wild West. To many it means guns, cattle, horses and gunfights. But it was also homesteading and pioneering. It was a rugged country back then with little amenities and much danger. It represented the growth of our nation from independent states and scattered people to a united country. Read about the colorful west and some of the people who made it. TEXAS RANGERS: These were Indian fighting militiamen who were established in a Texas area that was freed of Mexican rule. After Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana overthrew the...

Reading A_Conservative_in_Cambridge's question about FReeper musicians (noting how the Left likes to turn out with their silly little drums), in his excellent report on the Rally in Harvard Square (that's right!), I got to wondering how many pipers and Scottish drummers there are among Freepers (I know of one locally). This would be an excellent opportunity to put down the Left even further, by turning out for rallies.

``I support our troops, I just don't support the war.'' You're hearing that more and more from many people who oppose the war. It's a rhetorical blanket, worn for protection lest people question their patriotism. But it doesn't always sound sincere and it occasionally sounds absurd. For instance, during last Tuesday's Pearl Jam concert in Denver, lead singer Eddie Vedder rapped the war in Iraq while assuring the crowd ``I support the troops.'' But near the show's end he took a mask of President Bush -- the Commander in Chief of the armed forces -- impaled it on a microphone,...

The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, in what is now historic Annapolis, MD. The history of the Academy has often reflected the history of the United States itself. As the U.S. Navy has moved from a fleet of sail and steam-powered ships to a high tech fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships as well as supersonic aircraft, the Academy has changed also. The Naval Academy gives young men and women the up-to-date academic and professional training needed to be effective naval and marine officers in their assignments after graduation....

Citing security concerns, the annual Easter Egg roll at the White House will be closed to the public this year and replaced with a smaller event for the children of troops involved in the U.S. -led war on Iraq. About 12,000 parents and children of active duty and reserve troops will be invited to the event April 21, fewer than half the normal crowd of 40,000, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said Friday. "It's reduced as a result of the security situation," he said. "A smaller group is more appropriate." During World War II, the Easter egg roll was...

IN CENTRAL IRAQ - There is a war on, and danger lurks ahead, and the Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry are getting desperate — for tobacco. It's been two weeks since they left they relative luxury of their camp in Kuwait and their supplies of cigarettes and chewing tobacco are running out. They are rationing their precious supplies, and even begging smokes from local farmers. An army, Napoleon reputedly said, marches on its stomach. But for generations, armies have also marched on nicotine. And these Marines — smoking more than usual under the stress of battle conditions —...
