There was no evidence of conspiracy among climate scientists in the leaked emails – so why was the University of East Anglia's response so pathetic? The lay public, when presented with confusing data and competing arguments about climate change, deploy the mental shortcut of believing the people they most trust. Trust in the communicator is therefore crucial. Unfortunately the three main climate change communicators: politicians, journalists and environmental campaigners, are among the least trusted people in society – fighting it out for bottom place in the ranking with lawyers and car salesmen. Its really is funny when you think about it. Its another fuzzy bunny the left has rolled out to demoralize and destroy capitalism. Remember the "whole in the ozone"? Remember they said the ozone would be gone in ten years? That was 1980, within 10 years the hole was the smallest ever recorded. When scientists become advocates for their scientific hypotheses, whether for political or self-aggrandizing reasons, they cease being scientists, and they become bullies, or worse. When scientists belittle, deride, condescend, stifle, censure or chastise the contributions of other scientists with whom they disagree, they are nothing less than evil. The blogosphere is abuzz with news of the latest global warming scandal. A latter day "Daniel Ellsberg" has released the climate equivalent of the Pentagon Papers onto the web. In 1971 former Defense Department employee Daniel Ellsberg turned over a large collection of Pentagon Vietnam War related documents to the New York Times. Recently an unknown whistler blower released 61 megabytes of documents along with emails involving communications between Professor Phil Jones, Director of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, and various other scientists who support the claim that humans can raise air temperatures by increasing...

... Yet even a partial review of the emails is highly illuminating. In them, scientists appear to urge each other to present a "unified" view on the theory of man-made climate change while discussing the importance of the "common cause"; to advise each other on how to smooth over data so as not to compromise the favored hypothesis; to discuss ways to keep opposing views out of leading journals; and to give tips on how to "hide the decline" of temperature in certain inconvenient data. ...

... I can't see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report," Jones writes. "Kevin and I will keep them out somehow--even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!" In another, Jones and Mann discuss how they can pressure an academic journal not to accept the work of climate skeptics with whom they disagree.
