President Donald Trump took the lead in Maine’s second congressional district, according to a poll from the Bangor Daily News, indicating a shift the president’s way in a battleground state that could prove decisive in the presidential election. Trump’s eight-point lead over his Democrat opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, is outside the survey’s 6.2 percent margin of error in the second district. The poll finds Trump at 49 percent with Biden at 41 percent.

A poll released Tuesday found Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Democrat challenger Sara Gideon within one point of each other in the race for U.S. Senate in Maine. The poll, conducted by Bangor Daily News and Digital Research Insights from September 25 through October 4, showed Gideon with 44 percent support and Collins with 43 percent support, well within the poll’s 4.4 percent margin of error. The latest results point to a potential rebound for Collins, who is seeking her fifth term in the Senate but had been, up until now, trailing Gideon in recent public polls by four to...

Nick Muto has fished up and down the New England coast and there is nothing that gets his blood boiling more than the sight of a seal. Muto, whose two boats fish for groundfish such as skate and monkfish as well as lobster, is among a growing group of anglers, beach goers and local officials who are quick to blame everything from disease to depleted fisheries to increased shark sightings on the exploding seal population. “Areas that we used to traditionally fish that were as close to guarantees as you could get have been strip mined of fish, and the...

The father of Ka'Mauri Harrison, the Harvey fourth-grader suspended last week after a teacher saw him move a BB gun out of the way during a virtual lesson, said the national response to the case has been "overwhelming," with offers of support from regular people and even the National Rifle Association. In the days since news of Harrison's six-day suspension broke, the 9-year-old and his family have been swamped with messages via email and social media, some pledging legal or financial help. "It's been overwhelming," Nyron Harrison said. Messages have been flooding in through Facebook and email, he said. "We've...

Total victory is upon us, folks. And some Republicans have managed to get on a path towards redemption with conservatives. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said he wouldn’t block the nominee. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) is a ‘no,’ but as we’ve said before—Maine is an oddball state. She gets a pass. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), a runner up in the biggest pain in the a** contest among the GOP, did initially say that she’s opposed to filling the Supreme Court vacancy left by Ruth Bade Ginsburg, but is now changing her tune. The last justice passed away last Friday making the...

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Ranked choice voting will be used for the first time in a presidential race under a ruling Tuesday by the Maine Supreme Court, which concluded a GOP petition drive came up short. The Supreme Judicial Court concluded that the Maine Republican Party failed to reach the threshold of signatures needed for a “People’s Veto” referendum aimed at rejecting a state law that expands ranked choice voting to the presidential election. The GOP collected tens of thousands of signatures but came up shy of the needed level of 67,067 after some were invalidated.

Early on in the coronavirus pandemic, Amanda Roy and her siblings considered bringing their 61-year-old mother, Anna Littlejohn, to live in their homes rather than in the Madison nursing home where she has spent nearly three years after developing a bone infection from a cyst on her knee. With other health problems including diabetes and high blood pressure, Littlejohn was especially vulnerable to COVID-19, an illness that has caused many of the state’s virus deaths as it has spread through long-term care facilities. But ultimately, Littlejohn’s children couldn’t make the logistics work to move her out of Maplecrest Rehabilitation and...

Republicans say confirming a replacement would be a problem Republican senators grew increasingly vocal in their warnings to President Donald Trump if he fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions, including threats not to vote for a replacement. Sessions was highlighting the independence of the Justice Department, and Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, wanted it to be perfectly clear that he would have the attorney general’s back. “Bizarrely,...
