PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Ranked choice voting will be used for the first time in a presidential race under a ruling Tuesday by the Maine Supreme Court, which concluded a GOP petition drive came up short.

The Supreme Judicial Court concluded that the Maine Republican Party failed to reach the threshold of signatures needed for a “People’s Veto” referendum aimed at rejecting a state law that expands ranked choice voting to the presidential election.

The GOP collected tens of thousands of signatures but came up shy of the needed level of 67,067 after some were invalidated.

While unorthodox, I see no downside for Trump as many Mainers will rank Biden last.

Cagey Cretins
Blue Oyster Cult

[Verse 1: Eric Bloom]
(Oh, cagey, what you got?)
What you got there dummy?
What you got there man?
(Oh, cagey, what you got?)
What you got there, honey?
What is it, a worm?

[Chorus: Albert Bouchard]
Dumb clouds are raging
Stupid clouds at my door
Creepy weather coming
Coming ‘round my floor
Dumb clouds stay away
Don’t come back no more!

[Verse 2: Eric Bloom]
(Oh, cagey, what you got?)
Got an awful tummy
Oh no, it’s inflamed
(Oh, cagey, what you got?)
It’s so lonely, honey
In the state of Maine

[Chorus: Albert Bouchard]
Dumb clouds are raging
Stupid clouds at my door
Creepy weather coming
Coming ‘round my floor
Dumb clouds stay away
And don’t come back no more!

[Bridge: Joe Bouchard & Eric Bloom]
I’m graduating in one more term
Because I haven’t any time to burn
Repeating taste of high-heeled shoe
An eel is waiting under the train
Being chased around by the neighbor’s cat!
Well, it’s so lonely in the state of Maine!

[Chorus: Albert Bouchard]
Dumb clouds are ringing
Ringing in my ear
Mother’s wombs are crying
Ringing in my fear
Mothers never run
Except when rape is near

[Outro]
(Oh, cagey)
(Oh, cagey)
(Oh, cagey)
(Oh, cagey)

I am amazed how the dems are able to change the rules of an election weeks before that election.

I always thought that was illegal

Ranked voting is a disaster and is used in places like Australia to keep the left in power. It’s just a way to cause chaos and so even if you win the majority, rather than going to a runoff it falls to how many people like a second and third choice so the balance of power will often be held by fringe candidates and parties.

It should be outlawed...completely. On federal elections, it needs to be challenged in federal courts.

As I understand it, if you win a majority, ranked voting plays no part. But if you win only a plurality, it is possible that the one who won the most votes, still can lose.

That could easily happen. Ranking allows liberals to vote for the Green candidate as their first choice, and the DemocRAT as their second choice.

If there is no ranked voting, then a voter must decide if they want to cast a protest vote for the Green, or for the DemocRAT.

Yes, but it is going to be funny to see how many Last Place Votes that Biden gets in Maine.

How about when they change them after the election is over? As in asking the judge to admit this carload of “found” ballots, or extend precinct voting hours?

after some [votes] were invalidated

Funny, we never see any Dem petition have just enough signatures invalidated to put it below the threshold

Something reeks here ... sounds like the Democrats' Dirty Tricks team is back at work

Ballot harvesting should also be outlawed nationwide. There is no way on earth that ballots should be allowed into the hands of partisan activists before they are submitted to election officials. Anyone who can’t see the possibility - even the probability - of massive corruption is either blind or rabidly partisan.

From the story “...Under the voting system, voters are allowed to rank all five candidates on the ballot. If no one wins a majority of first-place votes, then there are additional tabulations, aided by computers, in which last-place finishers are eliminated and votes reallocated based on those supporters’ second-place choices...”

So it could work out that the person who gets the most first place votes loses to the second place finisher after folks second choice is added.

Which is exactly what happened in 2018 in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, where the Republican got the most votes on Election night — but not quite a majority — and the new Democrat-mandated ranked choice scheme ousted him and selected the Democrat.

This time around Biden will very likely get a majority in Maine, but even if not there will be enough Green Weenies and Liberaltarians who rank Biden second (or at least ahead of Trump on the ballot) to put him over the top if necessary.
