WASHINGTON – As one of its first acts, the new Congress will consider denying citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants who are born in the United States. Those children, who are now automatically granted citizenship at birth, will be one of the first targets of the Republican-led House when it convenes in January. GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa, the incoming chairman of the subcommittee that oversees immigration, is expected to push a bill that would deny "birthright citizenship" to such children. The measure, assailed by critics as unconstitutional, is an indication of how the new majority intends to...

Republican Rep. Tom McClintock will make personal history in January when Republicans take control of the U.S. House. In his 25th year of elected office in Sacramento and Washington, it will mark the first time that McClintock will be part of the majority. As the new Congress prepares to organize, McClintock, who won his second term on Nov. 2, is eying a seat on the House Budget Committee.

Prop 19: When Worlds Collide. NO. If this simply allowed people to cultivate and smoke marijuana themselves and left the rest of us alone, it would be worth considering. But it goes much further and provides that “no person shall be … discriminated against or denied any right or privilege” for pot use, inviting a lawsuit every time an employer tries to require a drug test, for example. If you want to smoke pot in your own world, I don’t care. But don’t bring it into mine. Prop 20: Congressional Redistricting. YES. This finishes the work we began in...

Representative Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) delivered the following remarks today in the House of Representatives on unemployment and spending: Many people are asking why Congress is here today. I think the answer’s pretty simple: we’re not bankrupting the country fast enough and so we need to come back and spend more. In the merciful week that Congress was not in session, my constituents had one message: STOP THE SPENDING. Obviously, Congress isn’t listening. Over the past two years, this administration and this Congress have increased spending by nearly 18 percent and run up more debt in two years than the irresponsible...

Debate on HR 4213 Remarks by Representative Tom McClintock House Chamber, Washington, D.C. July 22, 2010 M. Speaker: Anyone who has experienced firsthand the quiet panic that stalks every waking hour of an unemployed family knows how frightening and debilitating is chronic unemployment. You watch your savings evaporate, you see your children going without the material things their friends enjoy, and you count down the months or even weeks until you won’t be able to make that crucial rent or house payment. That unemployment check is a lifeline in such times, and I fully appreciate and understand how desperately an...

If Steve Poizner upsets Meg Whitmanin the GOP side of the June 8 governor's primary, he can thank Democrats. The California Democratic Party and major labor unions have joined Poizner in attacking Whitman. The CDP is spending $1.8 million on its anti-Whitman television ad and the California Labor Federation has deployed 25,000 volunteers to campaign against Whitman. CDP and big labor think expected Democratic nominee Jerry Brown will have an easier time beating Poizner. Indeed, Brown leads Poizner 45 percent to 32 percent, while his lead over Whitman is a narrower 42 percent to 37 percent, according to the latest...

On the same day that Mexican President Felipe Calderon was schmoozing President Obama and Democratic members of Congress in Washington, another news story reported that “gun battles between security forces and armed attackers have killed nine people in two states along the U.S. border.” Since 1996, approximately 23,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico and along the U.S. border. In contrast, earlier this week news outlets reported that the number of U.S. military personnel who had died in nearly a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, since March 2001, reached nearly 5,400. There was a time when...

t’s hear it for Congressman Tom McClintock (R-CA) for his stirring rebuttal to Mexican President Calderon’s shameless (and shameful) address to Congress yesterday. This made me want to stand up and shout “Hurray!” [must-see video of McClintock delivering the smack-down to Calderon, and Congressional Dems]

Response to President Calderon House Chamber, Washington, D.C. May 20, 2010 M. Speaker: I rise to take strong exception to the speech of the President of Mexico while in this chamber today. The Mexican government has made it very clear for many years that it holds American sovereignty in contempt and President Calderon’s behavior as a guest of the Congress confirms and underscores this attitude. It is highly inappropriate for the President of Mexico to lecture Americans on American immigration policy, just as it would be for Americans to lecture Mexico on its laws. It is obvious that President Calderon...

Representative Tom McClintock (R-Granite Bay, CA) joined Republican Study Committee (RSC) Chairman Tom Price (R-GA), Congressman Rob Bishop (R-UT) and nine other Republican Members of Congress to officially launch the newly formed 10th Amendment Task Force, a project of the RSC. The Task Force will develop and promote proposals that aim to disperse power, decision-making, and money from Washington back to states, local governments, and individuals. The Task Force was created in response to the concentration of power and the one-size-fits-all solutions from Washington. Representative McClintock made the following remarks at today’s press conference: “I believe that it can be...

On the Propositions: Prop. 13. Seismic Retrofits. YES: Earthquake proofing your house shouldn’t trigger a tax increase until you’re ready to sell. Any questions? Prop. 14. Distorted Primary. NO: This was the result of the corrupt deal for the tax increase engineered by Abel Maldonado that included this measure to by-pass party primaries in a manner Maldonado believed would enhance his future election prospects. Instead of voters of each party putting their best candidate forward, this jerry-rigged system is designed to disguise the difference between the parties and force those pesky third parties off the general election ballot entirely. Prop....

Wow, Tom lets rip on Meg. And check out his radio ad for Steve Poisner as well. I know a bit about Poisner, and Tom endorsing and doing this string defense of him makes me feel a lot better about the crap that Meg has been smearing Poisner with.

Last December, when President Obama launched his second escalation of the Afghan war, he did so with the unflinching support of the Republicans, the right, and neoconservativies. But a small group of conservatives, libertarians and assorted contrarians on the right has opposed the war, and yesterday I journeyed to the Cato Institute to find out whether that nucleus of anti-war opposition is significant or not. The answer: maybe, but probably not. The Cato conference was entitled "Escalate or Withdraw? Conservatives and the War in Afghanistan," and it brought together several ultra conservative members of Congress: Tom McClintock (R-CA); Dana Rohrabacher...

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner told the California Republican Party's convention in Santa Clara that he's the true conservative in the race while delivering his standard campaign speech with a few variations tonight. The insurance commissioner promised to cut sales, income, corporate and capital gains taxes and repeated his hard line on immigration, which he unveiled yesterday, saying he would deny state services to all illegal immigrants. Both Poizner and U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Granite Bay, who introduced him via video, said the gubernatorial candidate would uphold the party's principles in a period of self-examination by many in the party....

Conservative icon U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock endorsed Steve Poizner for Governor today. Since I am at the CRA Convention, and am posting via my Blackberry, I will include an excerpt from Poizner's press release... FROM THE RELEASE: Tom McClintock, the conservative standard-bearer in California and champion of Republican principles, today endorsed Steve Poizner for Governor. In making his endorsement, Rep. McClintock called Steve Poizner the "only conservative candidate" in the race and the only real reformer running for governor. "I trust Steve to restore Republican principles to California government," said Rep. McClintock. "Steve Poizner is the only conservative candidate in...

As the federal budget season heats up, some Placer County officials are grumbling that Republican Rep. Tom McClintock's ideological opposition to congressional earmarks puts their constituents at a disadvantage. "It's already hurt us," Supervisor F.C. "Rocky" Rockholm said in a recent interview. McClintock said he will not seek congressional earmarks – budget requests made outside of the budget process. "I've made it very clear that I will fight for our district through the normal appropriations process," he said.

WASHINGTON – Republican Rep. Tom McClintock says the federal government has wasted enough money subsidizing solar power, calculating that it would take 22,000 acres of solid solar panels to duplicate the energy from a single nuclear plant. "This is an industry that exists solely off the dole, by the dole, and for the dole," McClintock said in a speech on the House floor last month. Two weeks later, he proclaimed that Congress was "disconnected from reality" as he accused environmentalists of producing a water crisis in his home state of California "for the enjoyment and prosperity of the Delta smelt."

Comments by Rep. Tom McClintock: November 19, 2009 11:10 AM House Chamber Remarks, Washington D.C. M. Speaker: The unfolding scandal of phony or inflated job claims from the so-called stimulus bill should shock the conscience of the nation and permanently stain the reputation of the 111th Congress and this president. But it gets even worse if we take them at their word. As of this morning, the administration claims that in my 4th Congressional District of California, the brain trust at the Treasury Department has spent $182 million to save or create all of 168 jobs. That’s $1.1 million per...

A GOP 'clarifying moment' in Calif. primary The conservative challenging GOP establishment-backed candidate Carly Fiorina in the 2010 Republican U.S. Senate primary in California says his campaign is putting the lie to the notion that the Party needs a moderate, self-funded businesswoman to defeat incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer. California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore says he is not surprised or bothered that Carly Fiorina gained the backing of eight Republican U.S. senators last week in Washington. DeVore notes that he has been endorsed by 60 percent of California's elected Republican officials, including Congressman Tom McClintock -- people that can actually vote for...
