Calling all shooters out there. I am right handed, and formerly an expert shot. I was in the Marine Corps, and prior to that I was a competitive shooter with 22. caliber rifles. However, a strange thing happened to me. I was right-eye dominate - now I am left eye dominate. I think this happened when I came down with Bells Palsy -that is paralysis of the 7th crainial nerve. For about 8 weeks I could not blink my right eyelid. After that, my vision went from 20/20 to something much worse. Soon I began to have headaches and my...

FORWARD OPERATING BASE BERNSTEIN, TUZ — Everyone was shooting, but no one was hurt when the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police, the Sons of Iraq and Coalition forces fired AK-47s, M4 carbines, and Glock 9mm pistols together in a friendly shooting tournament here, April 19. The event, hosted by Company A, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, helped the four groups strengthen relationships. “This is a lot of fun,” said Pfc. Devin Nehring, a Co. A. “Shooting the AK-47 was really exciting, and they (the IA) have one guy out there who’s cash money – he’s...

SAN DIEGO — Hope is the political message of the moment, courtesy of President Barack Obama. Tell that to Lincoln High School students Jennifer Astudillo, Sakeenah Shabazz and Alex Velarde, a trio of increasingly polished political activists. Sakeenah, 16, said hope isn't part of her political equation. “Always go in prepared for the worst, not with your hopes up,” she said. What they've displayed instead is persistence, as they've led a group of high school students in persuading the San Diego Unified School District board to shelve campus air-rifle marksmanship programs. The board confirmed the decision Tuesday, although members eased...

Gun sellers have been buzzing with activity lately as people have been stocking up in anticipation of what our new president might try to do to their right to own guns. One wag even named Obama Gun salesman of the year. (Dang, I wish I had thought of that.) Mr. Obama generated a great deal of anxiety as he tried to convince gun owners to believe what he said not what he did. Anyway, there were a lot of new guns under the Christmas tree last year. And if you got a new rifle, or even if you've had one...

In his living room, Jonathan Schiefla felt the bullet hit his leg. The family cat, on the window sill, flew with the broken glass. Schiefla told his wife to hit the floor. In the distance, gunshots -- target practice south of their Coopersville home -- kept going off. He called 911, while wife Danyle kept pressure on his wound until rescuers arrived. "It's something you don't expect to happen, being on your living-room floor watching television," he said Wednesday. "I'm just glad our little boy wasn't around." Ottawa County sheriff's deputies identified four people -- two men, two women, ages...

BESMAYA — The Iraqi Army’s Presidential Brigade turned over their older AK-47 model rifles for newer and more accurate M-16s at Besmaya Range Complex here, Feb. 5. The weapons were issued using the biometrics system, which ties each Soldier’s photograph, fingerprint, voice, retinal scan and name to the weapon they receive for accountability. After receiving the weapons, the Soldiers received training from Besmaya’s staff. The training is broken up into three days. The first day, the Soldiers are taught basic marksmanship instruction, which includes disassembly and assembly, care and maintenance, body position, and trigger squeeze. The second and third days...

Courtesy of the NRA, the Winchester Canyon Gun Club has a grant for our collegiate shooting program. I would like your suggestions as to how best to spend the $1500 with they have been kind enough to share with us. Over the last two years I have hosted 5 events at our club, including rifle, pistol and shotgun marksmanship familiarization and training. Now it is time to buy hardware. My first thought is to teach pistol marksmanship. One, the kids like shooting pistols. Two, I enjoy teaching pistol marksmanship and we have a few members who teach it even better...

CAMP HABBANIYAH, Iraq (Dec. 21, 2005) -- Marines deployed on a combat tour to Iraq find many different ways to relax and spend their free time. They play video games, watch movies, read books and even take online college courses. One Marine, though, uses his free time to make a direct impact oh the mission to turn Iraq over to a stable government capable of protecting its citizens. Cpl. Russell R. Hall, a wire man assigned to a six-man communications detachment with the 2nd Marine Division Training Center here, spends his free time ‘instructing the instructors’ as members of the...

Steady. Breathe out. Relax. Pull. Ping. Riflery is not a visually compelling sport. That's clear by the number of seats available to spectators at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center rifle range. And many times even those 12 chairs aren't filled. It's also a tough sport to capture on film. Pulling the trigger is such a smooth and slow motion you barely notice it even when you're zoomed in pretty tight. Also, the shooters lie, stand or kneel in basically one position for extended periods of time. And you obviously can't stand in front of the shooters to catch...

Fairbanks, Alaska -- Matt Emmons slowly lifted a bullet from the box and inserted it into the chamber of his .22-caliber rifle.

He let out a deep sigh, and his torso settled into his hip joints, visibly shrinking him. His eyelids sank over dark blue eyes as if he was about to fall asleep. His eyes widened, he peered at the target 50 feet away, blinked fast three times, and squeezed the trigger.

WASHINGTON -- The government has cut training for federal air marshal applicants and put new hires on flights without requiring the advanced marksmanship skills the program used to demand, USA TODAY has learned.

''The use of firearms aboard a U.S. aircraft must be limited to those thoroughly trained members of law enforcement,'' he said.
