What can a Big Mac tell us about currency rates? As it turns out, quite a lot.The Big Mac Index, created by The Economist in 1986, started out as a simple tool to make currency theory more digestible. Now, it’s a widely-known measure in popular economics to assess and compare currency valuations. In short, the Big Mac index compares the purchasing power parity (PPP) of currencies using the price of a Big Mac in the U.S. as the benchmark. It shows how much a Big Mac costs in various countries compared to the U.S., but it also works as a way...

The "fight for 15" -- a minimum wage of $15 an hour -- has been a rallying cry on the left for a while now, and they've succeeded in implementing it in various blue states. And look what's -- so utterly predictably -- happening: Its workers were the first to stage rallies demanding a minimum wage of $15 an hour. Then, they pressed for changes in the way national restaurant chains set their work schedules. Now, they are asking the City Council to shield them from being fired without a valid reason. That protection, the sort of job security...

McDonald's stock has hit new highs in recent days, despite fast-food industry woes. Why? Mickey-D's is replacing 2,500 human workers with digital kiosks this year. Way to go, minimum-wage advocates! Working from the absurd idea that if higher wages are good for individual workers, it must be socially beneficial to have government order all employers to pay their workers more, progressives and other leftists have had extraordinary success in forcing small businesses to pay higher minimum wages. Big Mac's stock is up 27% this year. Why? Pushed by concerns over a rising minimum wage, the fast-food chain is replacing human...

Massachusetts is in the midst of debating the Fight for 15, with proposals on the table to raise the minimum wage that high at least for a few industries including big box stores and fast food outlets. That would have a serious impact on businesses such as McDonald’s, which hires a lot of younger workers looking for their first entries on their resumes, particularly if they don’t have a secondary school education. While we’re on the subject, if you happen to be in the Boston area be sure to stop by one McDonald’s where you can meet their new...

The pictures tell an interesting story. All over Europa Muslims are protesting the war in Gaza. At the fringes are anti-Israeli and antisemitic slogans and cartoons. But in Norway this extreme Islamist right is echoed in the official press: antisemitic slurs and cartoons are printed in Norway's established newspapers. It is hard to believe. On Thursday the 8th of January a rally was held in front of Norway's Parliament building. A few hundred souls protected by 200 police in full riot gear. Many participants were elderly people bussed in from far away. Maybe they didn't know what was in store....

McDonald's, home of kids' Happy Meals and the Big Mac, has been cited by a boycott campaign for sponsoring conferences at which homosexuals are trained to be activists in advancing their own sexual preferences, according to the American Family Association. The AFA has launched a boycott campaign of the company for an anti-family agenda and public condemnation of traditional family supporters as being motivated by "hate." The AFA's petition and other outreaches have been assembled at the website BoycottMcDonalds.com. Now there's more reason for members and supporters of traditional families to be upset with the fast-food chain. "McDonald's does it...

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Quick. Name each of the Ten Commandments. OK. Now name the ingredients in a Big Mac hamburger sold at McDonald's. According to a new survey, the Big Mac wins the memory contest. In truth, the Big Mac has advantages. There are only seven ingredients to remember, and they have a catchy jingle behind them. McDonald's Corp. has poured enough money into commercials that the decades-old jingle remains familiar today. The survey of 1,000 Americans, by Kelton Research, was undertaken to help promote the new animated movie "The Ten Commandments," which will open on 700 screens nationwide Oct....

Boadicea may have had her chips on site of McDonald's By Nick Britten (Filed: 25/05/2006) Archaeologists believe they may have found the final battle site for the warrior queen Boadicea - on the site of a McDonald's restaurant. Having spent her life in fierce resistance to one empire - the Romans - her last stand is thought to have been overshadowed by another one, this time corporate. Having found ancient artefacts where new houses and flats are due to be built, experts have now asked the local authority to allow a full excavation of the area. Little is known about...

In between promoting mega-lunatic conspiracies theories about how supposedly the Bush Administration itself knocked down the WTC on 9/11 to make the poor al-Qaeda terrorists look bad, one of the biggest bugs up the Left's bonnet is McDonald's. They love to picket the Mac outfit and declare anti-McDonald's Days. NutWatch Leftists who have never fasted for a day in their lives love to insist that shutting down fast food joints will help alleviate world hunger. The non sequitur is the main tool of leftist analysis. Their French comrades-in-sissy-berets consider McDonald's to be a bigger threat to civilization than al-Qaeda. I...

Many lawyers might like to believe that the American legal system is known internationally for the landmark deci¬sions studied in law school: Marbury v. Madison, Brown v. Board of Education, Miranda, or any of the other semi¬nal cases. Those more cynical might acknowledge that the Klaus von Bulow drama, the OJ. Simpson case, or the Martha Stewart affair have gotten more public attention. So when we travel abroad and talk to foreign lawyers, expecting them to be impressed that we are representatives of the legal system that brought the world Roe v. Wade or at least brought the Menendez brothers...
