In principle, it is permissible to work at a food outlet, that is strictly Halaal. If the food outlet is not strictly Halaal, then generally it is not permissible to work there.

In order to ascertain if food outlet is strictly Halaal, the following guidelines may be adopted:

1. The manager of the outlet must be a Muslim who also conforms to the standard of an Aadil person as stipulated by the Fuqahaa. In brief, an Aadil Muslim is he who is sensitive to his religion by practising on it. He does not deliberately violate the laws of the Shari’ah.

2. The person is well versed on the Shari’ah laws of Halaal and Haraam. If such a person informs the food is Halaal and there is no sound reason to doubt his information, then his information of Halaal may be accepted.

The Shar’ee ruling of working at McDonalds should be understood in the light of the abovementioned principles.

Tell all this to the Muslims I worked with at Pizza Hut last summer. These "pious" muslim men would stop in the middle of their shift to go to the back of the store and pray, claiming it is their religious right.

When they came back, they would often eat a pepperoni pizza and gawk at the women walking by with us white guys.

All yummy. I would much rather have any of these than McDonald's crap, though I was the original poster. Jews in the middle east and Arab Christians would say the same. Pork was never a big item in the middle east, not a good climate for raising pigs. And in the absence of modern methods, pork is really unwholesome. The natural diet of pigs is filth.

The point is that some poor sap of a Muslim in Australia (click on the link to see the original question, it's from Australia), probably an Indonesian or something else Oceanian rather than a middle easterner, can't get any other than burger flipper and is worried about it.

By the way, compare with Jews. The dietary laws are similar, but Jews say that it only applies to Jews. Jews don't say infidels go directly to Hell, do not collect $200. So an Orthodox Jew could be a McDonald's burger flipper in the unlikely event that he couldn't get anything else.
