WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson called on the Big Apple Thursday to scrap its “sanctuary” city status if it wants federal money to help house thousands of migrants pouring into the city. In an exclusive and wide-ranging interview with The Post, the Louisiana Republican’s first with a major publication since seizing the gavel, Johnson said he was “certain” his fellow GOP lawmakers will stipulate a rollback of policies that restrict local police cooperation with federal immigration officials to deport migrants accused of serious crimes. “I’m certain that will be one of our proposals, and it should,” the 51-year-old said....

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said on Sunday that Republicans have no choice but to back the short-term funding proposal. In an interview on CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” McCaul stressed the importance of passing aid for our foreign allies, which will not be feasible if the government shuts down. “We’re gonna have to. I mean, there’s no choice here,” McCaul said when asked whether Republicans can pass the continuing resolution (CR) proposal that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) unveiled Saturday.

A federal appeals court has set a mid-January deadline for the Louisiana state legislature to draw up a new congressional map, which comes in a long-running legal dispute that included a lower court ruling that found the current map likely unfairly diluted the power of black voters. A three-judge panel in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued its order on Nov. 10, requiring the state legislature to pass a new map by Jan. 15, 2024. The appeals court's order notes that, if the state legislature fails to adopt a new map by the deadline, then the lower court should...

Earlier today, I wrote an article expressing “cautious optimism” on the election of the new Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson. Johnson, a Southern Baptist, is being heralded by many conservatives as “the most conservative” speaker in U.S. History. Upon further research, it appears the caution in that “cautious optimism” is more than warranted. Here’s more of what we found. Mike Johnson served as a trustee for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) for eight years, from 2004 to 2012. Over the years, the ERLC has been instrumental in killing legislation that...

With many eyes focused on the 2024 presidential election, issues of election integrity are again coming to the forefront of the national conversation, as they should. Without fair, honest, and secure elections, we can’t sustain our democratic republic. Because the Framers of our Constitution placed primary responsibility on the states to administer and set out the rules and procedures that apply in our elections, that’s where most battles over election integrity have been—and will continue to be—fought. Fortunately, the citizens of many states, their legislators, and even judges who hear challenges to recent commonsense election reforms all are starting to...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans chose Rep. Mike Johnson as their latest nominee for House speaker late Tuesday, hours after an earlier pick, Rep. Tom Emmer, abruptly withdrew in the face of opposition from Donald Trump and hardline GOP lawmakers. Johnson of Louisiana, a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, becomes the fourth Republican nominee after Emmer and the others fell short in what has become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy's ouster as GOP factions jockey for power. Refusing to unify, far-right members won’t accept a more traditional speaker and moderate conservatives don’t want...
