Dale Carlsen was about 24 years old and had been merely selling mattresses, but finally Dale got frustrated and went into the biz for himself. He was coming up on having to make a payment on the loan for his new, tiny mattress company. He didn't have much money, and this loan was at over 20% interest, ok? Worse was that Dale had chosen the location of his first mattress store in gritty South Sacramento, near Sac State, alongside some train tracks, next to a flea market. He'd thought the flea market foot traffic would bring customers, but in fact...

Clear Channel will flip the simulcast switch tomorrow (December 1), creating "FM News/Talk 92.5 and AM 1530 KFBK." The station is about to turn 90 years old on February 2, and in the 1980s it was the incubator for the Rush Limbaugh talk show. Its current lineup includes Limbaugh, Tom Sullivan, Kitty O'Neal, Amy Lewis, Ed Crane, John McGinness and Kelly Brothers. The station losing out is modern AC "My 92.5" KGBY. Clear Channel market manager Jeff Holden says adding an FM signal "will give a younger audience access to one of the most influential stations in not only Sacramento,...

FIRED OVER IRAQ SUPPORT?Groups, SF Host Call Attention To Possible Sacto Funny Business Has ongoing support for America's involvement in Iraq cost a Sacramento talker his job? After the termination of longtime conservative KFBK / Sacramento host Mark Williams (top right photo), that's what several political groups, as well as a prominent San Francisco talker, seem to be suggesting. Though "budget cuts" were originally cited as the reason for his departure, Williams was quickly replaced by an outspoken liberal, sparking suspicions about the real motivations behind the move. Because his replacement is said to be adamantly opposed to American actions...

**snip**Mark Williams fallout: The decision by KFBK (1530 AM) to oust conservative talk-show host Mark Williams in favor of moderate Bruce Maiman has angered many of Williams' fans. Griffin & Reed Eye Care, which pays for on-air media endorsements (including Williams') for its lasik eye surgery, has pulled all advertisements from KFBK. "Our relationship with the personalities that help us with our advertising is something we take very seriously," writes Brad Mitchell, Griffin & Reed's chief operating officer, in an e-mail. "… I'm sure the absence of our money on KFBK won't be felt too much, but hopefully the position will."...
  • Mark Williams out at KFBK

Nothing if not controversial, Mark Williams figured to have plenty to say Wednesday about the cancellation, effective immediately, of his weeknight conservative talk-radio show on KFBK (1530 AM). Turns out, though, the talker who made a name nationally on cable TV news shows for his inflammatory opinions on immigration and terrorism was mostly gracious in discussing his parting with KFBK after five years. Williams produced solid numbers for KFBK, Sacramento's top-rated station, but his contract and added bonuses, called "talent fees," made him expensive for the station to keep, sources say. He will be replaced on an interim basis by...

Conservative talkers taking radio shows on road to IraqPublic support for the war in Iraq is plummeting at home and overseas, military recruiters aren't making their quotas, and U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians are being killed every day by insurgents. But enough of the bad news, say a group of six conservative talk-show hosts led by San Francisco's Melanie Morgan. They're headed to Iraq on Friday for a "Truth Tour" -- a seven-day trip designed to show that what's happening on the ground in Iraq isn't as dire as what's being beamed across the globe on network news programs and...

I was just wondering if anyone has tickets to see Limbaugh live at the KFBK 80th Annivesary celebration on Friday. I wish I could go - not that I have ever been to Sacramento, or even listened to KFBK - but I'd love to see Rush do a live speech. It would be great if you guys could give reports and post pictures for all to enjoy.
