The standard wisdom is this presidential election, like most, is about the incumbent; if true, John Kerry will be sworn into office next Jan. 20. President Bush is in a politically fragile situation, with little prospect of those fundamentals improving. This is reflected in this week's Wall Street Journal/NBC News national poll1, where a clear plurality of Americans believe America is headed in the wrong direction, lack confidence on the economy and Iraq and believe the country can do better than George W. Bush in the White House.
