Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors, CNET News.com has learned. Apple has used IBM's PowerPC processors since 1994, but will begin a phased transition to Intel's chips, sources familiar with the situation said. Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007, sources said. The announcement is expected Monday at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, at which Chief Executive Steve Jobs is giving the keynote speech. The...

New Intel CEO Paul Otellini has flashed a level of marketing savvy unseen with his predecessor by making the unusual suggestion that consumers buy Apple's Mac computers if they wish to avoid immediate security risks. Confused? You're not alone. Otellini had attendees of a Wall Street Journal technology conference in Carlsbad, California scratching their silicon this week, as they puzzled through his pro-Mac statements. The paper recounts the episode as follows; Pressed about security by (a reporter), Mr Otellini had a startling confession: He spends an hour a weekend removing spyware from his daughter's computer. And when further pressed about...

Talks between chipmaker Intel Corp. and Apple Computer have been speculated on for many years – probably as much as the recurring Apple/Sony, Apple/Disney merger/buyout scenario. But with Apple’s move into new markets like the iPod, analysts are not so quick to dismiss the rumored talks this time. “While nobody can predict what Apple would do, it wouldn’t surprise me if discussions are going on between the two companies for something other than computers,” Jupiter Analyst, Joe Wilcox, told MacCentral. Technology Business Research analyst, Tim Deal agrees. “I am skeptical. But if there are [talks], then it is likely for...

Attacking US government policies on taxes, immigration and Internet access, Intel Corp chief executive Craig Barrett warned that the United States could be left behind when technology companies decide where to make their next big capital investments. With less than two weeks left as CEO of the world's largest chip maker, the outspoken proponent of free trade and low corporate taxes said in an interview that Intel could save as much as $1 billion in taxes over 10 years by building its next factory outside of the United States, in a country such as Malaysia. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. has been in talks that could lead to a decision soon to use Intel Corp. chips in its Macintosh computer line, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The report, citing two industry executives with knowledge of recent discussions between the companies, said Apple will agree to use Intel chips. Neither company would confirm the report and an Apple spokeswoman told the Journal she would characterize it as "rumor and speculation." It was unclear whether such a move would signal a large-scale shift away from chips made by IBM, Apple's longtime supplier,...

In 1987, after he was exonerated of corruption charges, former Secretary of Labor Raymond Donovan issued the classic plea of the wronged man: "Which office do I go to get my reputation back?" Whichever office it is, Ahmad Chalabi may want to apply there as well. The leader of the Iraqi National Congress has been the most unfairly maligned man on the planet in recent years. If you believe what you read, Chalabi is a con man, a crook and, depending on which day of the week it is, either an American or Iranian stooge. The most damning charge is...

THE head of Iran's hardline judiciary has ordered police and prosecutors to stop forcing suspects to confess, after comparing their treatment of detainees in some cases to US soldiers' abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The order from Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahrudi, carried by official media, said police and the judicial apparatus should exercise more caution in issuing summons and refrain from "intimidation, mental or physical pressure" during interrogations. Quoted in Iranian newspapers today, he also said the overzealous enforcement of the Islamic republic's strict dress code was counter-productive. "Sometimes they do some things like put a bag over...

Larry Franklin, 58, turned himself in on Wednesday, FBI spokesperson Debra Weierman said. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance in US district court in Virginia later in the day, Weierman said. Franklin, who specialised on Iran and Middle Eastern affairs, allegedly gave the information to two people not entitled to receive it at a meeting in June 2003. The people at the lunch were employees of the American Israel public affairs...

TONY EASTLEY: There are fears Israel may be preparing to bomb Iran's nuclear sites. Israel's Defence Minister has already speculated about a strike on Iran's underground atomic facilities, saying Israel would try to minimise civilian casualties. Now the United States Congress is about to approve the sale of 100 guided bunker-buster bombs to the Israeli military. The bombs can destroy targets 30 metres underground. But one of the Israeli pilots who bombed Iraq's nuclear reactor in 1981 has told AM that knocking out Iran's atomic program could prove beyond even Israel's capabilities. Middle East Correspondent Mark Willacy reports from Jerusalem....

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A British engineer has collected a $10,000 (5,200 pounds) bounty for turning in his near-mint copy of a famous forty-year-old electronics magazine, but not before irking university librarians who rushed to secure their copies from thieves. Intel this month posted a reward for a copy of the April 1965 issue of Electronics, in which company co-founder Gordon Moore accurately forecast years of exponential improvements in computer chip performance. Later dubbed Moore's Law, the forecast has become gospel for $200 billion chip industry. News of the reward reached Surrey, England, where an engineer named David Clark found...

The promise comes from none other than CEO Kevin Rollins, and is probably just another indication that Dell is twisting and turning like a twisty turny thing with the mighty Intel or is hanging out for a better deal with AMD. Rollins comments were made at a press conference that took place at the conclusion of Dell's annual analysts' meeting for Wall Street and the news media....

The conclusions of last week's report by the U.S. presidential commission assessing the intelligence failures of the Iraq war make clear that the United States dramatically overestimated Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction capabilities. American intelligence, said the commission, led by Judge Laurence Silberman and former Sen. Chuck Robb, was "dead wrong in almost all of its pre-war judgments about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction." Critics of Bush administration's foreign policy at home and abroad may hope that this extraordinary verdict will limit future U.S. military operations against other rogue regimes, given the risk of a similar, costly mistake. In...
