A massive homeless encampment in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, known as the "Zone," raises eyebrows as the shelter's population swells to more than 900 people. The Zone is located on 9th Avenue, Jackson Street, 13th Avenue, and Jefferson Street in Phoenix, down the street from the Arizona State Capitol complex. Vice News points out, "the camp more than doubling in size over two years may be a testament to how bad Phoenix's housing crisis has become." "People say, 'Are you surprised?' And I say, 'No, not really, because all of the housing forces in Phoenix and Maricopa County have been working...

California's governor proposed a plan on Thursday to force homeless people with severe mental health and addiction disorders into treatment. The proposal by Gov. Gavin Newsom would require all counties in California to set up a mental health branch in civil court to assist people in need of help but who won't accept services. The state would require counties to provide comprehensive treatment to those suffering from debilitating psychosis and people would be obligated to accept the care. Some advocates for the homeless have objected to forced care, but Newsom told the San Francisco Chronicle it is past time to...

Casar will be among the most progressive members of Congress ever to serve from Texas. During his tenure on the City Council, he was best known for supporting cuts to the police department and his fight against the encampment bans that had translated into homeless citizens living in tents in public parks and under Interstate 35 bridges. He had the backing of prominent progressives like U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but also the support of prominent locals like Austin Mayor Steve Adler and former state Sen. Wendy Davis. Rodriguez, seen as his most competitive rival, warned...

Maryland state bill would prevent police from removing homeless camps from public property Some of the nation's most liberal cities are cracking down on their homeless populations. But Maryland may soon ban police from removing homeless people from public property. A Democratic-backed bill in the Maryland statehouse would prevent police from enforcing Failure to Obey Lawful Orders laws, which critics say would permit homeless camps, known as "tent cities," on public property. The sponsor of the bill, Democratic delegate Sheila Ruth, said in a committee hearing that these tent cities are not harmful or dangerous to communities. "We shouldn't be...

Following a string of violent crimes on the New York subway system in recent weeks, including a knife attack on Feb. 17 in broad daylight, freshly minted New York Mayor Eric Adams is making an aggressive push to try to remove homeless people, announcing a plan to start barring people from sleeping on trains or riding the same lines all night. “People tell me about their fear of using the system and we are going to ensure that fear is not New York’s reality,” Adams said. “The system is not made to be housing,” Adams said Friday at a press...

Landlords and residents in California’s Bay Area are being asked to take in vagrants as homelessness continues to spiral out of control. Several nonprofits and a mayor in the area are prodding residents and landlords to take in one of the nearly 30,000 homeless individuals in the five-county area, the Mercury News reports. Existing affordable housing developments do not have adequate room to accommodate the homeless population.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — As the Bay Area continues to struggle under the weight of its homelessness crisis, officials and nonprofits are asking local residents to do more than hand out meals or donate spare change. They’re asking them to open up their homes. Nearly 30,000 people are unhoused in the five-county Bay Area, and there isn’t nearly enough room in the region’s existing affordable housing developments. To fill the gaps, service providers increasingly are recruiting private landlords to take in homeless tenants. Some property owners are renting out entire units in exchange for agreements that the government or a...

Homeless encampments in Austin, Texas, were legalized in 2021, but the people of this fast-growing tech mecca have had second and third thoughts about what looked like a good idea on paper but turned out to be an eyesore under bridges. Austin politicos have just finished removing virtually all remaining visible homeless camps. Other cities are taking notice. The journey to this current outcome was far from a straight path. Put bluntly, it was a dizzying display of waffling “wokeness.” In 2019, the city council of Austin had the bright idea to legalize homeless camps. Unfortunately, they took the vote...

See Video at the link. "Allowing people to live outside and defecate outside in public places and use drugs outside in front of our children, is both the cause and a symptom of growing disorder and chaos. It's the degradation of what holds us together as a civilization."

A Los Angeles-area homeless encampment near the venue slated to host Super Bowl LVI was cleared out Tuesday after reports of people setting fires in the area. The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, said the encampment near SoFi Stadium in Inglewood needed to be cleared because of a fire safety issue. The venue will host the NFL's annual championship affair on Feb. 13. "Caltrans’ responsibility is to ensure the safety of the traveling public and to protect and maintain California’s highway infrastructure," a Caltrans statement said. "The department is coordinating with local partners to provide outreach and support including...

Liel Leibovitz, a senior writer for Tablet Magazine and host of the Unorthodox podcast, told The Epoch Times that in the last few years he has found himself, “politically homeless,” falling out with his circle of people because he challenged their views. Leibovitz is the author of the popular Tablet essay on this topic, “The Turn: When I saw the left give up everything I believe in, I changed politically. You can, too.” “The turn is the moment when you kind of begin to understand, a little bit like that movie The Matrix, that everything you assumed was the very...

Police in Florida have arrested a man they described as a “homeless drifter” in the stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy whose body was found near an interstate overpass. Semmie Lee Williams, 39, was arrested Wednesday in Miami and charged with first degree murder in the death of Ryan Rogers. “He appears to be a homeless drifter spending most of his time in the streets of Miami,” Palm Beach Gardens Chief of Police Clinton Shannon said of Williams at a press conference Thursday. Ryan, a high school freshman, went missing on Nov. 15, having been last seen leaving his home...

Progressives defend their approach as compassionate. Not everybody who is homeless is an addict, they say. Many are just down on their luck. Others turn to drugs after living on the street. What they need is our help. We should not ask people living in homeless encampments to go somewhere else. Homeless shelters are often more dangerous than living on the street. We should provide the people living in tents with money, food, clean needles, and whatever else they need to stay alive and comfortable. And we should provide everyone with their own apartment unit if that’s what they want....

Former New York Mets star Lenny Dykstra blasted left-wing, anti-gun activist David Hogg Sunday after the youngster tweeted that he is chagrined over the homelessness problem in Cambridge, Massachusetts, home of Harvard University. Hogg, who has become a left-wing hero for his constant woke posts on Twitter, won himself a place at prestigious Harvard even though at 1270, his SAT scores wouldn’t seem to merit his inclusion there — Harvard usually doesn’t even consider applicants unless they have a 1460 SAT or higher. And on Sunday, the anti-gun teen posted a tweet about how he often sees homeless people as...
