Austin Thinks Again

Homeless encampments in Austin, Texas, were legalized in 2021, but the people of this fast-growing tech mecca have had second and third thoughts about what looked like a good idea on paper but turned out to be an eyesore under bridges.

Austin politicos have just finished removing virtually all remaining visible homeless camps. Other cities are taking notice.

The journey to this current outcome was far from a straight path.

Put bluntly, it was a dizzying display of waffling “wokeness.” In 2019, the city council of Austin had the bright idea to legalize homeless camps. Unfortunately, they took the vote in the middle of the night -- 2:00 am to be exact -- when virtually all citizen stakeholders were asleep.

A year later, the same council voted to defund the city’s police budget by more than a third.

These decisions caused wholesale disaster and immediate negative consequences for public safety. Moreover, they led to even more chaos, violence, and, recently, a backlash from some grassroots groups actively rejecting the council’s dangerous progressive agenda.

Like other cities across the nation, Austin residents had the chance to move in favor of restoring order as they voted on Proposition A to “re-fund” and restaff the police. This ballot measure came a year after they voted on another referendum to curb the rampant homeless crises created by that first middle-of-the-night council vote.

But unlike other cities, Austin voted down the measure in early November.

After Decision No. 1 by the city council, homelessness in Austin exploded as homeless people from other cities migrated into the state capitol to live off the heavily-subsidized fat of the land.

That’s a well done article. It’s a shame the people of Austin double down on stupid wokeism. They let these Marxists hold votes at 2:00AM and then still re-elect them. They deserve each other and the misery they create for themselves.

I used to go to a big conference in Austin each year. It moved to San Antonio and now Dallas. As a woman, I felt so unsafe in Austin. Homeless were right at the Convention Center popping in broad daylight on the sidewalk. Saw a man with a live chicken on his head harassing teenage girls at the Austin mall exit. I called 911 and watched the man’s behavior and girls get to safety. Stopped gping even as a visitor to other areas in Austin. Austin is not just weird. It is crazy. Houston with their woke mayor is not far behind.

Can’t blame this on the DA. Austin voters did this just like SF, LA, Portland, Seattle, Denver, Baltimore, NY and several others. The citizens do this to themselves over and over again. Don’t feel sorry for them. They could fix this if they wanted it fixed. Same thing for School Boards. The parents voted them in. If they wanted to fix things, they would. The big problem for Texas is that these nut jobs move to Texas from the messes they’ve made and then do the same thing all over again.

It was once a beautiful, if quirky, city.
Hill Country

Last year I was shocked to see ‘homeless cities’ close to suburban subdivisions and elementary schools.....
...it’s not just downtown

FTA WRT the homeless encampments: As a result, the city spent upwards of $70 million last fiscal year to deal with all related problems, and as if that wasn’t enough, the federal government poured in another $200 million

Right there is the reason!!!
$200,000,000 of federal money! The local pols saw that windfall just sitting there with a price tag of $70,000,000...saw a profit of $130,000,000 and bought it!

Aaaaand...it's gone!

"Austin Thinks Again"

Anyone notice the disturbing oxymoron? Living only an hour away means we can smell the wretched stink when the wind blows. I say build the wall starting with Austin.

Your tag line. What a shame. Thank you for giving it a go.

You are much like good people in our military were. I say “were” because they are being drummed out.

We will not win another war. The best we can probably hope for is a draw but with a major adversary loss is more likely.

The People’s Socialist Kakistocracy of Austin apparatchiks may have finally removed most (but not all) of the homeless/drug camps, but now the Austin population has to boil water for some unspecified amount of time.

Austin’s Ullrich treatment plant failed to meet the minimum treatment technique requirements for the month of February 2022. Specifically, the treatment system had a multiple barrier failure treatment technique violation (CFE >1.0 NTU and IFE >2.0 NTU) and combined filter effluent turbidity (CFE) readings above 5.0 NTU. Due to the nature and severity of this violation, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required Austin Water to issue a “boil water” notice.

Let’s hope Austin doesn’t have any “rolling blackouts” during this time.
