I need help with LOTR. Two friends and I were discussing the books and movies last weekend. Friend 1 observed that the relationship between Frodo and Sam (in the movies) had homosexual overtones. Friend 2 retorted that the relationship is based on the master/servant relationship of old England and that Friend 1 was looking at it through American eyes, where rugged individualism is more prized. I--caught in the middle--had to admit that I thought that Sean Astin overplayed Sam at times but was great overall. So, was Friend 1 right about the gay overtones, or was Friend 2's explanation correct?...

Oscar winning director Peter Jackson says it will be at least three years before he shoots The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit. Jackson this weekend took a break from his busy schedule filming King Kong in Auckland, stopping by Sydney's Powerhouse Museum to check out the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) exhibition. On Saturday, the very private director will give a talk to fans about his films at the State Theatre. A slimmed-down Jackson, who arrived in Sydney on Friday, was asked how long it would be before he started production on The Hobbit. "Three or four years...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. The famous skeleton from Indonesia nicknamed the "Hobbit" does not belong to a modern human pygmy with a brain disease, as some scientists argue. That is the main finding of a detailed examination of the creature's braincase, published in Science. The authors say their study of the Hobbit's brain supports the idea it is a new, dwarf species of human. However, others contend the report does little to quash their theory it was actually a small, diseased person. The remains of the small hominid from the Indonesian island of Flores were...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. Peter Jackson´s JRR Tolkien-inspired film trilogy Lord of the Rings features enormous eagles swooping down to rescue Sam and Frodo from a desolate New Zealand landscape masquerading as Mordor. The image of giant eagles flying around New Zealand, while fanciful, is not so far-fetched as it might appear. New genetic data published in the freely-available online journal PLoS Biology this week from researchers at Oxford and Canterbury Universities shed new light on the evolution of the extinct giant eagle that once ruled the skies in New Zealand. Before human settlement 700...

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a very talented writer, is famous for having created such a literary genre as fantasy. All his books are real masterpieces, and many having read them once, want to read them again and again. Warm-hearted and exciting adventure stories, involving people, elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, wizards, and, of course, hobbits are in Tolkien’s accounts. But not only fantastic beings were concocted by him. Both philologist and professor at Oxford University, he knew many ancient and modern languages. Thus, a new world – Middle-earth, along with its geography, its history, and several languages appeared. The history of...

Gollum gets a health check LONDON (Reuters) - Gollum, the creepy character in "Lord of the Rings" with the dual personality and eerie voice, suffered from a schizoid personality disorder, according to a group of medical students. Thirty students at University College London were asked to explain the odd behaviour the character displayed in the films based on the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy. The students noted his solitary habits, spiteful behaviour, odd interests, difficulty in forming friendships, emotional changeability, nervousness and paranoia. "He fulfils seven of the nine criteria for schizoid personality disorder, and, if we must label Gollum's problems, we...

New Line Entertainment released the definitive "Extended Edition" of The Return Of The King . Peter Jackson worked over a year to bring this out for the fans. New and extended scenes have brought the total running length to over 200 minutes. Plus extras on the supplemental discs.

I attended BNAT3 but did not try to make this one (thousands compete for barely 150 seats). The flavor of the festival has been forever changed by the 3 screenings of Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings movies (BNAT3, BNAT4, and BNAT5 respectively, with Mr. Jackson himself attending last year). This year they added slideshows and short clips from other films. It has become that much less of a film festival (celebrating films old and new) and is a step closer to the film previews seen at larger conventions (albeit I was glad to see more revivals listed and fewer...

Hobbit Sized Race of Humans Found. - Once upon a time, but not so long ago, on a tropical island midway between Asia and Australia, there lived a race of little people, whose adults stood just 3 1/2 feet tall. Despite their stature, they were mighty hunters. They made stone tools to spear giant rats, clubbed sleeping dragons and hunted the packs of pygmy elephants that roamed their "lost world."

IT was a friendship that thrived on a complex fantasy world, created in an English pub, that produced some of the most memorable literary characters ever written. Now a new film by a Scottish-based director will celebrate the real-life fellowship of two literary giants, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. CS Lewis: The Man Who Created Narnia aims to ride a wave of interest in Lewis that is anticipated to accompany the rel ease in 2005 of up to seven films based on his Narnia novels. ..... Norman Stone’s 54-minute drama, which starts shooting in Oxford this week, is a more...
