The first publicly funded school in the United States for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teen-agers opened in New York Monday as a handful of protesters rallied across the street. THERE WERE also demonstrations of support for the Harvey Milk High School. In front of the building, people cheered and held up banners such as “God made us Queer” on the first day of classes for the school named after a gay San Francisco politician assassinated in 1978. The school, which for 20 years was funded privately and had just two classes, is now bankrolled jointly by the city education...

PROTEST BATTLE OUTSIDE GAY HS September 9, 2003 -- A handful of demonstrators - most of them out-of-towners - showed up yesterday to protest the country's first stand-alone high school for gays, but they were drowned out by hundreds of supporters. Cops positioned the two groups on opposite sides of the street at Harvey Milk HS at 2 Astor Place, as it opened its doors to 72 students and seven teachers. "For those who say this school is not necessary, I would refer you to some of the slogans on the placards of the protesters," said City Council Speaker Gifford...

America's first publicly-funded school for gay and lesbian teenagers has opened its doors in New York. The first day for the 72 students was marked with noisy displays of support and opposition. Opponents staged a demonstration outside the Harvey Milk High School waving placards. One of them said: "Sodomy - it's to die for." One of the protesters said opening a school for gays was a retrograde step. He said: "We're going back to the point where blacks and whites will be wanting their own schools. It's absolutely insane." But a school supporter said all the pupils wanted to be...

Protestors and supporters squared off as the nation's first high school exclusively for gay students opened its doors in Manhattan Monday. Fifty students are attending the new Harvey Milk School in Greenwich Village, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls a safe haven for gay and lesbian students. As students showed up for their first day of classes, about a dozen protestors, some from as far away as Los Angeles and Topeka, Kansas, shouted and waved inflammatory signs condemning homosexuality. But they were outnumbered on the other side of the street, where hundreds rallied in support of the school and the students....

Protect Kids Tammy Bruce Thursday, July 31, 2003 In my book "The Death of Right and Wrong" I warn about the sexualization and targeting of children by the radical gay fringe. The announcement that a school in New York will open in September and be the first publicly run “gay high school” is a testament to that vile and loathsome agenda. Do not be cowed by arguments that if you’re against this you’re a “homophobe.” In fact, the unforgivable crime is to remain silent, allowing children to be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness, as we sit and watch...

NEW YORK — When news surfaced that Harvey Milk High School (search), a fully accredited public school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students, would expand its programs to become a fully-fledged high school next month, many education experts were surprised to learn that classrooms could be legally segregated based on sexual orientation.

FRN Columnists' Corner "Sex and the City" by JDMThat he joined the GOP to sneak into office notwithstanding, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has an apparent knack for stating the obvious. Such was the case last week when he noted, in support of the forthcoming Harvey Milk High School for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning -- or LGBTQ -- students, that "gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools." He's right, you know. Gays and lesbians do get picked on. But that's no reason to remove them from mainstream schools. The fact that said schools are...

A lawsuit has been filed in New York to stop the nation's first homosexual high school from opening in September. Harvey Milk School, a collaborative effort between The Hetrick-Martin Institute and the New York City Department of Education's Career Education Center Alternative High School Program, claims to be the nation's first accredited public high school designed to meet the needs of "gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning" (LGBTQ) youth.According to the New York Post, the school -- named after a homosexual San Francisco politician who was murdered in 1978 -- has operated for the past 20 years as a small...

Spending public money to give gay and lesbian teens their own school is illegal segregation and a violation of the city's education rules, said a lawsuit filed yesterday challenging the Harvey Milk High School. "Public funds should not be used to segregate city schools," state Sen. Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) said after filing the suit in Manhattan state Supreme Court with conservative legal group Liberty Counsel. The Milk program has existed for 19 years, but the city is spending $3.2 million to renovate 2 Astor Place to expand it into a full-fledged high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and "questioning"...

Using a rule prohibiting discrimination based on "sexual orientation," a group of New Yorkers filed suit yesterday challenging NYC's use of public funds to establish the first homosexuals-only high school in the Big Apple. As WorldNetDaily reported, the new Harvey Milk High School is undergoing a $3.2 million publicly funded renovation and will open this fall with 100 "gay" students. Democratic New York State Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. and a mother representing her four children, all of whom attend New York City schools, are the plaintiffs in the case, represented by attorneys from the Liberty Counsel. According to a statement...

August 11, 2003 -- He's the namesake of the city's new gay high school - but slain civil-rights leader Harvey Milk would have opposed singling out homosexual youths, a relative says. Andy Milk, nephew of the first openly gay elected official in San Francisco, said his uncle fought for integration and acceptance of gays and other minorities into mainstream society, not segregation.

As you might expect, New York City has high schools that cater to students with special talents and interests. One is the Bronx High School of Science. Since its founding in 1938, it has produced five Nobel Prize winners in physics and countless other scientists and physicians. Another is the La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts. Its graduates include many actors and performers, including Adrien Brody, who won this year's Oscar for Best Actor. This fall, a new special interest high school will be added to the list, but its purpose isn't nearly as noble as the others'....

I heard recently that a Hispanic bishop was planning to sue NYC for the illegally segregated Harvey Milk school for gays-only. Just wondering if there's any news on this or any other lawsuit... or if any Freeper has connections to file a suit. Are we going to rally against this place? I'm up for it.

Aside from the Episcopal Church's heretical election of a sodomite bishop, the latest scandal in the collapse of culture is a high school in New York City which is being set aside for so-called "homosexual" students. Wisely, a Latino-American group is suing the city for discrimination and ConservativePetitions.com has mounted a campaign targeting the mayor of New York. Even more insidious and less publicized is the on-going infiltration of prep schools by pedophiles. Exeter and Groton are among the best boarding schools in the country and have even helped educate American presidents. Regrettably, these formerly Christian, highly structured, exemplary academies...

We have heard for years that one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter. But have we ever heard that one generation's internment camp is another generation's public high school? The New York School Board, in an effort to show that homosexual kids should be treated like everyone else, has curiously rounded them all up in the Harvey Milk High School and will keep them there until graduation.

This is a moment of woe and wonder for supporters of gay rights. The Episcopalians elected their first openly gay bishop, braving a last-minute sex scandal and the threat of schism. The Massachusetts Supreme Court is about to rule on legalizing gay unions. The first LGBT high school is set to open in New York City. And Jay Leno got a makeover from the boys of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. But there are also signs of a serious backlash. On Wednesday, the president vowed to codify "one way or the other" the "sanctity of marriage" between a man...

A good measure of the government is how it spends our tax dollars. So let us consider what Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, had done with our hard-earned money. Despite across-the-board tax increases, Bloomberg recently funneled $3.2 million into Harvey Milk High School, which calls itself "the nation's first accredited public high school designed to meet the needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth." Just one thing: Teenagers simply aren't emotionally ready to make radical decisions about their sexual identity. What child, for example, knows for certain that he or she should have a sex change...

Should New York City have a separate public school for gay teenagers? That question was asked and answered nearly 20 years ago with the establishment of the Harvey Milk School - a program that currently has 50 students and a solid record of achievement, particularly in luring dropouts back into the classroom. Now, that program is to be formalized into a separate school with roughly double the enrollment. Little else has changed. Since its creation in 1984, the Harvey Milk School has been open to all students, gay or not, and all those attending do so voluntarily. It's hardly the...

What a great time for the neo-segregationists of American apartheid. At Oberlin High School in Ohio, a parents' group has complained about the black history class being given by a white teacher. The black teacher who used to give it has a scheduling conflict, and the Oberlin Black Alliance for Progress thinks the white substitute won't be good for the students.
