Last week was a momentous one for the future of genetically engineered foods, both in the U.S. and in Europe. On July 24, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Impossible Burger, an all-veggie burger that "bleeds" and sizzles just like meat. The burger's star ingredient — a protein called heme that renders blood red and helps make meat a carnivore's delight — was granted GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status. In 2015, the FDA had required that the $400 million Silicon Valley startup, Impossible Foods, demonstrate that their heme, made by genetically modified yeast, was safe. But across...

The landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade and subsequent rulings upholding it have granted Americans the right to abortion since 1973, but the reality of that right varies dramatically from state to state. Since Roe became the law of the land, individual states have found dozens of ways to make it as difficult as possible for patients to actually access the procedure. From strict regulations on clinics and bans on abortion after a certain number of weeks, to requiring patients to receive counseling and undergo waiting periods, these laws have tested the limits of Roe — with some ending...

Have you ever wanted to confirm and measure your environment directly, rather than rely on the government or others? I added an air quality detector to my own instruments this week—now can monitor in real-time my air quality, radiation, and weather. I've even got a surveyor's plumb hanging on a string over a target to visually observe earthquakes, it works, but is uncalibrated and gives satisfaction that yes, there is an earthquake underway. Minutes later I may get the email from USGS and UNR's seismological laboratory. But I distract from what I'd like to discuss and ask about today, air...

The pro-abortion media may have finally reached the bottom of the barrel in its pathetic decade-long push to tarnish the reputation of Abortion Pill Reversal (APR). On Saturday, Truthout ran a commentary by author Shireen Rose Shakouri, comparing the life-saving APR protocol to racist medical experiments conducted on minority men and women throughout American history. Without a shred of evidence to support the outrageous allegation against APR, the author says, the “ongoing experiment with women’s health and bodies is likely being pushed disproportionately on women of color.” To make her point, Shakouri briefly—and I mean, briefly—explores one experiment in the...

In March, 16-year-old Jeremiah Thomas was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive bone cancer. Since then, he has battled chemotherapy, radiation, a collapsed lung, paralysis, and, unfortunately, many social media trolls. But Jeremiah also has forged an unlikely partnership with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and forgiven those who taunt him. With perhaps only weeks left to live, Jeremiah—a former all-star, state champion football player from Waco, Texas—has been told numerous times on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook that he is not dying soon enough … because he took a stand for life. “Cancer is giving your mom a late term abortion. Lmao...

The Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service says the products, distributed by Caito Foods, have come into contact with lettuce contaminated with cyclospora. The parasite causes intestinal illnesses with flu-like symptoms and other ailments, which can last up to several months. The USDA says Caito Foods was notified from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine used in some of the salads was being recalled. The products affected by the recall have best-by dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.

In the early 2000s, hospitals across Australia began installing more hand-sanitizer dispensers in their rooms and hallways for staff, visitors and patients to use. Research showed these alcohol-based disinfectants helped battle staph infections in patients and certain kinds of drug-resistant bacteria. And rates of these infections went down. But other infections didn't drop when people started using the sanitizer stations. In fact, certain infections went up. In particular, enterococcal infections — caused by bacteria that affect the digestive tract, bladder, heart and other parts of the body — started increasing. This wasn't only happening in Australia. Countries around the world...

The team at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) showed that lab-grown organs were quickly accepted by the animals, and within just two weeks had developed a network of blood vessels. Previous attempts have failed with several hours of transplantation because the organs did not establish the complicated web of vessels needed for proper oxygen and blood flow. But the new experiments showed the lungs were still functioning two months after they were implanted and the animals had 100 per cent oxygen saturation, meaning all their red blood cells were carrying oxygen through the body.

Two employees of a North Shore assisted living center were booked with cruelty to the infirmed after they "cheered on" one resident as he beat up another, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday (Aug. 1). Latricia Johnson, 20, of Ponchatoula, and Tykeshia Berry, 30, of Hammond, were also booked into the parish jail with being a principal party to an aggravated second-degree battery and criminal conspiracy. The two suspects neglected to obtain medical treatment for the 22-year-old victim of the beating, who sustained serious injuries to his face and leg, the Sheriff's Office reported in a news release.

The maximum monthly Social Security benefit for a person retiring in 2018, at their full retirement age, is $2,788 per month , or $33,456 per year. To achieve this benefit, you must have had the maximum taxable earning for a whopping 35 years. It is for this reason, that most people’s benefits will be far less. Forget this number if you plan to retire ahead of your full retirement age. Do you think you could live off $2,788 per month? Before you think about that, it’s important to note that the average check for 2018 is just $1,404 per month....

he country's Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that a cluster of Ebola virus cases has been detected in North Kivu, a province in eastern Congo that shares borders with Rwanda and Uganda. The Ministry of Health informed the World Health Organization that four out of six samples in the cluster tested positive for Ebola in preliminary lab results. Additional testing is ongoing, according to WHO. These new cases have emerged just about a week after the government of Congo declared that a recent ravaging Ebola outbreak was over. That recent outbreak was the country's ninth on record since the...

The abortion giant Planned Parenthood launched yet another campaign this week to fight pro-life politicians and their work for unborn babies. The UK Independent reports the new “Unstoppable” campaign comes ahead of the midterm elections, when Planned Parenthood hopes pro-abortion Democrats will take control of Congress again. “If any singular organisation stands to gain the most from a possible wave of Democrat wins in November’s crucial midterm elections, its Planned Parenthood,” the report states. The billion dollar abortion “non-profit” is worried about its $500 million in taxpayer funding each year, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v....

Legislation that would dramatically increase an important contribution limit just cleared a major hurdle. The House of Representatives recently passed two pieces of legislation that would make significant changes to health savings accounts (HSAs), including a massive increase in the amount of tax-deferred contributions that could be made to them. These changes could not only allow Americans to get more of a tax deduction for their healthcare expenditures, but they could also help participants build their retirement nest eggs at a faster rate. Here's a rundown of what the new HSA contribution limit could be, why it matters for retirement...

It's not too late to increase your take-home from America's most important social program. There's a really good chance you'll be reliant on Social Security when you retire. According to data from the Social Security Administration, 62% of today's aged beneficiaries lean on the program to provide at least half of their monthly income. Of these folks, 34% rely on Social Security for virtually all of their income (90% to 100%). As for future retirees, national pollster Gallup found a strong expected reliance in an April 2018 survey. When polling nonretirees, Gallup observed that 30% expect Social Security to be...

Social Security benefits can be claimed at any point after a recipient turns age 62, and most Americans take their Social Security as soon as they can. Claiming benefits early can be smart, but it can pay off to wait. If you're deciding when to start receiving Social Security, here's what to consider. Estimate your expenses Retirement usually means a big drop in income, and if you don't have a solid grasp on what your spending is going to look like in retirement, then you won't be able to make the best decision on when to claim. Health officials are reminding people that condoms are not reusable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tweeted on its sexually transmitted disease site that condoms are for single use. Officials say they needed to tweet the message because people are washing or reusing condoms instead of throwing them away.
