The Finnish Flash will light up the Hockey Hall Of Fame. Teemu Selanne was the lock to be named among the 2017 inductees voted in Monday afternoon in his first year of eligibility, joined by three former NHLers who had been on the waiting list: Paul Kariya, Dave Andreychuk and Mark Recchi. Canadian national women world and Olympic champion Danielle Goyette rounded out the player category. Two builders were also added: long-time Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs and Canadian university coaching legend Clare Drake, who ran the University of Alberta program.

No kidding. Very happy news for me yesterday: Detroit Tiger Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez was voted into the Hall of Fame. (What? He played for some other teams as well? I don’t care.) Magglio Ordonez deserved better than his one-year-and-out fate. Carlos Guillen deserved better than zero votes. You may disagree, and you might even care about players who never played for the Tigers, although I can’t imagine why. But that’s one of the things the Hall of Fame elections are for - debate among fans.

An email from a sport made me flash back to my youth, 50 years ago, said to my wife where will Warren Spahn rank. Then the famous game of Spahn versus Marichal, the old warrior going against the Kid. Surprise, surprise with their new baseball metrics neither Spahn not Marichal made the top 25. The email and slide show made my junk file. Interesting article that points out how neither guy would give an inch for 16 innings. "Alvin Dark tried to take Marichal out for the first time in the ninth. The conversation did not go well. Marichal refused...

It's the definition of a "sure thing." The next class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame will be announced Saturday, and former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is sure to be inducted. It's #4's first time on the Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot, but his stats and stature make him a shoo-in. "Nothing is ever a lock, but I am honored to be here," Favre told NFL Network. "I never dreamed of MVP, I never dreamed of the Hall of Fame, I dreamed of playing. And running out with my helmet off, like I did in the...

Curt Schilling took on the Internet – and the entire Muslim world – on Tuesday and lost. Badly. The two-time National League strikeout king took to Twitter to voice his concern over Islamic extremism. He posted a photo of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler with the words, “It's said only 5-10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How'd that go?” The 48-year-old also tweeted, “The math is staggering when you get to true (numbers).” Schilling, who won three World Series championships during his 20-year MLB career, deleted the post after 10 minutes. Currently working with...
  • How Ty Cobb Was Framed as a Racist

    New York Post ^ | 5/31 | Kyle Smith
The two things everyone knows about Ty Cobb are that he was a phenomenal baseball player and that he was the worst racist ever to play the game. But one of these things is mostly wrong. Cobb, the first player voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the holder of more than 90 records upon his retirement and still the pace-setter with a .366 lifetime batting average, could be rude, but not nearly as nasty as you think. And far from being the most notorious racist in baseball history, he was an early and vocal supporter of integrating the big...

San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame offensive tackle Bob St. Clair died Monday night following a brief illness, the Pro Football Hall of Fame told NFL Media. He was 84 years old. A Bay Area legend, St. Clair teamed with fellow NFL Hall of Famers Ollie Matson and Gino Marchetti on Joe Kuharich's fabled University of San Francisco Dons squad that went undefeated in 1951. Drafted by his hometown 49ers in 1953, St. Clair emerged as one of the decade's top linemen, earning first- or second-team All-NFL honors nine times. He was also selected to five Pro Bowls and served...

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says he has received a formal request from Pete Rose asking that his lifetime ban be lifted and that he will consider the all-time hits leader's request "on its merits." "I want to make sure I understand all of the details of the Dowd Report and Commissioner [Bart] Giamatti's decision and the agreement that was ultimately reached," Manfred said after a meeting with Los Angeles Dodgers players in Arizona on Monday morning. "I want to hear what Pete has to say, and I'll make a decision once I've done that." Rose's...
  • Edgar Martinez should be in the baseball Hall of Fame

Edgar Martinez, a seven-time all-star, should be in the baseball Hall of Fame, but support for his candidacy has been waning over the past three seasons. “I’m not surprised that my percentage went down,” Martinez said a year ago. “We just have to wait and see for the future.” The biggest knock on his enshrinement is that he played as the team’s designated hitter and thus had little to no impact on the defensive part of the game. However, he still deserves to be in. For starters, the American League has required a designated hitter ever since the 1973 season,...

Tuesday wasn’t Curt Schilling’s day to be elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame and the Boston Red Sox former great believes his politics are one reason he fell short of the necessary number of votes. Schilling’s former teammate, Pedro Martinez, was elected, along with Randy Johnson, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio. Although he and Smoltz have similar stats, Schilling fell 240 votes short.

No matter what you think of Pete Rose, you can't deny what an electric moment it was on September 11th, 1985, when Rose became baseball's all-time major league hit leader -- a record that still stands today. And yet, the debate over whether his cardinal sin -- gambling on baseball -- should keep him out of the Hall of Fame for life remains as fierce as ever, as correspondent Lee Cowan explains in a profile of Rose, to be aired on CBS' "Sunday Morning" October 19... In a touching interview with Jeremy Schaap of ESPN, Pete Rose spoke of the reasons why he gambled on baseball, acknowledging he made a terrible mistake when he gambled and also erred in signing away his future when he was suspended. Prompted by Schaap, he concluded with a plea to Bud Selig to let him back in the game for which he has such a passion.
