If there is life on other planets, an Australian team of astronomers has just found the region in our Milky Way galaxy where it is most likely to exist.. Unfortunately, technology does not yet exist to get man within reach of his nearest possible neighbours. According to Charles Lineweaver, writing in Science, there are four ingredients needed to create complex life: the presence of a host star (such as the Sun), enough heavy elements (carbon, oxygen and nitrogen) to form a planet, sufficient time for biological evolution (at least four billion years in the case of Earth) and the absence...

The loser's guide to getting lucky By Professor Richard Wiseman University of Hertfordshire Why do some people get all the luck while others never get the breaks they deserve? A psychologist says he has discovered the answer. Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experience ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to contact me. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research and, over the...

A German website is giving the country's prisons star ratings just like a hotel guide. Inmates, staff and visitors rate the prisons based on a system of up to five stars. Almost all 220 German prisons are listed. One of the most popular is Hamburg prison, nicknamed Santa Fu. One inmate wrote: "Very good food, very nice cells, nice officers, a decent daily rhythm. I keep coming back." A member of staff there added: "The only thing missing is 24-hour room service. Sometimes I think I should change sides." But there is also heavy criticism, like the comments on Erfurt...

There's a whole new world of PC substitutes out there, says EDDIE LENNON. Time was when political correctness was the wet blanket of every conversation. You had to tiptoe around your own vocabulary like a mouse faced with a cheese-laden mousetrap, terrified of ensnaring yourself by just being yourself. Every chit-chat became a series of conversational booby-traps, each of them just waiting to help you offend one minority or another by a less than fully premeditated remark. For a short time that somehow seemed like forever, everything became so PC that life was like one eternally stilted dinner party, redolent...

The writer of the book was on MSNBC and looked very good.http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0028632613/qid=1018190770/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-0554275-4226319 17 of 22 people found the following review helpful: Remarkable, January 28, 2002 Reviewer: A reader It is really remarkable the lengths to which the Arab lobby and their longtime cohorts have gone to pan this excellent book. One would think that Amazon was in bed with them, too, since it has effectively allowed for a forum of negative comments about this book that are shallow and non-specific, saying only that "the book is bad." Sorry, but that's not helpful. Nor is the term "propaganda" that is so...
