LOS ANGELES (Nov. 16) -- Betty Sugiyama was rushing to catch a train for a shopping trip when authorities say the unthinkable happened: A homeless woman leapt from a bench and shoved her onto the tracks. Witnesses said the woman then calmly returned to her seat as Sugiyama writhed in pain on the tracks with a cracked skull. The 84-year-old Little Tokyo resident died soon after, and the suspect was arrested on murder charges. A sister of Sugiyama who witnessed the attack remained stunned Tuesday that anyone would want to kill her friendly younger sibling, a Japanese-American who had grown...

A San Antonio fast-food restaurant cashier laughed at a robbery suspect and told him to get a job if he wanted money during a failed holdup ... Police said the suspect approached the worker and demanded money, but the cashier laughed and apparently didn't realize the man was trying to hold up the place. The suspect then allegedly pulled out a box cutter and demanded the cashier's wallet. The employee complied, but had no money in his billfold.

There it is. I have uttered those words so contemptible in modern society that the mere allusion to such a sentiment is beyond reproach. Please forgive me, but I no longer have the patience to deal with those who wish to remain mired in the lowest depths of the social order. Are there not means available to these people who perpetually contend for the scraps from the table of those of those who actually contribute to the betterment of our world? This is not to say that I have no compassion for those who are infirmed, whether it be in...

The number of homeless families seeking help from Hennepin County is up dramatically over last year, alarming human services officials and forcing the county to use a downtown hotel as an overflow family shelter. In the first six months of the year, 27 percent more homeless families came to the county for help than in the same period last year. People who work with the homeless say the increase is driven by people losing their jobs, foreclosures on apartment buildings that displace renters and the effects of welfare reform that has recipients reaching the end of their 60-month lifetime limit...

Tree sitters marked their one-year anniversary of oak-grove occupation Sunday with a peaceful party that included a food delivery from a group of grandmothers, two dancing bears, chocolate cake and a promise to stay in the trees another year -- if that's what it takes to save the oaks. About 200 people stood on the sidewalk outside two chain-link fences Sunday afternoon, craning their necks upward to get a look at the guests of honor -- a dozen or so tree sitters perched on platforms and branches that are draped with pulleys, ropes, banners and bathroom buckets. "What is going...

My friend, Austin, calls me up, angry, and starts telling me how I have to help him move all of his remaining stuff out of his parents' house. I ask him why, and he tells me about a job interview he got in a company through his dad. Austin interviewed with this same company 3-4 years ago. He was rejected. This time there were certain people involved with the last interview, but mostly new faces. Austin though it went "awesome", but in reality, it was a disaster. Later that day, Austin called his dad about something unrelated, only to be...

When Christine Drake worked as a Starbucks barista, the Seattle woman with psychiatric disabilities said it was the first time in her life that she "felt a sense of accomplishment." But after two years on the job, a new manager at the Starbucks store at 425 Queen Anne Ave. N. in Seattle allegedly discriminated against Drake, decreased her hours and berated her in front of customers, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Lisa Cox, an EEOC lawyer, said the world's largest coffee retailer ignored Drake's requests for help and violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by not accommodating...

I have no idea how to categorize this, but it's funny that the party favor craze has gotten to this - The Pond (children's videos) is giving away 20 dvd's to ONE PERSON! Three times, they're doing this as part of their drawing. What a funny idea.

TIJUANA, Mexico — Mexico lobbied for six years for a comprehensive immigration reform that would allow millions to cross into the United States legally. Instead, it's getting a fence. Mexicans — from leading politicians to migrants preparing to cross illegally — consider the U.S. plan to fence off much of the border shameful, offensive and ill-conceived. President Bush on Wednesday signed a bill that would allot $1.2 billion for hundreds of miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border and for more vehicle barriers, lighting and infrared cameras.

ROCK ISLAND -- Mo likes to twirl fire. A red stripe crosses her face like a mask. The words "Kill Your TV" are written in black from forehead to chin. What appears to be a red nylon bath puff is strapped on top of Harrison's head, like a rooster's comb. It matches his red cutoff T-shirt. "Turn Off Your TV" is in black on his right cheek. He sits on the upper stage of two handmade pontoon boats, strumming an acoustic guitar and singing. Bare feet dangle over the Mississippi River. Sunshine and blue skies welcome their journey here. "Harrison...

PALMETTO, Florida (AP) -- Mark Giorgio figured a 50-foot plunge was worth $20. Giorgio, 47, was counting his money and walking across the U.S. 41 bridge over the Manatee River Monday when a $20 bill blew out of his hand and flew over the rail. He followed. And plummeted 50 feet into the river. Then he swam about 100 yards to fish the bill from the water. "I got my money back, hell yeah," Giorgio told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. "Twenty bucks is a lot of money when you're broke." He was fished from the water by a passing Florida Fish...
