New strikes are set to take place in Greece starting May 10 following the rescue package and new austerity measures approved by the Greek parliament over the weekend.
The pending 48-hour strike will affect all pharmacies in the country, which will remain closed. Furthermore, Greek media outlets will also be on strike from 11am until 3pm. This will include all private and state-run publications and television channels.
Concurrently, a sit-in demonstration was staged by many people in protest against the austerity measures and against the murder of three bank employees on May 5 2010.
EU finance ministers have agreed to implement emergency measures amounting to a 500-billion euro rescue package in an attempt to thwart the "Greek disease" from spreading to other countries in the euro zone.
According to international media reports, 16 members of the euro currency bloc will have access to 440 billion euros of loan guarantees and 60bn euros of emergency European Commission funding, while the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will make available about 250 billion euro.
"We shall defend the euro whatever it takes," economic affairs commissioner Olli Rehn told the BBC.
EU leaders had to come up with a support mechanism to prevent Greeces debt crisis from spilling over across the continent. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that the new set of austerity measures has triggered increasing disdain among the general population.
The mounting fear is that like Greece, like other members, such as Portugal and Spain, could also experience severe financial instability.
Swedish finance minister Anders Borg said it was vital to reach a deal. "We now see
wolf-pack behaviours [in the markets] and if we will not stop these packs, even if it is self-inflicted weakness, they will tear the weaker countries apart," Greek daily Kathimerini said.
They want another $50 Billion a year 'chance.' How touching
Never on a Sunday.
Uh-huh. I’d hire them folks...(sarc)
I want to give them a chance to work hard and earn their pay.
The greeks on their two hour riot lunch break!
From Alexander the Great to Aristole the Moocher in a coupla millenium.
Attention all Greeks...Attention all Greeks...THERE IS NO MORE MONEY!!!!! Rinse and repeat.
They work for the government and can’t be fired.
Oh my gosh they look like a bunch of spoiled brats. What hand outs are they mad about? The gov isn’t pay for their cigs anymore?
Will they have enough cigs to make it through this? Stay tuned.
What about my STORIES?????
LOL
Only 48 hours?
Hey guys, why not make it 48 days? Or 48 months?
Or even better, just strike for 48 years at no pay. That’d do wonders for the Greek balance sheet.
Any guesses what are the odds those cigs were bought on the black market for tax avoidance? I would say 99.99%.
Keep all pharmacies closed. Just brilliant.
Don’t they speak Greek in Greece?
These folks have worked harder striking than they ever did on their jobs.
I thought it was their 4 week paid vacation, whether they work our not?
What “austerity” measures were passed?
We’re probably being harsh on them, looks like they are just a few years away from their retirement so they are anxious. Now that they have worked for 10 years, the government wants to extend their retirement. The humanity!
