As many readers likely know, New York is the center of the legal profession in this country. New York City has a large community of major law firms that advise the business community both across the country and also internationally. The President signed a bill into law just before Halloween, an appropriate date for this law. The expanded federal hate crimes law, hailed by supporters as the first major federal gay rights legislation, was added to a $680 billion defense authorization bill because if offered up on its own merits the bill would have never made it past the Senate.
