"Wow, in just one day, Firefox 1.5 has already been downloaded more than 1.5 million times. That smashes our 1.0 first day downloads by half a million," said Dotzler in his blog. "If you haven't downloaded Firefox 1.5, get it while it's hot!" This demand appears to be continuing, according to a blog post from Chris Beard, the vice-president of products at Mozilla. "There are now more than two million people enjoying a better Web experience with Firefox 1.5. Demand continues to be high, greatly exceeding what we saw last year with the release of Firefox 1.0," said Beard. Firefox...

The much-anticipated release of Firefox 1.5 has finally been posted on Mozilla's FTP site. This is the full release, unlike the Release Candidates 1, 2 and 3 that were posted on the Mozilla.org website on November 1, November 10 and November 17, respectively. The Mozilla Foundation, the non-profit foundation that supports Firefox development and promotion, in addition to its for-profit Mozilla Corporation subsidiary, plan to accompany the release with a media marketing blitz some time this week. The centerpiece of the marketing blitz will be user-submitted videos of Firefox users evangelizing their favorite web browser. These videos will be made...

Firefox 1.5 will be available for free on Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Pacific Standard Time, at www.getfirefox.com and www.mozilla.com, according to the open-source group. A complete press release outlining the new features in Firefox 1.5, as well as some additional Mozilla news, will be issued at the time the new version is available. Browser competition hasn't been this fierce since the mid-1990s, and the fight is becoming even more intense as Microsoft, Mozilla, and Opera ready new versions of their software for release. With version 7 of Internet Explorer, Microsoft's developers have seriously overhauled the browser, giving it popular features such as tabbed browsing, as well as improved security, thus closing the gap between it and its rivals. But even though the new iterations of both Firefox and Opera bring mostly incremental changes, that's still enough to keep them ahead of IE.We took Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1, Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 1,...

Mozilla is gearing up to launch a large-scale marketing drive when Firefox 1.5 is released. Christopher Beard, the vice-president of products at Mozilla, said on Monday that there is a "strong likelihood" that Firefox 1.5, the next major version of the open source browser, will be released on Nov. 29. Beard said the corporation is planning a "big marketing push" that will coincide with the release of 1.5. This will include a community marketing campaign that will encourage Firefox fans to tell the world about their favorite browser by publishing home-made videos on a Mozilla Web site. "You will have...

Firefox turned one year old Wednesday, marking yet another milestone for the popular open-source browser. Since the debut of Firefox 1.0 last November, users have downloaded 106.4 million copies of the open-source Web browser, according to the Mozilla Foundation, which coordinated the development of Firefox. And within a span of a year, Firefox has grabbed 8.65 percent of the market and put a dent into Internet Explorer's dominance, according to NetApplications' October results. "At the launch, we had a million downloads on the first day and have not seen any let up in demand," said Chris Beard, head of marketing...

Ladies and gentlemen, the browser war just took on a whole new hue. A new, Firefox-based browser called Flock hit the Web today (as a developers' preview, anyway), and, in my opinon at least, it looks like a winner. If by "winner" you mean "the product that makes you wonder what we were all fighting about in the first place." More after the jump (really). If it's anything like it sounds, Flock will take browsing to its obvious next step: a gateway to Web 2.0. It integrates with del.icio.us for online, shared bookmarking. It includes a built-in RSS reader, integrated...

A small team of developers in California on Friday launched a cutting-edge Firefox-based Web browser dubbed Flock, which integrates next-generation Web technologies such as RSS content feeds, blogs and bookmark and photo sharing. The team of developers was spearheaded by Bart Decrem, who is well known in the open-source community due to his involvement in the Mozilla Foundation and his ill-fated start-up Eazel, which from 1999 until its demise in 2001 aimed to bring greater usability features to the Linux desktop. "Indeed the time is upon us," wrote Flock co-founder Geoffrey Arone on his blog shortly before the release. "We...

The past ten days I have been getting ad windows while my hard drive spins up and I can only see the ad when I exit. I downloaded and paid for Spyware Doctor after it told me that I had 166 "infections" and set the "on guard" function assuming it would remove the infections. They are still there and every time I try to find a removal tool it only gives me the option of scanning. Have I been had?

st shy of Firefox's first birthday party, the Mozilla Foundation celebrated the 100 millionth download of its Web browser Wednesday. Mozilla has seen steady adoption of its browser since its release last November. After a somewhat higher download rate immediately following its release, the browser has settled into between 200,000 and 300,000 downloads a day, said Asa Dotzler, the Mozilla liaison to the SpreadFirefox community. "This is a great milestone. Our massive, worldwide community of grassroots marketers and users--not to mention the developers--have helped to put out a product that's really kicking butt," he said. Firefox has enjoyed an enthusiastic...

Firefox 1.0.7 (free) updates the popular open-source alternative to Internet Explorer with the latest security and stability fixes. Firefox incorporates tabbed browsing, and supports various themes to change the look and feel of the browser. Numerous extensions can be installed that provide additional features or change functionality/behavior.

For the second time in three months, a security breach has shut down the marketing website used to promote the Firefox browser. Late Monday, members of the Spread Firefox community were notified that their Spread Firefox site had been hit by attackers looking to exploit a bug in the TWiki collaboration software, which had been running on the server. The Mozilla Foundation does not believe that any sensitive information was compromised in the attack, but it is encouraging the approximately 100,000 Spread Firefox members to reset their passwords. "With these things it's hard to determine the exact nature of what...

Extremely Critical Flaw Found in FireFox Peter Zelezny has discovered a vulnerability in Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability is caused due to the shell script used to launch Firefox parsing shell commands that are enclosed within backticks in the URL provided via the command line. This can e.g. be exploited to execute arbitrary shell commands by tricking a user into following a malicious link in an external application which uses Firefox as the default browser (e.g. the mail client Evolution on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4). This vulnerability can only...

Users running Firefox on Linux may be vulnerable to a security vulnerability that can be exploited to compromise the user's system. Security firm Secunia warned on Tuesday that a flaw rated as "extremely critical" has been found in Firefox 1.0.6. The flaw can only be exploited on Unix or Linux based environments and can be fixed by upgrading to Firefox 1.0.7.

Symantec: Mozilla browsers more vulnerable than IE Mozilla Web browsers are potentially more vulnerable to attack than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, according to a Symantec report.
