The core of Fallout 76 still has numerous issues that need fixing... but adding in functioning non-playable characters is probably the most important and necessary update the game’s needed to make. The difference it creates is so huge that you have to wonder what the original thinking behind the NPC free launch was. NPCs change that, having someone else there in the wasteland alongside you simply because having someone else there adds a layer of meaning to everything you do beyond aiming for better gear. For anyone unaware, Fallout 76 is an online only, pay to play MMO. It no longer is a single player RPG. This forever changes the Fallout experience for me. It’s dead. I have grown up enjoying the Fallout world. Sadly, I will never wander the landscape of post apocalyptic West Virgina. A Fallout 76 player, RpTheHotrod, is roleplaying Preston, and quite impressively: not only did he use the character creator to design a convincing Preston lookalike, and outfit him with Preston-style clothing, he's playing audio clips from Preston's endless settlement quests over his mic to other players. not sure how much further you can take this Preston cosplay: you can build bases in Fallout 76, but there's no settlement system due to the complete lack of settlers. But just approaching other players as Preston and giving them a good laugh (plus a deep sigh) seems pretty damn rewarding in itself. Hopefully...
