A 20-minute video shot by a bespectacled young man who calls himself Guanguan appears to confirm reports of China’s vast network of concentration camps used to persecute Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. Guanguan says in the video that he traveled previously to China’s far western region in 2019 but went back in 2020 after reading an article from the U.S. news outlet BuzzFeed that indicated the locations of some of the camps there. “But due to the Chinese government’s restrictions, foreign journalists can hardly gain access to Xinjiang to conduct interviews,” he says on the video, which includes...

First-of-its-kind courtroom testimony here has corroborated allegations that the Chinese government has built a network of internment camps in western China where Muslim minorities are held without charge for “reeducation.” Sayragul Sauytbay, an ethnic Kazakh Chinese national, said she crossed from China’s Xinjiang region to Kazakhstan without proper papers after being forced to work at a camp where around 2,500 ethnic Kazakhs were being held for indoctrination. “In China, they call it a political camp, but really it was a prison in the mountains,” she told a court last month packed with Kazakh villagers, reporters and a few tight-lipped Chinese...

April 13, 2015, Monday TurkeyÂ’s Islamists betrayed Uyghurs, damaged ties with China Turkey's relations with China that were upgraded to a strategic partnership in 2010 were dealt a significant blow a year later when increasingly assertive political Islamists in the Turkish government started playing a game of proxies with the Uyghurs of Chinese nationality as part of their short-sighted vision of a regime change in their southern neighbor, Syria. This sudden turn of policy with respect to China's Xinjiang region, shaped at the highest level of the government with chief Islamist Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan setting the bar, has been a...

China has detained and intimidated dozens of ethnic Uighurs in the far western region of Xinjiang for speaking out on rights abuses following riots in the regional capital three years ago, Amnesty International said. In July 2009, the capital city of Urumqi was rocked by violence between majority Han Chinese and minority Uighurs that killed nearly 200 people. Many of the Muslim Uighurs, who speak a Turkic language and call Xinjiang home, chafe at Beijing's rule. Since then, China has executed nine people it accused of instigating the riots, detained and prosecuted hundreds and ramped up spending on security, according...
