Thursday as part of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage, network correspondents Gary and Lindsay Tuchman hit the slopes at Mt. Hood Skibowl in Oregon. The Tuchmans decided to interview fellow skiers about coming out to ring in the new year on the slopes. “Can I ask you a quick question? What made you decide to come here New Year’s Eve?” Tuchman asked a skier. “Oh gosh, just to get out and get some fresh air; be with friends and family,” the skier replied. Tuchman then shamed the skier for not wearing a mask during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “You don’t...

Elon Musk has been widely mocked after revealing the final version of his much-hyped underground transportation project. The Tesla and SpaceX founder’s Boring Company has been building a prototype tunnel system under Los Angeles since 2016 in a bid to relieve traffic congestion. It had been linked to the billionaire’s futuristic “hyperloop” concept of pods suspended on magnets travelling hundreds of kilometres an hour through vacuum tubes. While The Boring Company’s test tunnel did not feature an air vacuum, it promised to create a new kind of private, public and commercial transport system using special vehicles propelled on electric skates....

A white police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin opened fire on an unarmed Black man who was simply walking away from him -- shooting him point-blank seven times ... and it's all on video. He makes his away around a car in a nonthreatening manner, he opens the door and attempts to get inside. One of the cops grabs hold of his shirt, and for some inexplicable reason, he unloads seven rounds at arm's length. The victim was flown...

That’s sloppy, Joe. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden reprised his penchant for borrowing lines from other people’s work this week — apparently relying a bit too heavily on the words of a deceased Canuck party leader during his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, reports said. Biden concluded his Thursday night speech by saying: “For love is more powerful than hate. Hope is more powerful than fear. Light is more powerful than dark.”

top us if you’ve heard this one before: The media — excited about a story that confirms all of its favorite narratives — gives the “news” prominent airtime before journalists actually do the hard work of thoroughly fact-checking. And, before long, the actual news turns out to pretty much the opposite of what these credulous reporters claimed. It happened with Jussie Smollett. It happened with Covington. It happened with the Virginia girl whose dreads were supposedly cut off. And now it’s happened again — in the most predictable, absolutely unsurprising development of 2020.

A federal judge in Los Angeles has rejected a plea from prominent convicted lawyer Michael Avenatti to be released from jail because of the risk he could contract the coronavirus. U.S. District Court Judge James Selna turned aside Avenatti’s claims that a bout he had with pneumonia last September puts him in grave danger if COVID-19 begins to rampage through federal prisons like the Manhattan detention center where he’s currently locked up. Avenatti, who was convicted by a New York federal court jury last month on charges of trying to extort shoemaking giant Nike and is facing other federal charges...

Despite her massive national media presence, it appears U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., isn’t taking reelection for granted. At a Saturday kickoff event in her bid for a second term, the far-left freshman congresswoman told supporters she wanted to see voter turnout in New York’s 14th Congressional District increase by “four times” over her previous run in 2018. No fewer than 12 Democrats have filed in the district to run against Ocasio-Cortez in the primary election on June 23, according to radio station WINS of New York City. In addition, at least three Republicans will vie for a chance to...

Matt Schlapp, the head of the American Conservative Union, said Romney is not allowed at the event after the Utah Republican voted in favor of summoning witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump. Romney was one of two Republicans who joined 47 Democrats in supporting the motion, which failed to pass on Friday. Russian scientists have published a concept for a new kind of nuclear reactor. It’s a hybrid reactor, meaning it includes both fusion and fission, and it runs almost exclusively on thorium instead of more volatile uranium. In computer simulations, the research team found its novel design of an “energy-generating blanket” could still produce high power with a relatively small footprint and not much radioactive waste. There’s a lot to like about this design, including how it offers interesting middle-ground solutions in terms of fuel, reactor configuration, and safety. Thorium is one of the most abundant elements of its kind—more abundant...
