The media — excited about a story that confirms all of its favorite narratives — gives the “news” prominent airtime before journalists actually do the hard work of thoroughly fact-checking. And, before long, the actual news turns out to pretty much the opposite of what these credulous reporters claimed.

It happened with the Virginia girl whose dreads were supposedly cut off.

My BIL who was a Marine, and later a Boy scout leader, taught me that a hangman’s noose should have 13 loops. Looks like the one pictured is missing 4.

The number thirteen was thought to be unlucky. Consequently, in myth, if not in actual practice, thirteen coils were found in ahangman’s noose, a foreboding sign for those convicted to be hanged.

What was so odd about the story is we never saw the picture of the “noose”.
Had we, the story would have been dead on arrival (can I say that?). Everyone would have known it was just a knotted loop to grab on to close the garage.
