Archaeologists have discovered a small chlorite vial containing a deep red cosmetic preparation believed to be an ancient type of lipstick in the Jiroft region of southeastern Iran. This relic, published in the journal Scientific Reports on February 1st, is the oldest known red lipstick from the Bronze Age (between 2000 and 1600 B.C.). The carved tube came from an ancient graveyard that reemerged in 2001 after the nearby river flooded. According to the study, people plundered the cemetery and sold whatever they could find. Several of the artifacts were eventually found and given back to a nearby museum by...

Parents in Conroe, Texas were recently shocked to discover that a drag queen had been brought in to teach the Willis High School cosmetology students how to apply makeup. According to one teacher, however, these parents have no right to be outraged, and what’s more, he believes that parents “don’t know what’s best for their children.” And they wonder why families are flocking to homeschool? SMH! Community Impact Newspaper reported that the school administration was fully aware that the drag queen, known as Lynn Adonis-Deveaux, had a history of performing in drag shows but believed he would not be showing...

Some small businesses are scrambling to figure out how to stay afloat after a high court ruling. A recent California Supreme Court decision is changing the way independent contractors are classified, and it’s already having a big impact on local shops. May fear it will hurt millions of workers and affect businesses’ bottom lines. The work doesn’t stop at Downtown Sacramento’s Bottle and Barlow, even if it became a one-man shop. “I lost my entire staff,” said owner Anthony Gianotti. He says all seven of his barbers quit after a state supreme court ruling that will change their way of work. “It doesn’t just affect...

In a major victory for common sense, a group of cosmetologists defeated an insanely stupid regulation passed down by the state of Louisiana.Louisiana, just like the other 49 states in the Land of the Free, governs licensing requirements for dozens… hundreds of professions… ranging from athletic trainers to tour guides to barbers and cosmetologists. And most of the time the licensing requirements are just plain idiotic. In Louisiana, for example, the State Board of Cosmetology had formerly required an unbelievable 750 hours of training (which costs thousands of dollars) simply to be able to thread eyebrows.(If you’re like me and totally...

KOTA BARU, Malaysia - In a softly lit, wood-paneled spa, the personal beauticians of a Malaysian queen are training a new generation of Muslims in the art of feminine grooming as part of a royal effort to save young women from vice. The project has drawn attention as much for its objective as for its location - Malaysia's most backward state, Kelantan, and the only one governed by the opposition Islamic fundamentalist party that recommends keeping the female form under wrap. With the motto "Beauty Is Women's Top Asset," the salon set up in 2004 by Kelantan Queen Tengku Anis...
