Even after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella proclaimed Microsoft loved Linux and Microsoft released a specialized Linux for switches, Azure Cloud Switch, many don't buy that Microsoft believes in Linux. What will it take? Maybe, it will be this: Microsoft has selected Ubuntu for its first Linux-based software-as-a service offering, HDInsight, Microsoft's big data Hadoop-on-Azure service. Windows and Ubuntu working together.Microsoft has partnered with Canonical, Ubuntu's parent company, and Hortonworks, a major developer of the Hadoop program. Hadoop enables distributed processing of big data over commodity server clusters and clouds. Together the three companies have made it possible to run HDInsight...

Across the country, many employees are seated at desks for the majority of an eight-hour workday. As technology creates an increase in sedentary lifestyles, the impact of sitting on vascular health is a rising concern. Now, researchers have found that when a person sits for six straight hours, vascular function is impaired -- but by walking for just 10 minutes after a prolonged period of sitting, vascular health can be restored.

When we released Raspberry Pi 2 in February this year, we announced that Microsoft’s Windows 10 IoT Core, a version of Windows 10 for small Internet-of-Things devices that may or may not have a screen, would be available for the device. Since the Windows Insider release of Windows 10 Core in August, we’ve found that lots of people looking for a Pi 2 are arriving at sellers’ websites from sites catering for Windows developers. Many Windows developers are coming to Raspberry Pi for the first time; we couldn’t be more pleased to welcome them, and we hope they’ll encounter much...

Microsoft will later this year release its open-source friendly lake for big-data analytics in the cloud. Azure Data Lake Store – announced at Build in April – will be released as a preview, Microsoft said Monday. The store will be built on Apache YARN for developers and data scientists, to analyse information, and will use Azure HDInsight – a managed service for Hadoop, Spark, Storm and Hbase. HDInsight was developed by Microsoft working with Ubuntu-shop Canonical and Hadoop spinner Hortonworks, Microsoft and Canonical said. In preparation for the preview Microsoft Monday threw the doors open on managed Linux clusters. Microsoft’s...

For decades, DARPA, the secretive research arm of the Department of Defense, has dreamed of turning soldiers into cyborgs. And now it’s finally happening. The agency has funded projects that involve implanting chips into soldiers’ brains that could one day enhance performance on the battlefield and repair traumatized brains once the fog of war has lifted. “Of the 2.5 million Americans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, 300,000 of them came home with traumatic brain injury,” journalist Annie Jacobsen told NPR. “DARPA initiated a series of programs to help cognitive functioning, to repair some of this damage. And those programs...

Ever since Windows 10 launched back in July, one topic of conversation has overshadowed everything the new operating system does right: privacy concerns. Everyone with a Windows device is (rightfully) terrified that Microsoft is monitoring everything they do, so on Monday, Microsoft decided to finally issue an official response in order to clear the air. In a blog post on Windows.com, Microsoft executive VP Terry Myerson has taken the first step to earning back the trust of the individuals who are concerned about their privacy in regards to Windows 10. He noted that the data Microsoft collects “is encrypted in...

Released on July 29, Windows 10 has reportedly surpassed the 100 million installs milestone, sometime last week.Microsoft released the new operating system version as a free upgrade to Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users and saw the adoption rate spiking through the first few weeks. We already saw reports of the operating system reaching 75 million and then 81 million downloads earlier this month. Citing unnamed sources, reports are now claiming that the OS has finally reached the 100 million installation milestone,...

Yesterday a few of us got a warning that FR (the redirect page that goes to articles) was not allowed due to being a possible Malware site. This warning was placed up due to our browsers being in check with google which provides the browsers with a list of suspected Malware sites. When one tries to surf to a site that has been flagged as containing Malware or is known as a redirect portal that has been flagged as possible redirecting to bad sites it activates a warning page and will not let you proceed. This can be a good...

“Five seconds, just five seconds, all the iPhones 6s are gone!†Chin Lan reports for M.I.C Gadget. “[As] we have reported previously, the sales of iPhone 6S is messing up in Hong Kong. No kidding at all! It is almost impossible to purchase an iPhone 6S over here, because all the iPhones go straight into scalpers’ stock inventory.†“We previously reported Chinese scalpers use a “special” Windows software for bulk iPhone purchases, and today, we discover the way they work with the software,†Lan reports. “So first of all, the reason why a team of scalpers have so many Apple...

Disclosure: I own a few shares of Apple AAPL -0.88% stock. About a year ago, it was discovered that the Apple iPhone 6 Plus was relatively easy to bend — which is an issue that became known as “bendgate.” After Unbox Therapy posted a video of an Apple iPhone 6 Plus bend test, the term “bendgate” flooded social media and went viral. “Bendgate” eventually became a PR nightmare for the Cupertino giant. So Apple addressed the “bendgate” issue by releasing a statement saying: “With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of...

"If you've got a factory full of children in China assembling phones for 17 cents an hour, you've got a lot of nerve calling someone else opportunistic." Aaron Sorkin has lashed out at Apple CEO Tim Cook's recent assertion that filmmakers were being "opportunistic" in making films about the late tech titan Steve Jobs.Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during a press junket roundtable for Universal's Danny Boyle-directed Steve Jobs in London, the writer claimed that he and those working at the top of the project had taken pay cuts to get it made."Nobody did this movie to get rich,"...

eBay, one of the leading players in the global e-commerce market, is expected to face a tough road ahead after the recent spin-off of its payments business. In our valuation model, we forecast the company to lose market share in the global B2C e-commerce market, which was valued at over $1.5 trillion in 2015, over our forecast horizon. This is as the company is seeing dramatic increase in competition, from both e-commerce giants such as Amazon and Alibaba, as well as from upcoming players such as Jet.com.

Apple has posted an “XcodeGhost Q&A” information page: I’ve heard about malicious apps created by XcodeGhost — what does this mean? We always recommend developers use the free, secure tools we provide them — including Xcode — to ensure they’re creating the most secure apps for App Store customers. Some developers downloaded counterfeit versions of Xcode that have been infected with malware and created apps that were just as infected. Apple incorporates technologies like Gatekeeper expressly to prevent non-App Store and/or unsigned versions of programs, including Xcode, from being installed. Those protections had to have been deliberately disabled by the...

The FTC has launched an investigation into Apple’s dealings with competing music streaming services in its App Store, according to multiple sources,†Micah Singleton reports for The Verge. “The investigation is targeting Apple’s 30 percent fee charged to subscription services who sign up new users through the App Store. This has been a major point of conflict between Apple and rival music services.†“The FTC’s inquiries have picked up over the recent weeks, on the heels of its initial investigation into whether Apple pressured labels to kill Spotify’s free streaming tier,†Singleton reports. “Sources with direct knowledge of the matter...
