During the period when social media was increasingly putting pressure on legacy media outlets, driving down their profits, a phrase crept into the national lexicon. “Learn to code.” While it was no doubt said in a derisive or at least humorous fashion by most, it carried an underlying assumption that most people accepted. Perhaps you should learn to code. That’s where the jobs of the future would be. But the period when that will be true may turn out to have a much shorter lifespan than anticipated. The rise of Artificial Intelligence and chatbot apps is already automating the work...

Can't copy and paste from the article so here's the link. It's pretty intriguing. Sadly this may be the closest we get to having The Winds of Winter, it's been twelve years since the last Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire book. And Martin isn't getting any younger.

As artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology takes off, the Biden Administration is allegedly pursuing efforts to make sure that such new technology adopts a left-wing worldview by default. According to Fox News, the report comes from the watchdog group American Accountability Foundation (AAF), which said in a new memo that top officials in the Biden White House are attempting to program “dangerous ideologies” into new A.I. systems. “Under the guise of fighting ‘algorithmic discrimination’ and ‘harmful bias,’ the Biden administration is trying to rig AI to follow the woke left’s rules,” said Tom Jones, the president of AAF. “Biden is being...

Without any warning, Flickr.com suddenly eliminates entire account, without requested specific explanation, or offer of recovery. Without any prior warning or specific explanation afterward - despite attempts for any - about 3 weeks ago flickr.com (owned by SmugMug and headquartered in San Francisco, California suddenly eliminated my entire account, with no option to recover images. There was nothing even close to porn, or violence, racism, vulgarity, profanity... among my pics, or known violations of copyrighted material (that would not qualify as "fair use"), and I mostly used Flickr for my garden photos. But the purgation occurred after I had uploaded images...

On the verge of tears, Nathan Nkunzimana recalled watching a video of a child being molested and another of a woman being killed. Eight hours a day, his job as a content moderator for a Facebook contractor required him to look at horrors so the world wouldn’t have to. Some overwhelmed colleagues would scream or cry, he said. Now, Nkunzimana is among nearly 200 former employees in Kenya who are suing Facebook and local contractor Sama over working conditions that could have implications for social media moderators around the world. It is the first known court challenge outside the United...

'Thank you so much for sharing,' says a member of an online forum, discussing tips on how to create your own version of artificial intelligence 'chatbot' ChatGPT. Are there any plans to share your previous models?' It sounds innocent enough, but this is just one of dozens of dark web pedophile groups exchanging advice on how to build 'uncensored' chatbots that can produce reams of child porn. Chatbots are computer programs that use artificial intelligence (AI) to interact with humans. They have become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, with users able to ask them to generate lengthy pieces of text,...

Melinda French Gates has shared she is 'very nervous about artificial intelligence' being 'baked with bias' because there is a lack of women developing such tools. The comments appear to take a jab at ex-husband Bill Gates, 67, who is leading the charge for the systems and has faced sexual harassment allegations from former female staff. 'We don't have enough women who are computer scientists and expertise in artificial intelligence,' French Gates, 58, told CNN Thursday. She continued to explain that the tech needs to 'take all people's points of view and see society and, quite frankly, see the world...

Apple announced it will permanently do away with the My Photo Stream album next month. The feature automatically stores pictures taken in the last 30 days. Due to the impending shutdown, My Photo Stream stopped uploading snaps on June 26 — and everything in the album will be deleted when the service ceases July 26. However, any pics that were uploaded to My Photo Stream before June 26 will remain in iCloud for 30 days from the date of upload and will be available on devices where My Photo Stream is enabled. To ensure you do not lose any pictures,...

A unique home in Los Angeles County that captured the interest of California homebuyers — and started a wider conversation about the high cost of getting into the real estate market — has found a new owner. The home, located in Alhambra, was popular among home-seekers because of its modest (for California) price of $250,000. But it also made nationwide headlines due to its location: It’s built into the side of a bridge that overlooks a drainage ditch.

When the 'police' told her that they needed her help to lure a hacker out, she used her hard-earning savings as bait. But the 35-year-old woman, surnamed Li, was swindled $18,000 on Monday (Jun 26) after it turned out that the so-called cops were part of a scam. In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Li, who works at a construction company, shared that she received a call from her office landline at around 1pm that day. Claiming to be a Singtel employee, the man told the woman to download a software after 'discovering' an abnormality in her laptop's...

There has been an increasing recognition among both medical and psychological professionals, as well as the public media, of a concerning trend for child and adolescent users of audiovisual-based, algorithmic social media platforms (e.g., TikTok) to present with or claim functional psychiatric impairment that is inconsistent with or distinct from classic psychiatric nosology. In this short communication, we provide a detailed historical overview of this transdiagnostic phenomenon and suggest a conceptual model to organize thinking and research examining it. We then discuss the implications of our suggested model for accurate assessment, diagnosis, and medical-psychiatric treatment..... given extant evidence suggesting that...

Been here a long time. Maybe lost the handle in a few instances. Had posts removed for various reasons. Best place I've ever found. If I lose contact for some length of time, there are actual withdrawals. Schedule entire days on when I should hit 'refresh' and find out how many more crimes the Brandon Brood have committed. Can't imagine going anywhere else. Not kidding. Sooooo, the Robinsons have a budget that needs to be met. Can't meet it? Things have to be done. Moves have to be made. Don't really give a darn who makes a profit. I sure...

Someone has created a ChatGPT app for Windows 3.1 PCs. WinGPT brings a very basic version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT responses into an app that can run on an ancient 386 chip. It’s built by the same mysterious developer behind Windle, a Wordle clone for Microsoft’s Windows 3.1 operating system. “I didn’t want my Gateway 4DX2-66 from 1993 to be left out of the AI revolution, so I built an AI Assistant for Windows 3.1, based on the OpenAI API,” says the developer in a Hacker News thread. WinGPT is written in C using Microsoft’s standard Windows API and connects to...

As a separate question arising from my last "article" / question, I am about to make a recovery drive for a refurbished Dell desktop machine I purchased recently. (Dell Precision Tower 3420 - a fairly impressive little machine considering I got it in great condition for under $80 including shipping.) When I read about recovery drives, often it is stated they can be used to restore the machine to its "factory" state, software-wise, should one run into a software problem, corrupted drive, etc., not otherwise resolvable. But... This machine likely originally had WIN 7 Pro on it and then was...

I'm trying to clone a 240 GB SATA SSD to a 500 GB Crucial M.2 NVME drive, this in a Win 10 Pro Dell 3420 desktop machine; the M.2 drive was physically installed earlier this evening. The Crucial cloning software (actually Acronis) finds the new disk just fine. But, just before I ok the setup and begin the cloning, Acronis advises the new disk will be "MBR", even though most advice is to use GPT with SSD's in Windows 8, 10, and 11. Maybe it's just me being tired (long day working outside in serious heat), but I can't figure...
