I have seen recommendations for including chia seeds in the diet for a lot of health reasons. One of the biggest reasons for me is that chia has a LOT of fiber, which most people don't get enough of. So I jumped into the trend. I mainly eat them in chia "pudding" I prepare the day before. really like this for breakfast with some sliced almonds and/or berries. Any other Freepers out there on board?

Research led by Nicolas Bazan, MD, Ph.D. suggests that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) decreases an essential fatty acid, preventing the formation of a class of protective molecules and reducing repair potential. The discovery may also open new therapeutic avenues for AMD. The study shows that AMD decreases peripheral retinal docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 22:6 in rod photoreceptor cells, limiting the elongation of fatty acids to form very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs). VLC-PUFAs are precursors of elovanoids, bioactive chemical messengers made from omega-3 very- long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Elovanoids, discovered by the Bazan lab, have been shown to restore the structure and...

Chia seeds are a popular superfood but consumers may not be getting the most benefit possible out of them. Scientists have discovered the way chia seeds are eaten could determine how much or how little dietary fiber benefits people get and grinding them up could be the best way to consume them. "Chia seeds contain healthy fats, antioxidants and dietary fiber but there isn't a lot of research into how the composition of these seeds interact with gut microflora, which help to digest food," said Professor Rachel Burton. Chia seeds are often referred to as a superfood due to their...

The U.S. intelligence community claims that they jammed the spy balloon’s signals, mitigating any damage as it flew over sensitive sites. In appearances on two Sunday talk shows, House Foreign Affairs Committee chair Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) said that China sending a high-altitude spy balloon across the continental United States “was an act of espionage in plain sight” and revealed that the balloon had a greater capability than satellites to gather and collect imagery, and left open the possibility that these signals and images were still transmitted to Beijing even though US intelligence officials claim that they “mitigated” the damage. On “Sunday...

A Sacramento man was arrested after he allegedly used counterfeit $100 bills at an Auburn Home Depot – and deputies say they found even more fake cash in his car. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says, back on April 26, deputies responded to the store to investigate. Deputies say they were able to stop the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Sacramento resident Chia Saechao, as he was walking out of the store. Saechao is suspected of using five counterfeit $100 to buy items at Home Depot that day. Seven other counterfeit $100 bills were later found in his car, deputies say,...

Oil prices fell on Monday, with Brent dropping after four days of gains, as investors and traders awaited crucial talks by OPEC+ following disagreement within the group that could lead to major producers pumping up volumes to grab market share. Radio Free Asia (RFA) published an article explaining the reason that the U.S. closed China’s Consulate in Houston. The article stated that the U.S. has known that the staff members at the consulate were conducting suspicious activities, but, for a while, it did not take any action. The Second Department of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which is the PLA’s intelligence unit, sent staff members from a large network company, with fake IDs, to China’s Consulate in Houston. Those technicians used a large video platform’s backend data to identify people who might participate in the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and...

As you must know by now, the great President Obama Chia Pet scandal is national news. In a spasm of politically correct panic, Chicago-area based Walgreens stores pulled the fake terra cotta heads from shelves rather than commit corporate sacrilege. Some insist the Chia Obama is racist. Others say it's downright disrespectful to plant seeds on the messianic president's iconic dome. "People could interpret it through a political viewpoint or other viewpoints, and we want to avoid that situation," a Walgreens spokeswoman said via e-mail. "Hope this helps clear up our decision. If you have any more questions, please let...

The latest in politically-correct overreaction also could double as simple good taste on the part of Walgreens, the national discount pharmacy and convenience store. Walgreens has most of the As Seen On TV product line as well as every emolument known to man, which makes it one of the most entertaining shopping experiences outside of Spencers Gifts, or perhaps Fredericks of Hollywood for the truly garish. And if you don’t already know, that last link is NSFW, or for your marriage if your wife finds you surfing there. Hot Air is not responsible for injuries due to rolling pins, broken...

No, we can't -- buy the Chia Obama at some Walgreen's stores. Some local Walgreen's store managers are not amused by this latest offering from the creators of the Chia Pet and have pulled the item from their shelves. The story from the Fox affiliate in Tampa Bay linked above doesn't really explain why but it seems reasonable to guess that somebody somewhere was offended. Weird news reporter Jeanne Moos of CNN did a story on the Chia Obama back in January but no one seemed to notice. There's the serious-looking Determined Chia Obama, and then there's the smiling Happy...
