  • Richard Epstein: Is Comey guilty of influencing an investigation?

    06/17/2017 6:57:25 AM PDT · by Golden Eagle · 28 replies
    Newsweek ^ | June 17, 2017 | Richard Epstein
Comey’s testimony was constructed to lay the foundation for the special prosecutor to make a finding that President Trump had violated the well-established statutory prohibitions against obstruction of justice. But the obstruction charges are not confined to impolitic tweets, and, ironically, may be applicable to Comey’s own effort to influence the FBI investigation.

FreeRepublic.com | Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., was the father of the noted Supreme Court justice of the same name. Among other things, he was a poet whose most prominent work might be Old Ironsides, the poem credited with helping save the USS Constitution from being scrapped. Another of his poems was an interpretation of his grandmother's eye-witness account of the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on the 17th of June in 1775. My grandmother had this committed to memory and used to recite it to me as a child. This is that poem. Grandmother's Story of Bunker Hill Battle as She Saw...

  • Will Scalise shooting benefit Republican Handel (sympathy vote) on Tuesday

    17-June-2017 | Vanity
What is the prevailing sentiment on the effect of the shooting of Congressman Scalise on the Tuesday Special Election in Georgia? 1. No Effect 2. Sympathy vote for Handel and backlash against Democrat Ossoff. 3. Helps people to turn to the Republican candidate out of disgust for the Democrats 4. Help for Democrat Ossoff. [I personally find this very unlikely, but I could be wrong...] This is not meant to be scientific, just what the sentiments of Freepers might be. Certainly, the dirty trick of sending a package with WHITE SUBSTANCE inside probably is making this a dirty race as...
  • Do this if you really want to save Trump from impeachment

I’m going to give those claiming they want to save President Trump from a potential impeachment the benefit of the doubt, although at times like these I seriously wonder whether such benefit should be extended. I mean, when someone like myself, who didn’t even vote for Trump, seems more earnest in salvaging his presidency than those who shill for him, I have to wonder if some of these people really care about the country. Or do they just want the show (see that as clicks)? Because advising Trump to fire independent counsel Robert Mueller is arguably the single dumbest strategic...

Civil right leader Rev. Jesse Jackson paid enormous tribute to the late Martin McGuinness this week in a rousing speech to open the Museum of Free Derry. Comparing the Derryman, who died earlier this year after a short illness, to the likes of Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela, the activist laid a wreath at the Sinn Féin leader’s grave, meeting with other members of the political party to pay tribute. “It was a great honor to welcome the Rev. Jesse Jackson to Derry today, as he laid a wreath at the grave of Martin McGuinness, accompanied by Martin’s...

Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person’s breathing pauses during sleep. The pauses may be brief or last several minutes, according to information from the National Institutes of Health. Fisher, 60, suffered a medical emergency on an international flight on Dec. 23. Her mother, longtime movie star Debbie Reynolds, died the following day. ... Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher, said he was not surprised by the results... “I would tell you, from my perspective that there’s certainly no news that Carrie did drugs,” Todd Fisher said. He noted that his sister wrote extensively about her drug use, and that...

The popular Powerball lottery and Mega Millions games will drop Illinois at the end of June without a budget agreement, Illinois Lottery officials said Thursday. Concern over the state’s fiscal condition prompted the Multi-State Lottery Association to drop Powerball in Illinois, according to internal Illinois Lottery communications obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. Mega Millions also plans to drop the state unless a budget agreement comes together, state officials confirmed. Without a budget in place, the state isn’t authorized to make payments to Mega Millions or the association. Those decisions were reached at national lottery meetings held this week, Illinois Lottery...

The false narrative of Operation Trump-Russia is the latest in a long train of episodes wherein Democrats have actively defended the indefensible. Emerging in the 1820s to counter the Whigs in favor of Andrew Jackson in 1828, the Democratic Party has had an age-old tradition of fighting to advance every bad idea in American history. To their limited credit, Old Hickory's political team have had brief spurts of decency. In their early days, the Jacksonians opposed centralized government, particularly as related to economics. A late 19th-century faction called the Bourbon Democrats, among whom was President Grover Cleveland, championed fiscal responsibility....

Nancy Pelosi made a startling admission on the floor of the House Wednesday after Speaker Paul Ryan spoke about the shooting attack on Republican members of Congress and staff at a baseball practice: “To my colleagues, you’re going to hear me say something you’ve never heard me say before: I identify myself with the remarks of the speaker.” She was making a light-hearted reference to how unusual it is for her to agree with the leader of the Republican majority. She looked around as she delivered the line, expecting a laugh. It would be better if she instead looked in...

Former President Barack Obama in Montreal this week warned the world against income inequality and the concentration of wealth, all while pulling down $7,700 per minute at his $400,000 speech. Obama’s first post-presidency address on Canadian soil was loaded with anti-Trump, anti-capitalism and anti-American rhetoric. Big surprise there. Obama said that the concentration of wealth fans fears that governments exist solely to benefit the powerful, NBC reported and noted that Obama is now “striving to be an international community organizer.” He said the U.S. and other nations showed there was a better way “in creating an international order that was...

A news report today sent Washington into another spasm when it appeared that ABC and other news outlets reported that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein confirmed that he might have to recuse himself from any further involvement in the Russian investigation. While the news account has not been verified, there is actually very good reason for Rosenstein’s recusal. Moreover, any recusal by Rosenstein would add questions about the status of Special Counsel Robert Mueller himself.

The Queens woman who was offered a steak dinner after staff said her $43 million win at a slot machine was the result of a glitch is suing the casino for the entire jackpot. Katrina Bookman in August posed for a selfie at New York’s Resorts World Casino in front of the “Sphinx Slot Machine,” its screen promising her a grand prize of $42,949,672.76. When she attempted to collect her cash, however, casino employees told her she hadn’t actually won and offered her a complimentary steak dinner and $2.25 — the prize they claim her slot machine actually should have...

She’s one of the last surviving legends of Hollywood’s golden age. Her beauty and enigmatic smile saw Olivia de Havilland play alongside the biggest names of the silver screen – Errol Flynn, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift. Off screen she was romanced by the likes of Jimmy Stewart, John Huston and Howard Hughes – and reportedly turned down the advances of John F Kennedy. She won two best actress Oscars in a career spanning six decades and 49 feature films – many of them considered to be classics.
