  • NASA plans to park space shuttle Atlantis in 2008

My point, of course, is that humans explore..it is part of our genetic code. And the thrill of exploring the unknown is not satisfied by seeing pictures sent back from probes. Why else would we have journeyed to the South Pole..or climbed Mt. Everest...or have gone to the moon.

Of course, the payback in tech transfer from our space activities has more than paid for itself. In the 1970s..after the height of Apollo...the average return to the GDP by efficiencies gained from tech transfer was 23 dollars for each dollar invested in NASA. By the 1990s, that figure had dropped to 7 to 1, but still impressive. Of all of our federal investments, the NASA investment has been one of our best. Just ask any stroke victim learning how to regain their balance using machines first developed for astronauts returning from space...or a person whose life was saved by early detection from an MRI. I could go on, but I know there are people on this board who would refuse to support our human space endeavors no matter what evidence of their necessity is given...I guess they would just rather turn that part of the human journey over to the Chinese.

I just wish that robotic craft had been around in 1492...that way the Spanish royals could have sent a probe over to see what the New World looked like rather than sending humans. That certainly would have worked out better. /sarcasm off

Yes, the last time a CA city was destroyed was 1906. But, I can assure you it will happen again. And, Anchorage was pretty well destroyed in the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964.

Yes, tornadoes do take out cities...or at least have the potential to take out the economic heart of them. St. Louis' CBD was leveled twice...once in 1896..and again in 1927. These two events led to St. Louis losing its place as the "capital" of the MidWest to Chicago. Also, the focus of last night's "It Could Happen Tomorrow" on TWC was the economic damage that would be wrought to Texas and the USA if an F5 tornado went straight through downtown Dallas.

And yes, we must live in coastal areas b/c that is where maritime commerce...not to mention tourism...is inherent. Why do you think 80% of all Americans live w/in 100km of a coastline? I guess we shouldn't have built Miami...or NYC...or DC...or Galveston...or Mobile...etc...but it is a fact of human civilization that we live along the water...for many reasons.

I also wonder what natural disaster might affect your area in the future. I hope, God forbid one does, that you don't plan on applying for any FEMA grants/loans, SBA loans, etc.

I guess our President said it best:

"We're the heirs of men and women who lived through those first terrible winters at Jamestown and Plymouth, who rebuilt Chicago after a great fire, and San Francisco after a great earthquake, who reclaimed the prairie from the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Every time, the people of this land have come back from fire, flood, and storm to build anew -- and to build better than what we had before. Americans have never left our destiny to the whims of nature -- and we will not start now." -- President GWB, 9/15/05

Fine...then the next time a major West Coast city is taken out by an earthquake...or when NYC is taken out by a hurricane...or when downtown St. Louis or Chicago is flattened by a tornado....we will just let the rubble lay where it is and ignore the economic damage to this country and its citizens.

Geesh...I thought we Americans were all in this together.

I mean Kilgore is underperforming Early of 01 in a core GOP county....and Early lost by five points to Warner.

From Redstate.org: Close to projecting a win for Tim Kaine. A few more precincts are needed though. It's looking like about a five point win for him. Kilgore has underperformed Earley in some precincts in Green County, Fauquier County, and Falls Church City.

From Hotline: Another bad sign for Kilgore. With ALL precincts reporting, Richmond suburb and core GOP locality Chesterfield Co. has Kilgore winning 54%-45%. Earley won there in '01 57%-42% while losing statewide by 5%.

From Hotline: With 91% of precincts reporting, suburban Roanoke Co. in SW VA (the bedroom community around the city of Roanoke) is going to Kilgore, 53%-45%. Problem is that this is not where Kilgore needs to have his margin in such a GOP stronghold. Bush won the same locality 66%-33%.

More bad news from hotline: With just over 60% of precincts reporting, Kaine is leading Kilgore 61%-37% in NOVA's biggest locality -- Fairfax Co.

And one look "inside the numbers" tells the story. At a swing, suburban precinct, "Sideburn," just a few paces from George Mason Univ. that went for ex-AG Mark Earley over Gov. Mark Warner 927-793 in '01, Kaine has won -- 836 - 770. Earley lost Fairfax Co. by 9%.

From Hotline: Bad news for Kilgore. Two Richmond precincts that went to Bush in '04 -- one in the affluent western part of the city and one in the more middle-class south side -- are delivering their votes for their former mayor, Kaine. The first went to Bush 779-540 last year and this year has gone to Kaine 559-403. The second went to Bush 1152-1028 and this year has gone to Kaine 1015-728.

Well, this is good news...according to redstate.org, some Democrats are phoning local media to complain that their votes were not being counted by the touch screens. Dem whining is a sure sign of success!

Well..now there is this from Redstate.org:

The Hotline reports that two Democratic sources say "that turnout in African American precincts around Richmond, Roanoke and Charlotesville are higher than projections... Dems are also seeing higher than projected turnout in white NoVA precincts... GOP data suggests the opposite -- that white voters are not turning out in sufficient enough numbers in NoVA to pad Kaine's totals."

Exactly, LikeLight...I am extremely concerned about Acadiana. KPLC is still of the air...and their web site has no updated reports of damage. This is reminiscent of the lack of reports from the MS Gulf Coast in the hours after Katrina...or of the lack of reports from south Miami-Dade after Andrew. I hope things are not as bad as I fear in Calcasieu, Cameron, and Vermilion parishes.
