In an exclusive interview with HUMAN EVENTS Editor Terence Jeffrey this week, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R.) outlined the combined state-and-federal effort to rebuild the vast area in his state damaged by Hurricane Katrina, saying his government would not use the disaster as a way to gouge the taxpayers.
Barbour said he hoped the federal government would pay 90% of the tab for repairing public infrastructure in Mississippi, but estimated the total federal costs for relief, recovery and rebuilding in his state would be under $50 billion and might not be much more than $30 billion. The $250 billion aid package being recommended for nearby Louisiana by that states U.S. senators, Barbour said, seems to me very excessive.
Barbour, a native of Yazoo City, Miss., has been involved in national Republican politics since he worked in the 1968 Nixon presidential campaign. He served as political director for President Reagan and as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1994, when the Republicans took control of the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in more than 40 years.
Asked about speculation he might run for . . .

Careful there, Governor Barbour. Ol' Mary has been know to threaten violence.
This is good -
Thanks for the ping. I like governor Barbour more every day.
Actually MS has had some excellent governors since the early 90's. I know little about musgrove, but fordice was a white knight when given the choice of dowdy and mabus. The current governor actually cuts spending in numeric dollars!
Maybe Trent Lott can get federal funding for someone to paint a catfish on an airliner.
Haley Barbour BUMP.
He's definitely setting himself apart from Bush, Frist, Hastert et al. on spending. Those guys don't seem to think they can throw enough hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars at projects. Barbour is refreshing in criticizing the out-of-control spending, even more so considering he's on the receiving end.
"Mississippi needs better politicians. If some quack from Alaska can convince Congress to fund a 250 million dollar pet project, anyone can ravage Capitol Hill."
No, the rest need more honest politicians.
Very excessive? More like ludicrous!! Barbour is right, good for you Barbour.
The pet project is being paid from the Transportation trust fund not income tax money. Citizens in each state pay tax on every gallon of gas sold in their state so the quack from Alaska is just asking for their share of tax money back !
Ooh, he slapped Blanco, Nagin, Jindal, Mary & Vitter good.
Well done Governor!
I'm glad he explained the use of Federal money to clear private property too - makes perfect sense once you realize what he is talking about.
MASH HERE then click "individual". Next just enter the name "Nagin". Or enter Mary Landrieu or Mary Blanco.
These poor people have a lot of things happening. They need taxpayer money!!! /sarcasm off
BARBOUR: One of the incredible things was how soon this Mississippi spirit manifested itself. Within hours and only a couple of days you already had the vast majority of people who not only were helping themselves, but were helping their neighbors. Ordinary people performed extraordinary acts of courage and selflessness in the hours and days right after the stormand that was the rule not the exception. It was typical that people who were poor before the storm, and lost what little they had, within days were trying to do things to help their neighbors.
Might be interesting to see Gov Barbour move up to a higher office.
Don't give him any ideas.
Musgrove was in over his head --- typical democrat.
No governor is better than Haley barbour.
Forget Mary you should worry about Lott.
Thank YOU for the ping. :)
