Nault is not really all that interested in accountability. For instance - on our reserve we have been appealing for him to intervene for close to 4 years on the issue of accountability. Each year, the Bands across Canada and the DIA sign what is called a "Comprehensive Funding Agreement" (CFA) with each other - which is in essence a contract that enables the core-funding to go to the reserve. The CFA has an entire section devoted to accountability framework.

Despite our band being in breach of 7 sections of the the CFA's accountability framework, regulations and conditions for recieving funding - AND that MR.Nault knows - because I have written countless letters to him and his deputy minister - and the PM, specifically outlining these breaches... his office takes no action whatsoever.

To be honest - DIA loves it when Bands end up totally mismanaged. It allows them to exercise more control over First Nations, when the band goes tits up - costing taxpayers more money, and remedial management is ordered.

In one instance - in one region of Canada, the director general for DIA - has put 5 bands into 3rd party management. This has required that 2 accounting firms be hired to take over the band's finances. We discovered that those two accounting firms are owned by a holding company, which is owned by this regional director's wife. Cool huh?

And apparently according to the RCMP, Auditor General, and the DIA, this is all perfectly legal.

I much prefer our band's type of accountability. Raise taxes on us - without our consent, and watch the fireworks fly.

CoonCome actually has a point in his concerns about what Nault is doing. These changes will not achieve anymore accountability for Band Members, they will entrench the multi-billion dollar Indian Act Industry, and all Nault has to do - is enforce agreements and guidelines currently in place.

Instead, he is attempting to legislate away First Nations rights - much like Jean Chretien tried to do in 1969 - when he was the Monster of DIA - and which was soundly rejected

As for me - what I will be pushing for, on our reserve is to see ALL taxes lowered for natives and non-natives alike.

Another fact to digest... Of the 7.8 Billion that taxpayers are having to be extorted each year to fork out to Indian Bands - more than 40% of that money is gobbled up in Ottawa each year, at the DIA level before it even hits the Band.

And after it is filtered thru the band office - less than 23 cents on each dollar, spent by the government on Indians, actually gets spent on an actual INDIAN.

This is why the squalor exists - that and the encouragement of welfare-statism and soviet style leadership....

Mr.Nault's HELP is killing my people.

I feel like tearing my hair out - these past 5 years trying to fight it. But we are making progress. On our reserve, in any case - people are not letting things slide. In fact - the kind of resistance occuring today - to government ineptness, abuses and mismanagement is totally unparaelled anywhere in Canada.

Elizabeth came to our little tax-protest/revolt and had a blast. It was fun. More to come soon, as more protests on the reserve are schedualed for up-coming weeks.

BTW - I have another friend who once posted an interesting idea on usenet.... He feels the same way about your Social Security number andd all of these privacy invading inoventions like store cards...

That would work just as well as swapping grocery cards.

I know a group of folks in SanFrancisco that regularly swap these cards with each other once a month. The result being - they get the discounts - and the grocery store can not effectively track the purchasing patterns - since over a 12 month period the kinds of purchases range all over the place.

That might be a more effective way to protest these cards and their potential abuse of privacy issues

"Ayn Rand's book is most relevant where this article contradicts it. Note that the best people in the article -- the teachers of Dalrymple's father -- behaved altruistically.

Not so. If one finds a value, even if it is not a monetary value - and is just a good feeling in helping others - THAT is not altruism. Altruism is the moral arguement that one must not derive any satisfaction, or benefit in any fashion from the help that one gives to others. If one benefits from an altruistic deed - either by monetary value or even by simply having a warm fuzzy feeling- they have acted "selfishly" not SELF-LESSLY which is what Rand railed against. The whole culture that the author of this book is describing is the SELFLESS behaviour of ideology that promotes landscapes such as the horrifying one depicted here.

While the left can be blamed for many things - I don't think in this instance it's all their fault. More probably one of the boys or more has been sexually abused and was acting out learned behaviour from his abuser. 10 year olds are generally not this sexually aware, nor would they naturally be inclined to "experiement" in such a fashion - unless they had been sexualized prior to the experience. Although I do find it stunning that this went on IN a classroom - itself, and gives just one more arguement for homeschooling.

    I concur...
I wonder how many people have been diagnosed and are undergoing treatment, and worst case scenario NOT being able to talk about it - for "National Security Reasons"

I mean Hell... Brokaw and Company sat on this for 11 days... Now we find out - but only that she is fine... Who else was tested, treated or perhaps is currently sick?

And if i hear ONE MORE BOZO say "isolated incident" - I think I will scream.

I wish I could trust the US Government to tell the truth - but after 8 years with the Lyin'B****rd in the Oval Office, and watching the Cover-Up Kids in action, I can't. Its pretty sad when you believe the National Enquirer more than you do the Highest elected officials in the land.. And that goes for Canada too - although I've been tracking this up here and not even got so much as a whiff of an Anthrax infection scenario

If people KNOW whats happening - they can adjust themselves to it.. All the secrecy and the half-truths are stirring up MORE panic and hysteria - imho.

Question for the Anthrax and Biology experts:

If this anthrax in Florida is somehow genetically altered, or modified - would that make detection harder?

My boyfriend lives in Florida - and he was here in Canada with me - and due to fly home the DAY of the attacks - but because we found out about it before trundling him off to the ferry - to Seattle, he was not on any of the plane. Frankly - I haven't gotten much sleep since then... and even less since he returned home - and EVEN less than that since the Anthrax story broke last week.

No - we are not buying gas-masks, nor stocking up on anti-biotics or anything like that... but for the past 4 days - I almost dread logging on to free republic to see more reports of this situation... and yet I feel compelled to - since News breaks faster here than anywhere - and it's nice to know other people share these concerns.

    Thanks

Taunting, Teasing and Jeering at the US - Makes Me Want to Puke.

I know that there are some people who are probably sick of the constant and unrelenting coverage and commentary of the Sept 11th Terrorist attack in the United States. It has dominated the news and our coffee-shop, or dinner time conversations for nearly 3 weeks and in some ways, like I pointed out last week there is nothing new to say about Death. It's been said, and is being said over and over and over again.

I do have a point to make though - before I leave this subject alone and carry on with the business of my usual flogging of various complaints about aspects of Canadian Government and Band Government abuses and deceptions.

If I hear one more idiot in the news or around town spew more of this ridiculous "apologist" blame-game nonesense about the victimization of America for it's foreign policies I think I will scream. Maybe growing up with a military father, I never had much of a chance to develop a Kumbaya, lets all hold hands and "touchy-feely each other's pain" approach to world study. I have always been non-plussed at the sight of retro-hippie-esque GenXers spewing stuff about Mao or Marx and tossing collectivst ideas about like they are some sort of party-favour.

"Are you people NUTS?" has been what I say to myself when I hear people my age wax poetic about the wonders of Stalinism and/or nihilism. They think they are so sophisticated, when in actual fact, they are simply silly and in these recent instances, dangerously so.

Make no mistake about it. The people who perpetrated this attack in North America are the absolute logical conclusion of that thread of political theory. In fact, from what I understand of the Taleban regime - they bear an eerie resemblance to Pol Pot and the Khemer Rouge. You tell me - those of you, that perhaps think I am out of line here.. Does executing 8 year old girls in sports stadiums, for the crime of attempting to learn how to read, filled with cheering Afghan citizens strike you as "innocent" and "reasonable" response to the so called "American Imperialism" and mistakes of Foreign policy. What about beating Afghan men to death with electrical cables for wearing "Western Haircuts".? I don't think so.

The ruling elite in Afghanistan bury women suspected of adultery up to their shoulders before stoning them to death. They kill suspected homosexuals by collapsing walls onto them. They have driven millions of desperate fellow Afghans into exile, and leave the remainder to face destitution and starvation. Their honored accomplice is Osama bin Laden, who for the last ten years or so has been telling everyone who will listen that the United States is the source of all wickedness and he intends to destroy it. In some ways, I would liken the ethical approach to "Foreign Policy" by bin Laden, as being similar to a doomed AIDS patient attempting to sleep with, infect and kill as many people as possible -to share their bitterness misery and pain with on the way out of shuffling this mortal coil. I would agree that it's been downright stupid for our government and the US governments attempt to prop up various regimes around the world. And indeed, now we know better, in the sense that you can bet your bottom dollar that some of the arsenals that will be used in defence of the Taleban, came direct from -and in fact in some cases was "made in the USA." Thats gonna hurt. Its probably going to hurt more, KNOWING that US Foreign AID and policy MADE this kind of defence of the Taleban easier for them - but America is a pretty straight forward lot. They will take their lumps over that and move on - and kick ass anyways. That's what's good about being the only true super-power left in the world.

So hear this, you GenXer Hippie nitwits!!!... There is only ONE language that the terrorist Al Queda and Taleban will understand at that point. That language is sheer unrelenting brute force and its destructive display in technicolor in-your-face surround sound demonstration. The message "If you kill people - you will be killed - full stop." Must be driven home.

We know for a fact that bin Laden managed to get as few as 15 young men from his Al Queda network to walk on board those airliners and blow themselves and the occupants of the WTC and the Pentagon to smithereens. When people have reached a point in their ideology that the only thing they want to do - is to hurt others, while they die - then diplomacy and "economic sanctions" and playing patty-cakes with the UN bunch is simply not going to cut it.

I would humbly suggest that we only KNOW of 15 such people in bin Laden's regime for sure. We don't know how many more terrorists are wandering around in North America with the same ideology and goals in mind and the possible means to carry them out.

You better believe that we are facing some dark times ahead. I am almost 85% convinced that when the US strikes back, as it must - there will be a retaliatory act by the remaining terrorists in North American and Europe, and it won't be pretty. In fact - for years now, according to reports from the BBC and defected Afghani scientists the Taleban has been purchasing the components for biological, chemical and nuclear weapons.

We already know that these mo'fos are willing to die to hurt as many people as possible to make their point. Its no small stretch of the imagination to consider that all bin Laden has to do is give the word to even just 20 of his followers on North American soil to infect themselves with small pox or some other genetically altered nasty and then walk around for the 10 days infecting everybody around them. We won't even know when we have been hit - until hundreds are dying in agony. And by then it will be too late. All the chanting and apologies and apathy in the world won't erase the consequences.

In light of that - which is actually the LEAST of our worries - anybody who proposes "All we are saying.. Is Give Peace a Chance" - is a damn fool, and I take it very personally when they are attempting to interfere with the proper course of Action by the US Military to wipe out the people who are responsible for the 9-11 attacks and the attacks to come.

If you can't stomach the sight of just and righteous revenge for the wanton destruction of thousands of innocent Americans - then Shut the hell up, and just get out of their way. Do you Actually need to be personally attacked, or be directly affected by the madness of bin Laden before you realize what your appeasment is making possible?

Well I don't. Whatever the American's must do to keep themselves and North America safe at this point - my support goes to them.
