Are There Any Movies For Children Anymore?

My wife and I just returned from Blockbuster where we were looking for something we could watch with our nine year old son. I am not a prude, but I prefer my son not watch films with profanity and certainly without nudity or sexual content. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of films for rent there was almost nothing suitable. We've seen most of Disney's stuff and he is a bright and mature boy for his age, so it doesn't have to be animated (in fact, I'm not crazy about animated movies) nor does it have to be a movie geared for little children. I just want something where they aren't swearing every other word and they're not parading around the house naked discussing their private parts. Even an occasional cuss would be alright ( I cluck my tongue to show my disapproval) as long as it's not the "F" word or something as bad. But, holy cow, there's nothing there!

Can any of you good folks here recomend something for us to watch? Or do you know of any web sites that maybe could help. I feel so bad for my son to go in there and leave empty handed. Any help you can give us would be appreciated.

Anything made before 1967. After that, the pickings are slim.

This is a great site that should help you a lot. It is a site specifically for parents to find out about screenings of new movies and old alike.

ScreenIt.Com

You're right! I said to my wife in Blockbuster, "There's nothing newer than 20 years old", but I think you're closer to the mark!

"Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring"

We "found" a great little movie at Blockbuster called, "Dancer, Texas"

The Texas in the title caught our interest but the movie was really nice..... set in the very rural Big Bend area of Texas - it is the story of a group of boys who are graduating from High School (5 total boys in the class) and are planning to leave town to seek fame and fortune!

It is sweet, and VERY West Texas.... down to a scene where two ranchers are visiting - leaning against a building and probably say 10 words to each other - total - and then say, "Nice visitin with ya".. and walk away.... LOL... I swear I have seen that exact scene in real life!

There is only one scene - one boy has a drunk Dad and he has shown up with a woman - one scene shows a little skin as the boy sees the woman in his Dad's bed.....

Other than that - I can not recall anything at all that would be inappropriate for your son....

It is touching, and sweet - a great cast - and very typical of small towns in Texas.....

Count of Monte Cristo.

There is no cussing, no sex, no nudity(that I was aware of), very mild violence, and a good moral.

A few suggestions:

Fly Away Home. Cute kid, cute geese, entertaining story.

Anastasia. Animated. Not historically accurate, but fairly entertaining.

Iron Will. Dogsled race; gritty kid competes against all odds. Great cinematography.

No there is not. Sorry just forget it..

I have taken my Grandchildern to G movies and they had talk of sex and other body functions.Sometimes the children in the movie were rude and poorly behaved.....Ahhhhhh then step up to PG 13 and see some nudity and sexual suggestions ( sometimes this grandma shakes her head at it)

When I go to an R rated movie I come prepare for it..and sometimes I am pleasenly surprised that it was just a PG 13 + a little..

Focus on the family has a web site that has an excellent reviewing system they will tell you exactly what might offen that is in there and then you can decide

Last summer they gave one movie a mixed review because they had several references to bowel movements..Hey my grandkids think thats funny..so we went without a worry

But you do have to check...If I can find the link I will give it to you

BTW for older kids 13 + The Count of Monte Cristo is great we all loved it..

My boys practically wore out "The Terminator" with Arnold Swartzenheager. I preferred the action movies as they got older. I'm thankful they weren't into horror or "stupid" comedys.

Mostly though, I tried to keep em busy building stuff and doing things outside. They are a rare-breed in this day and age. I'm very pleased and proud at how they turned out.

My kids love Godzilla movies. The Beach movies of the 60's were fun.
