Sears had a public announcement. They prohibited the flags because they were stuck on windows and might obstruct the drivers' visions. However, they decided instead to have flags painted on the exterior of all their vans.

I actually received a response. It didn't say much, but thanked me for supporting them in their decision.

Excuse me please. The response I received was regarding an email supporting the company for withdrawing advertising for Maher's show.

I got a response today, but it looked generic. Said they were originally concerned about the driver's vision being impaired and that needed to be worked out. I didn't like that answer, anybody that can't attach a small flag symbol to a truck without impairing his vision should not be driving anyway. I was even madder but didn't respond. Yet.

I did from the store manager I delivered the letter to. He said he understood and supported me and told me about the corporate decision to withdraw support from Maher. I told him he gets all my business and turned around and spent $300 in the auto shop and Craftsman section within a week.

Let me say this about Sears....

At the HQ in Hoffman Estates, there are two big, beautiful American flags hanging from the catwalks in the big four story atrium that is the center of the HQ complex.

All throughout the Hoffman Estates complex, in cublicals and pasted to various windows, are the Stars & Stripes. Some of these were obviously printed on the company's Tektronix color laser pritners. But no one cares, and no one has been told to take them down.

Within days of Sept 11th, Sears was handing out American Flag buttons to all of its employess, with instructions to actually wear the silly things.

The day after 9-11, Sears had an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the corporate HQ. The drive was open to all employess, plus anyone else who wanted to come by. Far more people were turned away than gave blood due to a lack of manpower on the part of those taking the blood.

On the National Day of Prayer declared by President Bush, approximately one thousand employess in the Hoffman Estates HQ gathered around the flag pole just outside the main entrance for an improptu prayer service sponsered by the Associate Christian Fellowship.

Sears is putting American flag decals on all of its service trucks, and is making sure all of the associates working for Sears know about it. They featured a picture of a technician placing the decal on the front of his truck on the home page of the Sears Intranet site. The decal is somewhere between 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 inches in size. Big enough to be seen.

While there is plenty to criticize about Sears, (and I could go on for pages listing all the things they do wrong...) at least they are doing the best they can to be supportive of employee's displays of patriotism, and the company has certainly taken the intiative to make their own patriotism be known.

So how do I know all this? I've been working at the Hoffman Estates HQ for the past five years...

In Canada, Sears in our home town has a big sign saying "We Will Accept WTC Victim Donations AND MATCH THEM!" THis strikes me as strange considering this thread. MWW

(The Bill Maher flap)

I don't think I ever heard back from Sears, but I DID get a very nice email thanking me for my patriotism from the CEO of Fed Ex. It was a form letter, so I figured he needed to send a bunch.

I got his email address from another freeper who worked for Fed EX.

OK, I'm happy to hear this. I'll go back to shopping at Sears (if the market ever goes up!)
