Here's where President Bush got his marching orders: "One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998 "If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." - President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998 "Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the...

As is well known by now in Catholic blogdom, we are waiting for the Sunday commencement of a series in the Dallas Morning News on the latest investigations into a hitherto unexplored facet of the clergy sexual abuse scandal. This morning, DMN reporter Bruce Egerton was featured on National Public Radio, offering a low-key overview of what is coming. For over a year, he and a colleague have been exploring the ramifications on the Scandal of the international nature of the Church. He has discovered hundreds of cases of priests who were accused of sexual abuse -- even convicted --...

Romer" - Richard L. Kent, J.D. Vol. 3 No. 2: January/February 1999 Roads to RomerHow Moral Teaching Became a 'Fit of Spite' by Richard L. Kent, J.D., Founding Editor, Eutopia The devil has the broadest perspectives for God; therefore he keeps so far away from God -- the devil being the most ancient friend of wisdom.... 1 -- Friedrich Nietzsche I. IntroductionIn the happy days of the Summer of 1997, in which "the winter of our discontent [was] made glorious summer,"2 where the miraculously peaceful surrender of the last great enemy of American democracy was almost already forgotten, where the Dow...

A Superior Township parks commissioner and his roommate were in Detroit police custody Monday, suspected of vandalizing the Joe Louis fist statue in downtown Detroit and leaving the photos of two slain Detroit police officers on the monument's base. Police said Monday they were unsure whether the white paint splattered on the sculpture early Monday symbolized racism or some other type of political statement against violence in Detroit. [Excerpted as I think the Freep is a WashPost paper.]

(Before beginning, please track down and play Dr. Tom Lehrer’s classic song ‘National Brotherhood Week’, which should put you in the proper mood for the following short essay on an essential subject.) Many Freepers have little to no understanding of those ethnic struggles arising in the former Yugoslavia, or why the US is still babysitting there. I have therefore endeavoured to write a short essay discussing the differences between each of the ethnic groups, and terminology best used to describe them. YUGOSLAVIA. The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was created out of the shards of surrounding empires in 1918....

Power shift in Europe, deadlock in US By Anatole Kaletsky, The Times January 05, 2004 Starting in Europe, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder may well lose his job. Because of the soaring euro, the German economy is certain to remain very weak even as the rest of the world recovers. Meanwhile, Schroder's Social Democrats will face defeat in no fewer than 13 regional and local elections this year – and in Germany's postwar history, leaders have usually changed as a result of internal party putsches, not general elections. French President Jacques Chirac will remain in office, but severe losses in municipal...

Cult leader's molestation trial could create circus By MARK NIESSE EATONTON, GA (AP) -- After months of unorthodox tactics and protests by followers dressed as Egyptian pharaohs, mummies and birds, Nuwaubian cult leader Malachi York's child molestation case finally heads to trial Monday. And officials are doing all they can to keep the courtroom from turning into a circus. "It's like living in bizarro world," said Frank Ford, an attorney who has argued with the Nuwaubians in court. "They cannot stand being told no, and they cannot stand being ignored." York, who moved the quasi-religious United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors...

Vatican slams handling of Sauron A top Roman Catholic official has attacked the way Sauron, the Lidless Eye, was treated by his Gondorian overlords, saying he had been dealt with like an animal. Cardinal Renato Martino said he had felt pity watching through a Palantir pictures of "the former, pathetic Dark Lord, [the military] looking at his empty carapace as if he were a mere suit of armor". The cardinal, a leading critic of the Gondorian-led war in Ithilien, said he hoped the capture would not make matters "worse". A senior Gondorian official has defended the decision to show the...

(Item: The New York Times wasted valuable space giving still-living Useful Idiot Eric Hobbsbawm the journalistic equivalent of the Full Monica by giving him some 2000 words of a glowing portrait, in spite of the fact that he spent his entire 86 years serving Satan in the form of the Communist Party. What if they'd come out of the closet and painted a portrait of a Nazi with the same glow....?) A Nazi Life With No Apology By SARAH LYAR LONDON, Aug. 22 — Born in 1923, the year of the Munich Putsch, the historian Eric Schweinbaum has lived through...

An emerging breed of man, the metrosexual, shows his soft, sensitive, feminine side. By Richard Trubo Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario, MD on Monday, July 28, 2003 WebMD Feature There, deep in the hair-care aisle, carefully selecting the product du jour, or in the salon having his nails buffed to the perfect shine while checking out the latest fashion magazines -- it's not a bird, not a gay man, it's a metrosexual! And judging by the popularity of the new TV program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, many more once slovenly men want to join the ranks of this new...

Oregon Magazine "Ken Burns' "Congress" May 26, 2003, 9:00 PM -- The most powerful accomplishment of tonight's segment of the PBS program, Ken Burns' "Congress," is that Mr. Burns managed to describe the period of official racism in America from just prior to the Civil War to the post-Reconstruction era, without once identifying a pro-slavery congressman or senator as a Democrat. When the Republicans outlawed slavery (which is exactly what actually happened), guess who walked out of the House and the Senate. Their party begins with the letter "D." Guess who after the Civil War worked to disembowel the black...
