I think you have never lived with the problem or you wouldn't sound like a bleeding heart liberal. Do you really think taxpayers should be providing:

    1. free education for illegal aliens 2. free medical care for illegal aliens 3. various state welfare benefits.

Do you like your property taxes being increased while the employers of illegal aliens enjoy the benefits of hiring illegals? (not paying the high wages they used to pay American workers, not providing health insurance that American workers demanded, thus dumping it on taxpayers)

Granted some Mexicans may be hard workers but it is also true that many are paying the coyote (guide) by hauling drugs on their backs as they enter this country illegally. Some never get an honest job, committing crimes instead. We taxpayers are paying to house a considerable number of illegals in our jails and prisons. In California, they are near 25% of the incarcerated. It would be nice if Mexico would house their own criminal countrymen but the chances are too great that bribery of Mexican officials would result in freedom for many prisoners.

Those who think that giving legal status to some illegals will solve the illegal problem or gain Republican votes just doesn't know what is going on. Who do you think is competing with illegals for jobs? Ask many LEGAL HISPANICS!! Too bad that stupid Karl Rove can't figure that out.

Unlike Karl Rove, I have actually talked to Hispanics who deeply resent the competition! And they won't look favorably on Bush or the Democrats favoring illegals. And by the way, these are CITIZENS who vote, unlike the first and second generation Hispanics who have a poor voting record (many are not citizens!!)

What you and others quick to make a deal do not seem to realize is this:

    (1) legalizing some illegals now will NOT DISCOURAGE more from entering illegally (proof is how well the 1986 amnesty prevented more illegal entrants)

    (2) Legalizing ANY illegals is admitting that we have lost the desire and/or ability to control our own borders

    (3) It is not true that illegals are only doing jobs that Americans won't do. The truth is illegals are paid far less, often have no employer-provided health insurance which puts that burden on the taxpayers, and work in unsafe work conditions, fearing to complain for fear of being deported. Look at the construction industry. Americans used to make good wages in those jobs. Now they have been replaced by illegals. Same thing is true of meat packing industry, chicken processing industry, etc. Those injured get sent home: saves on the workmen's comp. claims!!

This nation won WW II. For heavens' sake, we should be able to beat Mexico at this game! Of course, it would be easier if our President and Republican leadership had some cajones!

A determined group of Anaheim citizens with the aid of a councilman petitioned the "suits" in Washington and got permission to have an INS agent stationed in the Anaheim, CA jail.

Originally we asked INS to train a select number of local police to access their database via computer at the jail to check the legal status of ALL ARRESTEES. INS nearly had a stroke, so we said "okay give us an agent."

Why check residency upon arrest? Because when the Anaheim cops took the perp to court, the judge often let them out on their own recognizance (trust them to show up for trial without posting bail) That was a big failure! especially when they were here illegally.

Now the judge is advised in court "this guy's here illegally." The judge naturally holds them over in jail until trial. Many of the arrests were for drunken driving, burgulary, and sex offenses. By the way one of the illegals selling drugs in the city park was a RUSSIAN!! So EVERYONE IS CHECKED! NO PROFILING!

I think this is a practical approach: Make INS share their database and select certain cops to be allowed access. (Every shift commander and his relief man for example.) By the way, attach a salary increase for those qualified to check residency status and watch the cops "volunteer" for this new duty!

The pilot of the plane that crashed into the Pentagon grew up in my home town and was an avid Angels' fan according to his younger brother in a recent local news article published in the Orange County Register. They were planning to attend an Angels game during a layover after Sept. 11 (forget the date). So this French author is a LIAR!! NANCY, Anaheim, CA.

Sorry but HELL would freeze over before I would join the Libertarian Party. They believe in OPEN BORDERS! That may have worked in the 19th century when the western half of the US had little population and NO WELFARE.

Today our immigrants quickly learn about all the goodies available to them. I see it every day at the grocery store. Smartly dressed young women towing three little ones and handing over food stamps to the clerks. My husband and I decided to stop at two kids as we knew we could only afford to feed, clothe, educate, etc that many! I always said when the Pope bought the groceries, I would think about having more kids.

Perhaps I need to remind you that Congresswoman Sanchez (her maiden name by the way which she found convenient to use for political purposes though she is married- didn't even hyphonate it like many "liberated" women do) had nearly 1000 votes in her first bid for Congress cast by ILLEGAL VOTERS. Some were taking citizenship classes and had their voter registration cards filled out for them BEFORE THEY WERE ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER.(or so the story went and the Republican DA used that as an excuse not to prosecute the poor misguided ones.)

Even after the above election fiasco, our county Registrar of Voters is such a gutless wonder, she wouldn't make an effort to clean up the rolls. She seemed to look the other way unless embarrassed into it and then limited her efforts to only the specific incident- like when a "registered" person refused to serve on a jury, stating "I AM NOT A CITIZEN!"

Much to my disgust, 245 (I) passed. Much to my disgust, there are Freepers that do not see why this is wrong. If you don't think it is possible to deport illegals, then you have forgotten your history. Look up "Operation Wetback" and President Eisenhower. He sent them all home! The difference. He was a West Point graduate who loved his country and honored his Presidential oath. Unlike George W. Bush. (Regretfully I voted for him to rid the country of the Clinton-Gore disgrace.)

245 i is AN ACT OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ALL LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. I have one in my family. I know before she entered this country to marry my grandson, she had to (1) provide a police report from her home country showing she was a law-abiding citizen not wanted for any crime; (2) provide a physical examination proving she had no communicable disease or major health problem that would burden this country's health care services; and (3) provide a financial sponsor who would ensure she would NOT become a welfare user.

Compare this to the illegal who is allowed to become legal under 245i. No physical, no police report from the home country, and no financial sponsor. So this newly legalized resident could have tuberculosis which is not being treated, could be wanted for a felony in his home country and apply for welfare as soon as he has his green card!

Do you know that EMPLOYERS can sponsor an illegal for this change in status under 245I? So the same employers who have been using illegal aliens can now help them change their status? So we are not only rewarding illegals who enter our country and use fraudulent documents, we are rewarding employers who have been employing them!

If you think this has not affected you, ask yourself who do you think is using your local emergency room for free health care (paid by your taxes). All the illegally employed who do NOT have health insurance!!

We are denying our elderly a drug benefit on Medicare and ask them to pay an ever increasing premium, regardless of their income level, while we give free health care at our emergency rooms to illegals and our county runs "free clinics" for them (paid for by us taxpayers).

My husband's Blue Cross Senior Secure Plan requires him to pay $60 per drug ($60 for his BP med, $60 for his Lipitor) but we give medicine to illegals free.

Some country. Our President is nothing more than country club RINO. He claims to be a conservative but he is not. Conservatives obey and enforce the laws of our land. They do not undermine our Constitution. I am not impressed by his public prayers or his support of the military. He is doing little to provide security here at home! NO SECOND TERM!!

Simon is Vice Pres of Catholic Charities in LA. He reports to Cardinal Mahoney who avidly supports the illegals. When Simon was confronted on a local LA radio station, he took the usual "immigration is a federal responsibility" BS.

Why did I vote for him? My choice was Bill Jones who did not have the bucks for TV ads (which is the info source for the idiot Joe Sixpacks of this state). I loathed Riordan. He is not only avidly pro-illegal alien, he is also for gun control. He didn't do much for the LA economy despite his promises.

I was mad as hell at Bush for pushing Riordan. If he had stayed out of the race, we might have had a chance. By the way, speculation about why Bush picked Riordan was because Bill Jones had supported McCain in the 2000 primary. So Bush's people wanted to punish him.

The BS that only a "moderate" can win in California is just that!! Peter Wilson became the governor by supporting Prop.187 (would have stopped tax payer support of illegals going to our k-12 schools, getting free medical care, and would have clamped down on fraudulent document makers!!

Unfortunately the idiot Republican who followed him (Lungren) was like Bush (making excuses for illegals)and he turned off the conservative base in disgust. So Davis won! (He also had the monetary support of the big gambling casinos on the Indian reservations in CA, as well as the teachers' unions, and the govt employee unions.

I am also tired of hearing how illegals are doing the jobs Americans won't do. That line of BS ignores the jobs in construction done by illegals that used to be done by unionized workers who got good wages and benefits until the subcontractors busted the unions by reducing wages, working straight time without overtime regardless of the hours worked. Add to that the reduction in safety on the job. You have probably seen Hispanics buried in trenches that were not properly supported.

The BS also applies to the hotel jobs now done by illegals that used to be done by black American CITIZENS. Again the same tricks used: cut the wages so that only 12 illegals crammed into a one bedroom apt.can afford to do the work. The hotels hire middle men to hire the illegals to escape the laws regarding hiring illegals. Once the Hispanics are the only ones working in the hotels, here come the Hispanic run union repres demanding better wages. Same thing with the janitors who clean big business buildings at night!

I can think of many jobs that used to be done by Americans until the wage busting by illegals, together with the unsafe working conditions, drove them away. Americans are NOT afraid to work.

George Bush Jr. apparently doesn't know what happened after the 1986 amnesty made many illegals legal. They stopped working at those crummy unsafe jobs for slave labor wages! What happened? MORE illegals were imported to take the jobs!

As a Republican voter, I have always voted even when I felt I was voting for the lesser of two evils who happened to be a Republican. This works when you vote for the state or federal legislature as this determines which party will be in control of the Assembly, Senate, etc.

In the case of governor, I have to ask myself who is more likely to control our leftist socialistic legislature. At this point, I doubt Riordan would oppose them. He impresses me as being too eager to be seen as a "nice guy, loved by all." I think his donations in the past support this.

As for his pro or anti-abortion stance, I don't trust him to be a principled individual on this issue. I am not rabidly anti-abortion as some on this site but do get disgusted when I see it being used as an alternative to birth control by girls too ignorant or lazy to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

I am more concerned about his stands on guns (he thinks we should be licensed like we are licensed to drive cars) and immigration. (He supported a rabid leftist to succeed him as mayor. Thankfully he lost, stalling the total takeover of LA by illegals.)

By the way, while CA is suffering from the recession and will have to borrow to pay our bills, our legislature gives illegal aliens the right to attend our colleges and pay "in-state tuition." Gray Davis went along with this but Riordan said NOTHING. Never mind that a 1996 federal law said you cannot discriminate against US citizens in favor of illegal aliens!

If Riordan really was a Republican, he would be using this against Davis! Doesn't anyone care that the Democrats are violating federal law? (By the way, the illegals in NY just lost a case on this issue and the judge cited the 1996 law!)

Riordan supported a leftist Hispanic Democrat to succeed him for Mayor of LA. Thankfully Hahn beat him. Hahn is a white liberal who got into office on the strength of his father's record. (Daddy really helped the blacks of LA. He was the type of councilman who listened to his constituents.) Unfortunately sonny is an opportunist who is now killing his support among many blacks! So I expect the Mexicans to elect one of their own the next time around. Illegal aliens voting doesn't bother them. In fact they wanted non-citizens to vote in LA school elections and might have gotten away with it if the blacks hadn't raised a big stink!

As for Riordan, I have not seen anything positive he ever did for LA. He was your typical ribbon-cutting, take credit for the work of others politicians!

During Riordan's reign as Mayor of LA, W. Hubble (former Clinton buddy) got a "consulting job" in LA but nobody could figure out what he did to earn the money. Probably a way to get the taxpayers to contribute to his attorney fees. (He was under investigation then but not yet indicted.

Riordan talked a lot about education even though he had NO power to make any changes as that is not the Mayor's responsibility. He did allow his buddies to build a sports center and tie up streets for months, killing the nearby small businesses!

He did nothing to get the permanent "homeless" from camping in city parks! Like getting many old vacant buildings converted to single occupant rooms paid from the federal checks sent to all these "handicapped" (read drunks and addicts) Compare his inactivity to one of our local policemen who had free fertilizer (donated by company) delivered to the parks and arranged for it to be distributed. Gone were the druggies! Even they could not stand the stench!

At least Wilson had the guts to support Prop.187 in contrast to that gutless Lungren! Prop.187 was a protest by Ca taxpayers who were fed up paying to educate and medicate ILLEGAL ALIENS!!

I don't know about you but I got fed up seeing my taxes go up every year despite the recession which made my house's actual value go down! Now every school in our district has most of the playground occupied by portable classrooms.

Why? Because both Republican and Democratic politicians are falling all over themselves catering to the Hispanic voters while they ignore the white and black voters. They do this by failing to inforce our laws.

The immigration act of 1996 said local police officers are to aid INS. Yet the LA city councl votes to instruct their police officers NOT help INS.

By the way, NOT all Hispanics like this obvious pandering. Some of them are just as fed up as I am. They mainly the second and third generation who have been around to see the changes brought to our communities by the flood of illegals.

Banks may be private businesses but their account holders rely on federal insurance to avoid losing their funds if the banks collapse. So if the federal gov't wants a SSN in exchange for offerring this insurance, how is the bank getting around the requirement? Or are these poor slobs NOT getting insured accounts?

Suppose the FBI needs to trace the funds of a specific account because they suspect illegal activity (drug funds, funding terrorists, etc.) how do they trace without an SSN? I am sure Mexico will give the FBI access to the matricula database. Yeah, sure!

One thing for sure, we have a better idea of how much money is being drained out of this country. Also this is going to hurt the companies who were charging for funds transferred to Mexico if the banks give them all ATM cards which family members in Mexico can use. Wonder how long it will be before we hear of holdups at Mexican ATM's?

Also the number of matriculas issued gives us a better idea of how many illegals we have.

If Bush continues to pander to leftist Hispanics on immigration issues (amnesty, worker program, refugee status), he may get a big surprise in 2004. Many Americans are getting fed up!

Currently getting a lot of attention are the various states considering granting drivers licenses to illegal aliens.

Another issue that is hot is granting reduced in-state tuition (previously reserved only for legal state residents)to illegal aliens going to our state colleges which are supported by taxpayers. Meanwhile out of state CITIZENS and immigrants who use legal means to enter the US are to be charged full tuition!!

Bush's people are backing Riordan for CA governor! That man is left of Gray Davis, our current governor. At least Gray Davis is not gunhow for gun control! And has dragged his tail on giving in on the licenses for illegals by coming up with more requirements for them to be granted.

Name a leftist issue? Riordan supports it! Oh yes this Catholic who donates money to Pro-life causes is really pro-abortion. He is also in favor of granting welfare to illegal aliens.

I am a life-long Republican but I am getting fed up. The Democrats run a plantation where they promise goodies to various special interest groups to get their votes.

The Republicans roll over for donors who want cheap labor and open borders. They don't see the harm to our country of letting illegal aliens come here to flood the job market, thus lowering wages and making it harder to raise a family. I remember the day that a blue collar worker could support his family and his wife would be free to stay home to raise the kids. That was when kids weren't taking guns to school to kill their peers over some hurt feelings.

The Libertarians also want open borders but claim they won't give any welfare goodies to them! They want to end the war against drugs, comparing it to prohibition against alcohol and what harm that caused. As an RN, I have seen plenty of drunks coughing up their bloody guts after alcohol had ruined their insides. So don't tell me about how much better the drug situation would be without some restrictions.

I am finding it harder and harder to vote and I have done so every election since I turned 21.

Now if Bush would only get tough and appoint a hardliner as ambassador to MEXICO! In case anyone wants to know, Mexico was very slow and wishy washy to support us after Sept.11. The leftist Mexicans are so afraid of going to war, they did not want anything to do with promising to help us fight terrorism. That is in contrast to the many local Hispanics who proudly displayed Old Glory on their cars, etc.

Do you guys know that Mexico is handing out ID cards to their citizens who are here in the US? That way the local cops don't automatically toss them in jail when they are unable to produce an ID. Of course immigrants here LEGALLY would have their green card and likely have a drivers license.

While Simon claims to be against illegal immigration, he has funneled lots of cash to the local Cathothic Charities group, which like our liberal Cardinal Mahoney, believe in aiding and abetting illegals.

I watched the GOP debate and was very unimpressed by Simon. He has lots of money to spend so those who can't stand Riordan think Simon is a better choice.

Jones has markedly improved his public skills (comparing the debate to speeches he gave when the campaign began). He is the ONLY ONE of the three who publically supported Prop. 187.

By the way, I cannot understand why Republicans run like scardey cats from Prop.187. The voters merely said "We are tired of our tax money being used for the education and health care of ILLEGAL ALIENS!!

They fell for the argument that the Supreme Court had ruled that they had to be educated. What the Supremes actually said in the Texas case was "the state must educate all children regardless of legal residency status unless the state can prove it is a financial burden." Seems to me the people in CA finally said "we feel it has become a financial burden."

What was actually happening was the descrimination of CA ciitizens. More money per student was being spent on illegals (because they could not be taught in English and classroom size was lower). If you are a CA resident whose child speaks English, you get fed up when you see all the extra money spent on illegal aliens who can't. That led to Prop.187.

Unfortunately our Democrat governor and Democrat AG successfully blocked taking the case to a higher court after a local federal judge decided it was unconstitional. No where was any group with big bucks challenging Davis, etc. in court. No "friend of the court" appealed the case, so it died, despite passing with 63% of the voters in favor.

You guys should know that Tancredo is really devoted to doing something about the illegal alien mess! We CAN NOT afford to lose him. He rallied enough support to shoot down the Republican leaders who were going to bow to Bush's plan to make 245(i) a permanent law. For those of you who don't know what that is, 245 (i) was part of the Immigration Law that allowed an ILLEGAL alien living in the US to apply to change status to legal (usually because they had married a legal alien.) They paid INS a $1000 fee for the privilege.

Back in 1996, Congressman Lamar Smith of Texas had changed the law to require them to go to their native country and apply, as well as get a police report from their home country and a physical exam. He didn't think we were being fair to those entering the country legally.

245(i)did not require them to go home, get the police report or get a physical, or have a financial sponsor to keep them off the welfare rolls.

Compare that to someone applying outside the US for legal entry to the US. They must get the police report to show they are not wanted for a crime or have a history of criminal activity, and a physical exam to show they do not have a communicable disease (many have active TB) or a major health problem that would be a burden on the US. Also they must have a financial sponsor to prevent them from going on welfare, get food stamps, etc.

(I know as my grandson recently married a Canadian girl. INS didn't want her to be an indigent but did not grant her permission to work until she submitted another application and more fees! They also insisted she had to be here several months before she could apply for the work permit! Incedentally the paperwork was the same.(police report, physical, financial sponsor.) We think INS just does that to get more money and keep another employee busy. They could have granted her the work permit at the same time she got permission to enter, even if she paid a separate fee for the work permit.)

So we need Tancredo in Congress. He really cares about cleaning up this whole immigration mess!

So glad you piped up! As a retired critical care nurse, I am angry about this article. As I am sure you are aware, "sinus" refers to the origin of the electrical impulse which stimulates the heart muscle to contract. The sinus node is the normal location, being in the upper right chamber of the heart. So the President's heart beat originates in the NORMAL site.

So the reporter who thinks he's made a big discovery is an idiot. All he did was "discover" the medical term that can be applied to a normal situation in well-conditioned athletes. He is implying he's discovered an abnormality only explained by a health problem.

So the important question is what makes anyone's heart rate go below 60/min? We were told what caused it in the President's case. The reporter implies we weren't told the whole truth.

My husband often has a heart rate under 60/min when resting. Can't call him well-conditioned but he has always had this heart rate since I knew him as a teen-ager! His EKG, treadmill and other cardiac tests normal.

Sinus bradycardia can result from a true health problem such a certain type of heart attack that affects the blood supply to the sinus node.

My neighbor had this type while plowing his back yard garden! He regularly worked in his yard and had been a commercial landscaper for years, not overweight, not a type A personality, but did use lots of soy sauce being Japanese!)

The answer is to have a good cardiac exam to be certain what is causing the slow rate. That's what they did for the President!

You are right. When my grandson married a Canadian girl last August 2001, he was not regularly employed having just finishing some college courses. His dad (my son) had to submit proof of his financial ability to support her.

By the way, our govt is so dumb that when they approved her right to emigrate into this country, the govt did NOT provide her the legal right to work in this country!

She had to submit more fees (the real reason?) and basically the same paperwork to get a card permitting her to work. She found work immediately as she had her masters in Social Work and the county needed social workers desperately! Meanwhile her husband (my grandson) could not find work in his chosen work of computer networking (too much competition from workers here on H-1B visas)and took a job at a book store. He is going back to college to add some courses which he hopes will improve his job chances.
